## Quick answer

In Opera, go to opera://bookmarks -> Import/Export -> Import bookmarks, or Opera menu -> Bookmarks -> Import bookmarks and settings. Imported bookmarks land in their own folder, so nothing you already have is overwritten.

- **From a file:** opera://bookmarks -> Import/Export -> Import bookmarks, or Opera menu -> Bookmarks -> Import bookmarks and settings
- **Lands in:** A new folder named Imported (or after the browser), under Other bookmarks

## Import bookmarks into Opera

1. **Have the file ready** Export from the old browser first (its bookmark manager has an Export option). The result is one .html file.
2. **Open the import** opera://bookmarks -> Import/Export -> Import bookmarks, or Opera menu -> Bookmarks -> Import bookmarks and settings.
3. **Pick the file** Choose the .html file. Opera reads it and makes a folder for it.
4. **Merge** Open `opera://bookmarks`, drag what you want from the imported folder into your own folders, and delete the rest.

Menu labels change between versions of Opera; the shortcut and the internal address `opera://bookmarks` don't.

## From another browser

Export an HTML file from the other browser's bookmark manager, then import it here. Only bookmarks come across.

## Importing twice

Each import makes a new folder, so importing the same file twice gives you duplicates. Delete the earlier folder first, or import once and then sort.

## Keep some bookmarks out of Opera altogether

Imported bookmarks inherit the same visibility as the rest: anyone using Opera here can read them. [Private Bookmarks](/private-bookmarks) is our free extension that saves pages into an encrypted vault on this computer: AES-256-GCM, a key derived from your password, no account, no sync and no network access. Saved pages never appear in the bookmarks bar, in `opera://bookmarks` or in an Opera account, and the vault locks itself after a few minutes. Opera installs Chrome Web Store extensions once the free "Install Chrome Extensions" add-on from Opera's own add-ons site is in place. After that, Add to Chrome becomes Add to Opera.

## Frequently asked questions

### Will importing delete my existing bookmarks?

No. Opera adds the file's contents in a new folder and leaves everything else alone.

### Which file types can Opera import?

The bookmark HTML format that every browser exports. Opera can't read another browser's raw Bookmarks or places.sqlite file directly; export to HTML from that browser first.

### Why are imported bookmarks not on the bookmarks bar?

They sit in the imported folder under Other bookmarks. Drag them, or the whole folder, into the Bookmarks bar folder.

### Can I import into Private Bookmarks?

Private Bookmarks imports its own encrypted .pvb backups, not browser HTML files; move pages into the vault by saving them from the toolbar icon.
