# How to export bookmarks in Opera

> One HTML file, every browser can read it, and it is the simplest backup you can make.

## Quick answer

In Opera, go to opera://bookmarks -> Import/Export (bottom left) -> Export bookmarks. Opera writes one HTML file with every bookmark and folder, which any browser can import.

- **Path:** opera://bookmarks -> Import/Export (bottom left) -> Export bookmarks
- **Format:** Netscape bookmark HTML, the format every browser imports
- **Contains:** Every bookmark, folder and favicon; not history, passwords or private bookmarks

## Export bookmarks from Opera

1. **Open the manager** Go to `opera://bookmarks`, or press Ctrl+Shift+B opens the Bookmarks page in Opera (it doesn't toggle the bar).
2. **Export** opera://bookmarks -> Import/Export (bottom left) -> Export bookmarks.
3. **Save the file** Pick a folder and keep the .html name. The file is plain text; open it in a browser to check it.
4. **Store it somewhere else** A backup on the same disk isn't one. Copy it to a drive or a cloud folder you control.

Menu labels change between versions of Opera; the shortcut and the internal address `opera://bookmarks` don't.

## What is in the file

The HTML file lists every bookmark with its name, address, folder and the date it was added, plus a small copy of each site icon. It does not contain history, passwords, open tabs or settings. It is readable by anyone who opens it, so treat it like the bookmarks themselves.

## Export vs copying the Bookmarks file

Opera also keeps the live list in `%APPDATA%\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Default\Bookmarks (older installs: without the Default folder)` (Windows) or `~/Library/Application Support/com.operasoftware.Opera/Default/Bookmarks` (Mac). Copying that file is a faster backup for the same browser, but only an HTML export imports into a different browser.

## Keep some bookmarks out of Opera altogether

An export copies everything, including the bookmarks you would rather not have in a file on a shared drive. [Private Bookmarks](/private-bookmarks) is our free extension that saves pages into an encrypted vault on this computer: AES-256-GCM, a key derived from your password, no account, no sync and no network access. Saved pages never appear in the bookmarks bar, in `opera://bookmarks` or in an Opera account, and the vault locks itself after a few minutes. Opera installs Chrome Web Store extensions once the free "Install Chrome Extensions" add-on from Opera's own add-ons site is in place. After that, Add to Chrome becomes Add to Opera.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where does Opera save the exported file?

Wherever you choose in the save dialog; by default the Downloads folder. The file is named with the date.

### Can I open the export in another browser?

Yes. Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Firefox and Safari all import this HTML format.

### Does the export include bookmarks from my other devices?

Only if sync has already copied them into this Opera. Check `opera://bookmarks` first.

### Are private bookmarks in the export?

No. Private Bookmarks keeps its vault separate and makes its own encrypted .pvb backup from its Settings; the browser's export never sees it.
