# Does WhatsApp remove EXIF metadata and location from photos?

> Messaging apps process images differently, and they change with updates. The reliable answer is the one you measure yourself.

## Quick answer

We haven't tested WhatsApp, and you shouldn't rely on any app to remove location. Sending a photo as a compressed image and sending it as a document can behave differently. Send yourself a test photo each way and open what arrived in a metadata viewer to see.

- **Our status:** Not tested by us. No claim about WhatsApp's behavior.
- **Why it varies:** App version, how you send, and the photo's format all matter.
- **Reliable method:** Send a test photo, then inspect what arrived.
- **Safest habit:** Send a clean copy, not the original.

This is a guide to testing WhatsApp, not a report of tests. We did not send photos through WhatsApp for this page, so we won't tell you what it keeps or removes. Apps change, and a page that claimed an answer today could be wrong after the next update.

## Why the answer isn't simple

Three things change what the other person receives:

- **How you send it.** A normal photo is typically processed by the app, while a document is meant to deliver the original file.
- **The photo's format.** HEIC and JPEG store metadata differently; see [does HEIC contain location metadata?](/blog/heic-location-metadata).
- **The app version.** Behavior can change without notice.

Our guide on [removing location from photos](/blog/remove-location-from-photos-iphone) makes the same point: don't rely on a messaging app to clean a photo.

## A two-minute test you can run

1. Pick a photo with location. Open it in the [image metadata viewer](/tools/image-metadata-viewer) to confirm GPS is present.
2. Send it to yourself, or to a friend who will send the files back, **as a photo**, then again **as a document**.
3. Save both received files and transfer them to a computer unchanged.
4. Open each in the viewer. Note GPS, date and camera fields, file format and size.

Write down your phone, the app version and the date. That's an original experiment, and it will be more accurate for you than any article.

## Send a clean copy instead

If the photo shouldn't reveal where you were, remove the location before it leaves your hands:

- On iPhone: Share -> Options -> turn off **Location**, or More -> Adjust Info -> Adjust Location -> No Location.
- On a computer: use the [metadata remover](/tools/remove-photo-metadata) and send the copy it verified.
- For photos you may want to take back, a link you can revoke beats an attachment.

> **Share private photos with a link you control.** Encrypted, no account for the recipient, revocable any time. [Download on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/vaultforyou/id0000000000)

## Frequently asked questions

### Does WhatsApp remove location from photos?

We haven't tested it and won't guess. Messaging apps may remove some metadata when they compress an image, and may keep it when you send a file as a document. Behavior can change in updates, so test with your own photo.

### Is sending as a document different from sending as a photo?

Often it is, because a document is generally meant to be delivered as the original file. That can include its metadata. Test both ways with the same photo and compare the received files.

### How do I test what WhatsApp sends?

Send a geotagged photo to yourself or a friend as a photo and again as a document, save both received files, and open each in the free image metadata viewer. If either shows GPS, WhatsApp delivered it.

### What is the safest way to send a photo without location?

Remove it first. On iPhone, turn off Location in Share -> Options or use Adjust Location -> No Location. On a computer, use the free metadata remover, which re-checks the clean copy, then send that.

## Bottom line

Whether WhatsApp strips metadata depends on how and when you send, and we haven't measured it. Test your own photo in two minutes, or skip the question by sending a clean copy.
