# What is End-to-end encryption?

## Quick answer

End-to-end encryption means data is encrypted on the sender's device and can only be decrypted on the intended device. The company that carries or stores it in between, such as a cloud or messaging service, does not hold the keys and cannot read it.

- **Keys:** Stay on the devices at each end.
- **Opposite:** Encryption in transit or at rest, where the provider holds keys.

Many services encrypt data in transit and on their servers but keep the keys themselves, which means they can read or hand over the data. End-to-end encryption removes that ability. The trade-off is recovery: if you lose the keys, the provider can't restore your data.
