# How to hide photos on iPhone, and who can still see them

> The Hidden album keeps photos out of your library, your albums and the Photos widget. It doesn't encrypt them, it opens with your passcode, and it syncs with iCloud Photos. Here's what it really does and when you need more.

## Quick answer

To hide a photo on iPhone, open Photos, touch and hold the photo, tap Hide, and confirm. It moves to the Hidden album under Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden, which unlocks with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Hidden photos aren't separately encrypted and still sync with iCloud Photos, so anyone who can unlock your iPhone can open them.

- **Where is it?:** Photos -> Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden. Tap View Album, then unlock.
- **Who can open it?:** Anyone who can unlock your iPhone: an enrolled face or finger, or your passcode.
- **Does it sync?:** Yes. With iCloud Photos on, it's hidden (and viewable) on every device on your Apple Account.
- **Need real privacy?:** Move the photos into an encrypted vault, delete the originals, then empty Recently Deleted.

Hiding a photo on iPhone takes two taps. Knowing what that actually protects matters more than most guides admit.

The Hidden album is a display setting. It takes a photo out of your library view and puts it behind the same Face ID, Touch ID or passcode that unlocks your phone. It doesn't encrypt the photo separately, doesn't take it out of iCloud Photos, and doesn't stop anyone who can unlock your iPhone. Here's how it works, who can still see your photos, and what to do when it isn't enough.

## How do you hide photos on iPhone?

Open Photos, touch and hold the photo or video, tap **Hide**, and confirm. The item disappears from your library and moves to the Hidden album.

To hide several at once:

1. Open the **Photos** app and go to your library or an album.
2. Tap **Select**, then tap each photo or video you want to hide.
3. Tap the **More** button, then tap **Hide**.

On a Mac, select the photos and choose **Image -> Hide Photo**, or press **Command-L**.

> **Note:** With iCloud Photos turned on, anything you hide on one device is hidden on all your devices. You can't hide it on just one.

## Where is the Hidden album on iPhone?

Hidden photos go to the **Hidden** album, under **Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden** in the Photos app. They don't move to a separate, encrypted part of your iPhone; they stay in the same photo library and are just shown in a different place.

Apple is explicit that hidden photos stay in your library. Only visibility changes: they no longer appear in your library view, your other albums or the Photos widget. On iPhone and iPad, the Hidden album (like Recently Deleted) is locked by default and opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. On older iOS versions, it sat under the Albums tab.

### How to find and unhide hidden photos

1. Open **Photos** and tap **Collections**.
2. Scroll down to **Utilities** and tap **Hidden**.
3. Tap **View Album** and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
4. Touch and hold the photo or video, then tap **Unhide**.

On a Mac, the Hidden album is hidden from view by default: in Photos, choose **View -> Show Hidden Photo Album**, then unlock it with Touch ID or your login password.

### Can't find the Hidden album?

- **Show Hidden Album is off.** Turn it on in **Settings -> Apps -> Photos**. When it's off, the album disappears from Photos, but nothing is deleted.
- **The photo was deleted, not hidden.** Check **Collections -> Utilities -> Recently Deleted**, where items stay for 30 days.
- **You're on a different Apple Account.** Hidden photos belong to the library of the account you're signed in to.

## Are hidden photos really hidden?

Hidden photos are hidden from casual view, not from people with access. Anyone who can unlock your iPhone can open the Hidden album, and with iCloud Photos on, the same photos exist on your other devices and in iCloud.

Think of it as turning a framed photo to face the wall. Nobody glancing at the shelf sees it, which is genuinely useful. But hiding adds no encryption of its own and no new password: the lock on the Hidden album is your iPhone's lock. If you want photos behind a real lock rather than a curtain, see [how to lock photos on iPhone](/en-gb/blog/lock-photos-on-iphone), from locking the whole Photos app with Face ID to a vault with its own code.

