## Safari privacy settings

### Require Face ID to Unlock Private Browsing

Go to **Settings -> Apps -> Safari -> Require Face ID to Unlock Private Browsing (or Require Passcode / Require Touch ID to Unlock Private Browsing)**. If you have a passcode set, Private Browsing locks when it's not in use (it may not lock immediately). Private tabs don't appear in History or in the tab list on your other devices.

### Use Private Browsing

Go to **Safari -> Tabs button -> swipe right on the tab bar until Private Browsing opens -> Unlock**. Private tabs don't appear in History on iPhone or in the list of tabs on your other devices, and aren't shared with your other Apple devices.

### Clear browsing history

Go to **Safari -> Show Bookmarks button -> History button -> More button -> Clear History -> choose a timeframe (and profile) -> Clear History**. Removes the history of websites you visited and recent searches from your iPhone, plus cookies and website permissions. The Personal Safety guide also gives Settings -> Apps -> Safari -> Clear History and Website Data.

### Exclude Safari from Siri, Search, and suggestions

Go to **Settings -> Siri -> Excluded Apps -> Add Apps**. Excluded apps aren't available to Siri, Search, or suggestions.

### Notification previews

Go to **Settings -> Notifications -> Safari (below Notification Style) -> Show Previews**. Clearing history also removes the permissions you gave websites to send you notifications. A locked app's content doesn't appear in notification previews.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you lock Safari on iPhone?

Yes. Touch and hold Safari, tap Require Face ID and confirm. It then needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open. Safari also has its own lock, Require Face ID to Unlock Private Browsing.

### Can you hide Safari on iPhone?

Not in the Hidden folder, because Safari comes with iPhone. You can remove it from the Home Screen so it only appears in App Library and search.

### Does Safari have its own passcode?

Safari has Require Face ID to Unlock Private Browsing. If you have a passcode set, Private Browsing locks when it's not in use (it may not lock immediately). Private tabs don't appear in History or in the tab list on your other devices. It uses your iPhone's Face ID or passcode rather than a separate code.

### Do Safari settings sync to my iPad?

The iOS lock and hidden status don't sync with iCloud; set them on each device. Safari has an iPad app, so repeat the steps there.
