# How to export favorites in Microsoft Edge

> One HTML file, every browser can read it, and it is the simplest backup you can make.

## Quick answer

In Microsoft Edge, go to Favorites panel (Ctrl+Shift+O) -> ... -> Export favorites. Edge writes one HTML file with every favorite and folder, which any browser can import.

- **Path:** Favorites panel (Ctrl+Shift+O) -> ... -> Export favorites
- **Format:** Netscape bookmark HTML, the format every browser imports
- **Contains:** Every favorite, folder and favicon; not history, passwords or private bookmarks

## Export favorites from Microsoft Edge

1. **Open the manager** Go to `edge://favorites`, or press Ctrl+Shift+O (opens the Favorites panel).
2. **Export** Favorites panel (Ctrl+Shift+O) -> ... -> Export favorites.
3. **Save the file** Pick a folder and keep the .html name. The file is plain text; open it in a browser to check it.
4. **Store it somewhere else** A backup on the same disk isn't one. Copy it to a drive or a cloud folder you control.

Menu labels change between versions of Edge; the shortcut and the internal address `edge://favorites` don't.

## What is in the file

The HTML file lists every favorite with its name, address, folder and the date it was added, plus a small copy of each site icon. It does not contain history, passwords, open tabs or settings. It is readable by anyone who opens it, so treat it like the favorites themselves.

## Export vs copying the Bookmarks file

Edge also keeps the live list in `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Bookmarks` (Windows) or `~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge/Default/Bookmarks` (Mac). Copying that file is a faster backup for the same browser, but only an HTML export imports into a different browser.

## Keep some bookmarks out of Microsoft Edge altogether

An export copies everything, including the favorites you would rather not have in a file on a shared drive. [Private Bookmarks](/private-bookmarks) is our free extension that saves pages into an encrypted vault on this computer: AES-256-GCM, a key derived from your password, no account, no sync and no network access. Saved pages never appear in the favorites bar, in `edge://favorites` or in your Microsoft account, and the vault locks itself after a few minutes. Edge installs Chrome Web Store extensions. The first time, Edge asks you to allow extensions from other stores; click Allow, then Add to Chrome works as Get.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where does Edge save the exported file?

Wherever you choose in the save dialog; by default the Downloads folder. The file is named with the date.

### Can I open the export in another browser?

Yes. Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Firefox and Safari all import this HTML format.

### Does the export include favorites from my other devices?

Only if sync has already copied them into this Edge. Check `edge://favorites` first.

### Are private bookmarks in the export?

No. Private Bookmarks keeps its vault separate and makes its own encrypted .pvb backup from its Settings; the browser's export never sees it.
