# How to unhide apps on iPhone, whichever way they were hidden

> Most missing apps aren't deleted: they're in the Hidden folder, in App Library or behind a Screen Time setting, and each one has its own way back.

## Quick answer

To unhide an app on iPhone, swipe left past your last Home Screen page to App Library, tap the Hidden folder at the bottom and authenticate. Touch and hold the app, tap Don't Require Face ID, then authenticate again. The app reappears near the top of App Library, and you can drag it to your Home Screen.

- **Hidden folder:** Bottom of App Library. Open it, touch and hold the app, tap Don't Require Face ID.
- **Not in the folder?:** Search App Library. If the app is listed, it was only removed from the Home Screen.
- **Built-in app gone?:** Check Screen Time restrictions, or redownload it from the App Store by its exact name.
- **App Store list:** App Store -> your picture -> your name -> Hidden Purchases -> Unhide.

In App Library: swipe left past your last Home Screen page, scroll to the bottom, tap the **Hidden** folder and authenticate. Touch and hold the app, tap **Don't Require Face ID** (or Touch ID or Passcode), and authenticate again. The app leaves the Hidden folder and appears near the top of App Library, ready to drag back to your Home Screen. That covers apps hidden with Apple's Hidden folder, on iOS 18 and later. If the app isn't in that folder, it was hidden some other way, and each way has its own undo.

We checked these steps against Apple's iOS 27 documentation in October 2026. Below: how to tell which method hid your app, how to undo each one, and where to look when an app seems to have vanished.

## How to unhide an app on iPhone

The Hidden folder is the only place on iPhone where an app is both hidden and locked. Apple says hiding removes an app from the Home Screen, App Library and search results, and moves it to a folder that needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open. Unhiding reverses all three.

1. **Open App Library** Go to the Home Screen and swipe left past all your Home Screen pages until App Library appears.
2. **Open the Hidden folder** Scroll to the bottom of App Library, tap the Hidden folder, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
3. **Stop hiding the app** Touch and hold the app, tap Don't Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode), then authenticate again.
4. **Put it back on the Home Screen** The app appears near the top of App Library. Touch and hold it until it moves to the Home Screen, then lift your finger.

A few details trip people up:

- **The option is called Don't Require Face ID**, not "Unhide." Unhiding and unlocking are the same action, so the app also stops asking for Face ID when it opens.
- **You need your iPhone's own lock.** Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode all work. There's no separate code for the Hidden folder.
- **It may not land on your Home Screen.** Apple's iPhone User Guide says the app appears near the top of App Library; its Personal Safety guide says it also returns to the Home Screen. If you don't see it there, drag it from App Library.

To see every hidden app at once, go to **Settings -> Apps -> Hidden Apps** and authenticate. That list is handy if you hid several apps and can't remember which.

## Which method hid it?

Before you start tapping, work out how the app was hidden. The clue is where the app still shows up.

| What you notice | Probably hidden by | How to undo it |
|---|---|---|
| Not in App Library search, and there's a Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library | **Hide and Require Face ID** | Open the Hidden folder -> touch and hold -> Don't Require Face ID |
| Shows up in App Library search but not on any Home Screen page | **Remove from Home Screen** | Touch and hold it in App Library until it moves to the Home Screen |
| A whole page of apps is gone at once | **A hidden Home Screen page** | Touch and hold the wallpaper -> tap the dots -> add the checkmark back |
| It's on the Home Screen, just not where you remember | **A folder** | Open the folder and drag the app out |
| A built-in app like Camera is missing everywhere | **Screen Time restrictions** | Allow it again in Content & Privacy Restrictions |
| New downloads never reach the Home Screen | **App Library Only** | Settings -> Home Screen & App Library -> Add to Home Screen |
| The app opens fine but never appears in search | **Search or Siri settings** | Turn Show App in Search back on, or remove it from Excluded Apps |
| The app is gone from your App Store purchase list | **A hidden purchase** | App Store -> your name -> Hidden Purchases -> Unhide |
| The icon has a small cloud symbol | **Offloaded** | Tap the icon to reinstall |
| It isn't anywhere on the phone | **Deleted** | Redownload it from the App Store |

## How to unhide app on iPhone when it was only removed from the Home Screen

Most "hidden" apps were never hidden at all. When you tap **Remove App -> Remove from Home Screen**, Apple says the app moves to App Library and can still be used from there. Nothing is deleted.

