## Quick answer

Google Chrome syncs bookmarks through your Google Account: Settings -> You and Google -> Sync and Google services -> Manage what you sync. Turn it on with the same account on each device and bookmarks appear everywhere within minutes.

- **Service:** Your Google Account
- **Setting:** Settings -> You and Google -> Sync and Google services -> Manage what you sync
- **What syncs:** Bookmarks, with folders and order; deletions too

## Sync bookmarks in Google Chrome

1. **Sign in** In Chrome, sign in with your Google Account.
2. **Turn on bookmark sync** Settings -> You and Google -> Sync and Google services -> Manage what you sync. Bookmarks is one of the data types; the others (history, passwords, open tabs) are separate switches.
3. **Repeat on each device** Sign in with the same account and turn bookmarks sync on.
4. **Check** Open `chrome://bookmarks` on the other device. New bookmarks usually arrive within a minute; a large first sync can take longer.

Menu labels change between versions of Chrome; the shortcut and the internal address `chrome://bookmarks` don't.

## What sync does

Every add, edit, move and deletion is copied to every device signed in with your Google Account. There is no per-folder choice: the whole list syncs or none of it. The copy in the account is the current list, not a history of versions.

## Stop syncing bookmarks

Settings -> You and Google -> Sync and Google services -> Manage what you sync, and turn the bookmarks switch off. bookmarks already on each device stay there; new changes stay local. Signing out does the same for everything at once.

## Keep some bookmarks out of Google Chrome altogether

Synced means every signed-in device shows the bookmark: a work laptop, a family computer, a phone someone else picks up. [Private Bookmarks](/private-bookmarks) is our free extension that saves pages into an encrypted vault on this computer: AES-256-GCM, a key derived from your password, no account, no sync and no network access. Saved pages never appear in the bookmarks bar, in `chrome://bookmarks` or in your Google Account, and the vault locks itself after a few minutes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why aren't my bookmarks syncing?

Check that the same account is signed in on both devices, that the bookmarks switch is on in Settings -> You and Google -> Sync and Google services -> Manage what you sync, and that neither device is paused (a yellow or red icon on the profile picture). A changed password can pause sync until you sign in again.

### Can I sync bookmarks with a different browser?

Not with your Google Account. Between browsers, export an HTML file and import it, or use a third-party sync extension.

### Does deleting on one device delete everywhere?

Yes. That is sync working as designed; turn it off first if you want to clear one device only.

### Do private bookmarks sync?

No. Private Bookmarks never syncs and has no network access. Move its vault between computers with its encrypted backup file.
