# Password-protect bookmarks: 6 browser guides

> No browser locks bookmarks on its own. Here is what each one offers and how Private Bookmarks adds the lock.

## Quick answer

Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi have no password for bookmarks: anyone using the profile can open the manager and read them. A separate profile only hides them from view. To lock bookmarks you need an extension; Private Bookmarks by VaultForYou encrypts them with AES-256-GCM on this computer and opens only with your password.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Chrome have a bookmarks password?

No, and neither do Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi. The closest built-in options are a separate profile or an operating-system user account. Private Bookmarks is a free extension that adds a password-locked, encrypted vault for the pages you want private.

### Do the steps differ between Windows and Mac?

Only the modifier key: Ctrl on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS becomes ⌘ on a Mac. Menu paths and internal URLs are the same.

### Why do Edge pages say favorites?

Microsoft Edge calls bookmarks favorites and the bar the favorites bar. Everything else, down to the Bookmarks file in the profile folder, works the same way as in Chrome.