## Who can see your hidden photos?

Here's the honest version, based on how Apple documents the feature:

| Who | Can they see hidden photos? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Someone scrolling your library, albums or widget | **No** | Hidden items are removed from the library view, other albums and the Photos widget. |
| Someone who knows your iPhone passcode | **Yes** | The passcode unlocks the Hidden album. |
| Someone whose face or fingerprint is enrolled on your iPhone | **Yes** | Face ID or Touch ID unlocks the Hidden album. |
| Anyone holding your phone, if you turned off the Photos lock | **Yes** | Turning off **Use Face ID / Use Touch ID / Use Passcode** in Settings -> Apps -> Photos removes the check. |
| Anyone who can unlock your iPad or Mac on the same Apple Account | **Yes** (with iCloud Photos on) | Hidden photos sync and stay hidden, and viewable, on every device. |
| Anyone signed in to your Apple Account at iCloud.com | **Yes** (with iCloud Photos on) | iCloud.com has a Hidden album in the Photos sidebar. |
| Members of your iCloud Shared Photo Library | **Yes, for shared photos** | Hiding a shared-library photo moves it to the Hidden album for all participants, who can view or unhide it. |
| Someone with your unlocked iPhone and a computer it trusts | **Don't count on hiding** | Hidden is a label inside the Photos library, not encryption, so it isn't designed to stop file-level access. |
| Apps you've given access to your whole photo library | **Possibly** | Review which apps have Photos access in Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Photos. |
| Apple | **Depends on your iCloud setting** | With standard data protection, Apple holds the keys to iCloud Photos. Advanced Data Protection end-to-end encrypts photo content. |

The Hidden album stops glances. It doesn't stop anyone who shares your passcode, your devices or your Apple Account.

## Do hidden photos sync to iCloud?

Yes. If iCloud Photos is on, hidden photos upload and sync like every other photo, and the hidden status syncs with them. They're hidden on your iPad and Mac, and they're in the Hidden album on iCloud.com.

How private that copy is depends on your iCloud protection level:

- **Standard data protection (the default).** Your iCloud data is encrypted in transit and at rest, but the encryption keys are kept in Apple's data centres so Apple can decrypt data on your behalf, for example when you sign in to a new device.
- **Advanced Data Protection (opt-in).** Photos become end-to-end encrypted, so only your trusted devices hold the keys, and iCloud.com web access is turned off. Turn it on in **Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud -> Advanced Data Protection**; you'll need a recovery contact or recovery key.

One detail most guides miss: even with Advanced Data Protection, Apple keeps some Photos metadata under standard protection, including **whether an item is marked as hidden**, when it was created and how many times it was viewed. The photo is protected; the fact that you hid it isn't end-to-end encrypted.

If you'd rather those photos never reach iCloud Photos at all, see [how to stop iCloud Photos syncing](/en-gb/blog/stop-icloud-photos-syncing), or move them out of the library as shown below.

## Are hidden photos included in backups?

It depends on whether iCloud Photos is on. When it's on, your photos sync to iCloud instead of going into your iCloud Backup. When it's off, Apple says iCloud Backup may include the photos and videos in your library, which includes hidden ones, because hiding doesn't remove anything from the library.

Computer backups made with the Finder, the Apple Devices app or iTunes **aren't encrypted by default**. If you back up to a Mac or PC, turn on **Encrypt local backup**.

## When is the Hidden album enough?

It's enough when you want photos out of sight, not out of reach, and the person you're hiding from doesn't know your passcode or use your Apple Account. For example:

- Keeping a surprise gift photo out of your camera roll.
- Keeping a work screenshot from popping up while you show someone your holiday pictures.
- Handing your phone to a child without worrying about what they'll scroll past.

## When isn't the Hidden album enough?

It isn't enough when someone else can unlock your phone or use your Apple Account, or when the photos shouldn't be in iCloud at all:

- **Someone knows your passcode.** They can open the Hidden album in seconds.
- **Your Apple Account is shared.** A family iPad or Mac signed in to the same account has the same Hidden album.
- **You use a Shared Library.** Hiding a shared photo hides it for everyone, and every participant can still open it.
- **You don't want it in iCloud Photos.** Hiding doesn't stop syncing.
- **The photo is sensitive in itself.** ID scans and intimate photos deserve their own lock, not a label (see [where to store passport and ID scans](/en-gb/blog/store-passport-id-scans-iphone)).

If any of these apply, the photos need to leave the Photos library and sit behind a lock that isn't your iPhone passcode. Our comparison of [the best photo vault apps for iPhone](/en-gb/blog/best-photo-vault-apps-iphone) covers the options.

## How to move hidden photos into a vault

The safe way to "hide" a photo for real is to move it into an encrypted vault, then delete the original from Photos and empty Recently Deleted. Skip the last two steps and the original is still in your library and in iCloud Photos.