1. Swipe left past all your Home Screen pages to App Library.
2. Tap the search field at the top and type the app's name, or scroll the alphabetical list.
3. Touch and hold the app until the icons begin to jiggle and the app moves to the Home Screen, then lift your finger.

If the search finds nothing, the app is either in the Hidden folder (hidden apps are removed from App Library search) or no longer installed.

### Show a hidden Home Screen page

Hiding a page is easy to do by accident, and it takes every app on that page with it. The apps stay in App Library, but they vanish from your swipe-through.

1. Touch and hold the Home Screen wallpaper until the icons jiggle.
2. Tap the dots at the bottom of the screen. Thumbnails of your pages appear with checkmarks below them.
3. Tap to add the checkmark under any page without one.
4. Tap **Done** (or press the Home button on iPhone SE).

Apple also notes that while pages are hidden, new apps you download may be added to App Library instead of the Home Screen. That explains a lot of "my new app never showed up" moments.

### Take an app out of a folder

A folder can hold several pages of apps, so an app can sit on the second page of a folder you haven't opened in months. Open the folder, swipe through its pages, then touch and hold the app until it jiggles and drag it onto the Home Screen. When a folder is empty, iOS deletes it automatically.

### Turn off App Library Only

If every new download goes straight to App Library, check the download setting. Go to **Settings -> Home Screen & App Library** and choose **Add to Home Screen**. This only affects apps you download from now on. Apps that already went to App Library stay there until you drag them out.

## How to unhide built-in apps blocked by Screen Time

Apps that come with iPhone, like Camera or Safari, can't go in the Hidden folder. When one of them disappears, Screen Time is the usual reason.

**On iOS 27:**

1. Go to **Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions**.
2. Tap **Other Features** and allow the app or feature you want back, such as Camera or AirDrop.
3. Enter the Screen Time passcode if you're asked.

**On iOS 26:** go to **Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions -> Allowed Apps & Features** and turn the app back on. Apple's iOS 26 guide says a built-in app you turn off there isn't deleted; it's temporarily hidden from your Home Screen until you turn it back on.

**On a child's iPhone:** a parent opens **Settings -> Family**, taps the child's name, then **Apps & Websites**, and checks the **Blocked** tab. Apple says blocked apps are hidden on the child's device until a parent allows them again.

If you don't know the Screen Time passcode on your own iPhone, you can't change these settings. Our guide to [locking apps on iPhone](/blog/lock-apps-iphone) explains how the Screen Time passcode works alongside app locks.

## How to unhide apps in search and Siri

Sometimes the icon is right there, but the app never appears when you swipe down and type. Two settings keep a visible app out of search:

- **Show App in Search.** Go to **Settings -> Search**, scroll down, tap the app and turn **Show App in Search** back on.
- **Excluded Apps.** Go to **Settings -> Siri -> Excluded Apps**. Apple says excluded apps aren't available to Siri, Search or suggestions. Tap **Edit**, delete the app from the list, then confirm your changes.

A hidden app is also removed from search results, so if neither setting explains it, check the Hidden folder.

## How to unhide apps in App Store purchase history

Hiding an app in the App Store is separate from everything above. It removes the app from your purchase list, and that's all. Apple says it doesn't remove the app from your devices.

1. Open the App Store and tap your photo or initials.
2. Tap your name and sign in if prompted.
3. Tap **Hidden Purchases**.
4. Find the app and tap **Unhide**.

If you deleted the app as well, redownload it from the App Store. Apple says you don't need to buy it again. In a Family Sharing group, unhiding also matters for your family: while a purchase is hidden, family members can't redownload it from your shared purchases.

## If the app was offloaded or deleted: reinstall it

An app that was removed from your iPhone isn't hidden, but it looks the same from the Home Screen.

