## Quick answer

In Chrome on a Chromebook, go to Bookmark Manager -> ⋮ (top right of the manager) -> Export bookmarks; the HTML file lands in your Downloads or Files app. Chromebook writes one HTML file with every bookmark and folder, which any browser can import.

- **Path:** Bookmark Manager -> ⋮ (top right of the manager) -> Export bookmarks; the HTML file lands in your Downloads or Files app
- **Format:** Netscape bookmark HTML, the format every browser imports
- **Contains:** Every bookmark, folder and favicon; not history, passwords or private bookmarks

## Export bookmarks from Chrome on a Chromebook

1. **Open the manager** Go to `chrome://bookmarks`, or press Ctrl+Shift+O.
2. **Export** Bookmark Manager -> ⋮ (top right of the manager) -> Export bookmarks; the HTML file lands in your Downloads or Files app.
3. **Save the file** Pick a folder and keep the .html name. The file is plain text; open it in a browser to check it.
4. **Store it somewhere else** A backup on the same disk isn't one. Copy it to a drive or a cloud folder you control.

Menu labels change between versions of Chromebook; the shortcut and the internal address `chrome://bookmarks` don't.

## What is in the file

The HTML file lists every bookmark with its name, address, folder and the date it was added, plus a small copy of each site icon. It does not contain history, passwords, open tabs or settings. It is readable by anyone who opens it, so treat it like the bookmarks themselves.

## Export vs copying the Bookmarks file

ChromeOS keeps the Chrome profile in a part of the storage you can't open from the Files app, so there is no Bookmarks file to copy. Export to HTML or rely on sync instead. The HTML export is the only copy you can make.

## Keep some bookmarks out of Chrome on a Chromebook altogether

An export copies everything, including the bookmarks you would rather not have in a file on a shared drive. [Private Bookmarks](/private-bookmarks) is our free extension that saves pages into an encrypted vault on this computer: AES-256-GCM, a key derived from your password, no account, no sync and no network access. Saved pages never appear in the bookmarks bar, in `chrome://bookmarks` or in your Google Account, and the vault locks itself after a few minutes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where does Chromebook save the exported file?

Wherever you choose in the save dialog; by default the Downloads folder. The file is named with the date.

### Can I open the export in another browser?

Yes. Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Firefox and Safari all import this HTML format.

### Does the export include bookmarks from my other devices?

Only if sync has already copied them into this Chromebook. Check `chrome://bookmarks` first.

### Are private bookmarks in the export?

No. Private Bookmarks keeps its vault separate and makes its own encrypted .pvb backup from its Settings; the browser's export never sees it.