We make VaultForYou, so here's how it works with our app. VaultForYou keeps the photos, videos and documents you choose outside the Photos library, so they don't show up in Photos, search or widgets. Files are encrypted on your iPhone, the keys stay in the iOS Keychain, and a vault opens only with a pattern you draw, separate from your iPhone passcode. We never see your pattern and can't see your files.

1. **Decide what leaves the Photos library** Open Photos -> Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden, tap View Album and unlock. Note which photos and videos shouldn't live in Photos or iCloud Photos at all.
2. **Install VaultForYou and draw your pattern** Install VaultForYou on your iPhone (iOS 16 or later); no account is needed. Connect 4 or more dots to draw a pattern, then draw it again to confirm.
3. **Move the photos into the vault** Open the vault and add photos, selecting many items at once. If a hidden photo doesn't appear, unhide it in Photos briefly, add it, and carry on.
4. **Check the import** VaultForYou shows how many items were saved and any duplicates. Open a few inside the vault before you delete anything.
5. **Delete the originals from Photos** Moving a photo into a vault creates a copy. In Photos, select the same items and delete them. With iCloud Photos on, they're deleted on your other devices too.
6. **Empty Recently Deleted** Open Collections -> Utilities -> Recently Deleted, tap View Album and unlock. Tap Select, choose the items, then choose Delete. Otherwise they stay there for 30 days.

Before you rely on it:

- **Your pattern is the only key.** Forget it and that vault can't be opened, by you or by us. Export anything you can't afford to lose and keep a copy somewhere safe.
- **Backup is your choice.** The optional encrypted iCloud backup (Premium) encrypts each file before it goes to your iCloud. With backup off, files can't be restored if you lose your phone.
- **Nothing gives it away.** The lock screen shows no vault names, counts or previews, and you can set a duress pattern that opens an ordinary-looking [decoy vault](/en-gb/blog/decoy-vault-iphone).

> **Hide photos behind a pattern only you know.** Encrypted on your iPhone, outside the Photos library. No account needed. [Download on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/vaultforyou/id0000000000)

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do hidden photos go on iPhone?

They go to the Hidden album in the Photos app: tap Collections, scroll to Utilities, and tap Hidden. Tap View Album and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. The photos stay in your photo library; they simply stop appearing in your library view, your other albums and the Photos widget.

### Are hidden photos really hidden?

They're hidden from view, not from people. Hiding doesn't encrypt or move the file anywhere private; it changes where Photos displays it. Anyone who can unlock your iPhone can open the Hidden album, and with iCloud Photos on, the same photos are on your other devices and in iCloud.

### Can someone see my hidden photos without my passcode?

On your iPhone, the Hidden album is locked by default and asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, so a person whose face or finger isn't enrolled can't open it. But if you turned off Use Face ID or Use Passcode in Settings -> Apps -> Photos, it opens without any check. Other devices and iCloud.com have their own sign-ins.

### Do hidden photos sync to iCloud and my other devices?

Yes. With iCloud Photos on, a photo you hide on one device is hidden on your other devices too, and it's still stored in iCloud. With standard data protection, Apple holds the keys to your iCloud Photos. Advanced Data Protection makes photo content end-to-end encrypted, though some metadata, including the hidden flag, isn't.

### Why can't I find the Hidden album on my iPhone?

The most common cause is that Show Hidden Album is turned off. Go to Settings -> Apps -> Photos and turn it back on; the album then reappears under Collections -> Utilities. If a photo still isn't there, check Recently Deleted, and make sure you're signed in to the Apple Account that holds your library.

### What's the most private way to hide photos on iPhone?

Take them out of the Photos library entirely. Move them into an encrypted vault app that has its own lock separate from your iPhone passcode, then delete the originals from Photos and empty Recently Deleted. That way the photos no longer appear in Photos, the Hidden album or iCloud Photos.

## Bottom line

The Hidden album is a good curtain and a poor lock. Use it to keep photos out of your library view, not for anything that would hurt if someone with your passcode, your iPad or your Apple Account saw it: hiding doesn't encrypt the photo separately and doesn't stop iCloud Photos syncing it.

For photos that must stay private, move them into an encrypted vault with its own lock, delete the originals, and empty Recently Deleted.