**Offloaded apps** keep their spot. When storage is low and **Offload Unused Apps** is on (in **Settings -> Apps -> App Store**), iPhone removes apps you don't use but keeps their data. Apple says the icon stays on your Home Screen with a cloud symbol. Tap it to reinstall.

**Deleted apps** have to be downloaded again:

1. Open the App Store and tap your picture.
2. Tap **Apps & Purchase History**, then **Your Apps**. In a Family Sharing group, tap **My Apps**.
3. Find the app and tap the download button, if it's still available in the App Store.

**Deleted built-in apps** like Calculator, Contacts or Weather work the same way, with one tip from Apple: search the App Store for the app's exact name, then tap **Redownload**. Some Apple apps can be removed from the Home Screen but not deleted, so if a built-in app is missing, check App Library before you redownload it.

Deleting an app removes its data from your iPhone. Apple notes that data stored in iCloud, such as documents you saved through the app, isn't deleted with it.

## Can't find the app? Where to look

Work down this table from the top. Each row takes a few seconds and rules out one kind of hiding.

| Where to look | How to get there | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| App Library search | Swipe left to App Library -> tap the search field | Listed: it's installed and only off the Home Screen |
| The Hidden folder | Bottom of App Library -> authenticate | Inside: it was hidden with Require Face ID |
| Hidden Apps list | Settings -> Apps -> Hidden Apps | Every app currently in the Hidden folder |
| Hidden Home Screen pages | Touch and hold wallpaper -> tap the dots | Unchecked pages hold apps you can't swipe to |
| Folders | Open each folder and swipe through its pages | Apps tucked away on a folder's second page |
| Screen Time | Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions | Built-in apps blocked by a restriction |
| Search settings | Settings -> Search, and Settings -> Siri -> Excluded Apps | Why a visible app won't appear in search |
| App Store | Your picture -> Apps & Purchase History -> Your Apps | Whether you still own it and can redownload it |
| Hidden Purchases | App Store -> your name -> Hidden Purchases | Apps hidden from your purchase list |
| Another device | The same steps on your iPad | Hiding doesn't sync, so it may only be hidden there |

## Why can't I unhide an app?

Each method needs something different to undo. If you're stuck, it's usually because you're missing one of these.

| To undo... | You need | If you don't have it |
|---|---|---|
| Hide and Require Face ID | Face ID, Touch ID or the iPhone passcode | There's no way around it; the Hidden folder uses the phone's own lock |
| Remove from Home Screen | Nothing | Drag the app from App Library |
| A hidden Home Screen page | Nothing | Touch and hold the wallpaper and tap the dots |
| Screen Time restriction on your iPhone | The Screen Time passcode, if one is set | The setting stays locked until you have it |
| Blocked app on a child's iPhone | A parent or guardian in the family group | Ask them to allow it from their Family settings |
| Hidden App Store purchase | Your Apple Account sign-in | Sign in to the App Store first |
| Deleted app | The app still being available in the App Store | You can't redownload an app the App Store no longer offers |

A few other dead ends have simple explanations:

- **There's no Don't Require Face ID option.** The app isn't hidden or locked. Look for it in App Library search, folders and hidden pages instead.
- **The menu only says Require Face ID.** Same thing: the app is already unhidden and unlocked, so there's nothing to undo.
- **You can't find the app on your iPad.** Hidden status is per device. Unhide it there separately, or check whether it's installed on that iPad at all.
- **A built-in app won't come back.** If it isn't in App Library or Screen Time restrictions, it was probably deleted. Search the App Store for its exact name and tap **Redownload**.

## What unhiding doesn't change

Unhiding puts the icon back. It doesn't touch the rest of the app's footprint, because hiding never did.

- **The app's data is unchanged.** A hidden app stays installed with everything in it. Unhiding doesn't restore anything, because nothing was removed.
- **Other devices aren't affected.** Apple says hidden status doesn't sync with iCloud. Unhide on each device separately.
- **The lock goes too.** Don't Require Face ID both unhides and unlocks. If you want the app visible but still locked, touch and hold it afterward and tap **Require Face ID**, then choose the plain lock instead of Hide and Require Face ID.
- **Teens and parents.** Children under 13 in a Family Sharing group can't hide apps at all. Teens aged 13 to 17 can, but Apple says a parent can still see the app was downloaded and how much it's used. If you're the parent trying to see what's on a teen's phone, read [how to find hidden apps on iPhone](/blog/find-hidden-apps-iphone).

