# What is Advanced Data Protection?

Published 2026-10-31 - Updated 2026-10-31 - By VaultForYou Editorial Team - Checked against iOS 27 - Oct 31, 2026

## Quick answer

Advanced Data Protection is an optional iCloud setting that turns on end-to-end encryption for most iCloud data, including iCloud Photos, iCloud Backup and Notes, so only your trusted devices hold the keys. It needs a recovery contact or recovery key.

- **Turn on:** Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud -> Advanced Data Protection.
- **Needs:** A recovery contact or recovery key.
- **Not covered:** Shared Albums, iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Without it, Apple holds the keys to iCloud Photos and backups. With it on, Apple can't help you recover that data if you lose access, so set up recovery first. Shared Albums don't support Advanced Data Protection.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is iCloud end-to-end encrypted?

Only partly by default. Passwords, Health data and a few other categories are always end-to-end encrypted. iCloud Photos, backups and Notes are end-to-end encrypted only if you turn on Advanced Data Protection in your iCloud settings.
