# Image metadata viewer: see what a photo reveals

> Find out what a photo tells people before you send it. The file is read inside your browser and never uploaded.

This is an interactive tool. Open https://www.vaultforyou.app/tools/image-metadata-viewer in a browser to use it: the photo is processed on your device and never uploaded.

## Quick answer

Drop a photo into the viewer to list its GPS coordinates, capture date, camera, software and other embedded fields. It reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF and TIFF files entirely in your browser; the image is not uploaded anywhere.

- **Formats:** JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, TIFF.
- **Reads:** EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, JPEG comments, PNG text.
- **Privacy:** The file is processed locally by JavaScript on this page.
- **Next step:** Found a location? Remove it with the metadata remover.

## What the viewer shows

Location is the field that matters most. If the photo has GPS data, the tool prints the latitude and longitude, and the altitude and direction when they are stored. Anyone you send the original file to can read the same numbers.

It also lists the date and time the picture was taken, the camera or phone model, the software that last edited it, and any owner name, serial number, caption or keywords embedded in the file. Rows that identify a person or place are highlighted.

## Why your photos carry this data

Phones and cameras write metadata when they save a picture. Apple says that, with Location Services on for Camera, location is embedded in photos so you can find them by place. Editing apps, scanners and social apps can add their own fields.

Some apps remove metadata when you upload, and some do not. Do not assume: test the file you actually send. Our [guide to EXIF data on iPhone](/blog/exif-data-iphone) explains where each field comes from.

## What this tool cannot see

It reads the common metadata blocks listed above. It does not decode camera maker notes (it only tells you one exists), video files, RAW formats or metadata stored in unusual places. A clean result means none of the supported fields were found, not that the file is proven anonymous.

The picture itself can also give things away: a street sign, a face, a reflection. Metadata is only one part of what a photo reveals.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is my photo uploaded when I use this viewer?

No. The page reads the file with JavaScript in your browser and prints the result on the same page. You can check by turning off your connection after the page loads; the viewer still works. The only link that leaves the page is the optional map link, which opens a map site in a new tab and carries only coordinates.

### Which file types does the viewer support?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF and TIFF. It reads EXIF (including GPS), XMP, IPTC, JPEG comments and PNG text chunks. Video, RAW camera formats and PDFs are not supported.

### Why does my iPhone photo show no location?

Either Location Services was off for Camera when you took it, the photo was shared or saved with location removed, or an app stripped it. Screenshots and many photos received through messaging apps normally have no GPS data.

### Does a photo with no metadata mean it is anonymous?

No. It only means this tool found none of the fields it knows how to read. The image content can still reveal people and places, and the file may hold data in formats the tool does not decode.

Keep sensitive photos out of your camera roll. A vault stores photos outside the Photos app, so they do not appear in pickers, search or widgets.