For the opposite job, putting an app out of sight properly, see our guide on [how to hide apps on iPhone](/blog/hide-apps-on-iphone) or the [hide apps overview](/hide-apps).

## Hidden apps hide icons, not photos

Here's the part people discover after unhiding an app to look for something. The Hidden folder hides an icon. It doesn't hide what the app saved elsewhere. Photos you saved from a hidden app are sitting in your Photos library, visible to anyone who opens Photos, and the folder itself opens with your iPhone passcode.

If the thing you actually want private is a set of photos, videos or documents, a vault does a different job. We make VaultForYou: it keeps the files you choose in a vault that opens only with a pattern you draw, not your iPhone passcode. Files are encrypted on your iPhone and live outside the Photos library, so they don't show up in Photos, search or widgets. No account is needed. For the built-in options, see [how to hide photos on iPhone](/blog/hide-photos-on-iphone).

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I unhide apps on my iPhone?

Swipe left past your last Home Screen page to App Library, tap the Hidden folder at the bottom and authenticate. Touch and hold the app, tap Don't Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode) and authenticate again. The app leaves the Hidden folder and appears near the top of App Library. If it isn't on your Home Screen, touch and hold it in App Library until it moves there.

### How do I unhide an app on iPhone without Face ID?

Use your passcode. Apple's Hidden folder accepts Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode, both to open the folder and to confirm Don't Require Face ID. On an iPhone with a Home button, the menu reads Don't Require Touch ID instead. You can't unhide an app without one of these, because hiding is tied to your iPhone's own lock.

### Where is the Hidden folder on iPhone?

At the very bottom of App Library. Swipe left past all your Home Screen pages to reach App Library, then scroll down past the categories. The folder opens only after Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. To see a list of hidden apps without scrolling, go to Settings -> Apps -> Hidden Apps, which also asks you to authenticate.

### How do I get an app back on my Home Screen?

Swipe left to App Library, tap the search field and type the app's name. If it appears, touch and hold it until it moves to the Home Screen, then lift your finger. If the search finds nothing, check the Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library. If it isn't there either, a Screen Time restriction may be blocking it, or it was deleted.

### How do I unhide apps in the App Store?

Open the App Store, tap your photo or initials, then tap your name and sign in if asked. Tap Hidden Purchases, find the app and tap Unhide. This only restores the app to your purchase list. If you also deleted the app, redownload it from the App Store; Apple says you don't need to buy it again.

### Why doesn't an app show up when I search on my iPhone?

Three settings can keep an app out of search. A hidden app is removed from search results until you unhide it. Settings -> Search lets you turn off Show App in Search for any app. And apps added to Settings -> Siri -> Excluded Apps aren't available to Siri, Search or suggestions. Check all three, in that order.

### How do I unhide apps blocked by Screen Time?

On iOS 27, go to Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions -> Other Features and allow the app or feature again. On iOS 26, the switches were under Allowed Apps & Features. You'll need the Screen Time passcode if one is set. On a child's iPhone, a parent goes to Settings -> Family, taps the child's name, then Apps & Websites, and allows the app from the Blocked tab.

### Does unhiding an app on my iPhone unhide it on my iPad?

No. Apple says the locked or hidden status of an app doesn't sync with iCloud, so hiding and unhiding apply only to the device where you do them. If you hid the same app on your iPad, open the Hidden folder in App Library on the iPad and tap Don't Require Face ID there too.

## Bottom line

To unhide an app on iPhone, open the **Hidden** folder at the bottom of App Library, touch and hold the app and tap **Don't Require Face ID**. Then drag it from App Library to your Home Screen.

If it isn't in the Hidden folder, it was hidden another way. Search App Library first: if the app is there, it was only removed from the Home Screen. If not, check hidden pages, folders, Screen Time restrictions and your App Store purchases, in that order. An app that's truly gone can be redownloaded for free.
