## Quick answer

Press Ctrl+D on the page you want to keep, or click the star at the right end of the address bar, then choose a folder and Done. The bookmark goes to the folder you pick; the bookmarks bar folder puts it on the bar.

- **Shortcut:** Ctrl+D
- **Button:** click the star at the right end of the address bar, then choose a folder and Done
- **Default folder:** The last folder you used; the bookmarks bar shows the Bookmarks bar folder

## Bookmark a page in Chrome on a Chromebook

1. **Open the page** In Chrome on a Chromebook, open the page you want to keep.
2. **Press Ctrl+D** Or click the star at the right end of the address bar, then choose a folder and Done.
3. **Name it and pick a folder** Change the name if the page title is long and choose a folder. Done saves it.
4. **Find it again** From the bookmarks bar, the star menu, or `chrome://bookmarks`. Typing in the address bar also suggests bookmarks.

Menu labels change between versions of Chromebook; the shortcut and the internal address `chrome://bookmarks` don't.

## Bookmark all open tabs

Right-click any tab (or press Ctrl+Shift+D, ⌘+Shift+D on a Mac) and choose the option to bookmark all tabs. Chromebook makes a folder with one bookmark per tab, handy before closing a research session.

## Where new bookmarks go

Chromebook remembers the last folder you used. The Bookmarks bar folder shows on the bar; Other bookmarks and your own folders show in the manager and the star menu. Drag between folders in `chrome://bookmarks` to tidy up later.

## Keep some bookmarks out of Chrome on a Chromebook altogether

Every bookmark you add this way is readable by anyone who opens Chromebook on this computer, and copied to every device that syncs with your Google Account. [Private Bookmarks](/private-bookmarks) is our free extension that saves pages into an encrypted vault on this computer: AES-256-GCM, a key derived from your password, no account, no sync and no network access. Saved pages never appear in the bookmarks bar, in `chrome://bookmarks` or in your Google Account, and the vault locks itself after a few minutes.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the keyboard shortcut to bookmark a page in Chromebook?

Ctrl+D. It opens a small window to name the bookmark and choose a folder.

### Can I bookmark every open tab at once?

Yes. Right-click a tab, or press Ctrl+Shift+D (⌘+Shift+D on a Mac), and Chromebook saves every tab into a new folder.

### Where did my bookmark go?

Into the folder shown when you saved it. Open `chrome://bookmarks` and search by name if you don't see it on the bar.

### Is a bookmark private?

No. It is stored in plain text in the profile and shown to anyone using Chromebook on this computer; with sync on it is copied to your other devices. For pages you want kept private, an encrypted vault such as Private Bookmarks is the only locked option.
