# How to turn off shared photos on iPhone

> Shared photos reach your library three different ways, and each one has its own off switch; none of them deletes what you've already saved.

Published 2026-10-29 - Updated 2026-10-29 - By VaultForYou Editorial Team

## Quick answer

To turn off shared photos from Messages, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Shared with You and turn off Photos. For an iCloud Shared Photo Library, switch your library view to Personal Library, or leave it in Settings > Apps > Photos > Shared Library. For shared albums, unsubscribe or turn off Shared Albums in your iCloud Photos settings.

- **From Messages:** Settings > Apps > Messages > Shared with You > turn off Photos.
- **From a Shared Library:** Library view > Personal Library, or Settings > Apps > Photos > Shared Library > Leave Shared Library.
- **From shared albums:** Unsubscribe from the album, or turn off Shared Albums under Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos.
- **What it won't do:** It doesn't delete photos you saved, and it doesn't take back copies other people already have.

It depends which shared photos you're seeing. Photos people send you in Messages appear through **Shared with You**: turn off Photos in **Settings > Apps > Messages > Shared with You**. Photos from an **iCloud Shared Photo Library** mix into your library: switch to **Personal Library** view, or leave the library. **Shared albums** live in their own collection: unsubscribe, or turn off Shared Albums. Each switch stops photos from showing up. None of them deletes a photo you already saved, and none takes back copies other people already have.

We checked these steps against Apple's iOS 27 documentation in October 2026. Menus moved between iOS versions, so where they differ, we say so.

## Where are the shared photos coming from?

Start here, because each source has a different switch. Look at the photo: a Shared Library photo has a small badge in the top-right corner of its thumbnail when you view both libraries, and a Messages photo comes from a conversation you can trace.

| Source | Where it shows up | How to turn it off | What happens to the photos |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Shared with You** (Messages) | Your library and the Shared with You section in Photos | Settings > Apps > Messages > Shared with You > Photos | They stay in the Messages conversation |
| **iCloud Shared Photo Library** | Mixed into your library, Memories and the Photos widget | Personal Library view, or Leave Shared Library | You can copy everything, or only your own, when you leave |
| **Shared albums** | Collections > Shared Albums | Unsubscribe, or turn off Shared Albums | Photos you saved to your library stay |
| **A shared Apple Account** | Everywhere, on every device signed in | Give each person their own Apple Account | Everything in iCloud Photos syncs until you split it |

If the last row is your situation, no Photos setting will fix it. See [how to stop iCloud Photos syncing](/blog/stop-icloud-photos-syncing) to disconnect the other device.

## If your own photos are reaching family: keep the private ones out of Photos

Sometimes the problem runs the other way: your photos are landing in a Shared Library, a family album or on a device someone else uses. Switches help, but one wrong default (like Sharing from Camera) puts photos back in front of everyone.

VaultForYou keeps the photos, videos and documents you choose in a vault outside the Photos library, so they don't appear in Photos, search, widgets or iCloud Photos, and can't land in a Shared Library. Files are encrypted on your iPhone, the keys stay in the iOS Keychain, and a vault opens only with a pattern you draw. No account is needed. After importing, delete the originals from Photos and empty Recently Deleted.

## How to turn off Shared with You photos on iPhone

Shared with You collects things people send you in Messages and shows them in the matching app: links in Safari, songs in Music, photos in Photos. Apple says photos and videos shared with you in Messages are automatically saved to your photo library, which is why your camera roll fills up with other people's pictures.

1. **Open the Messages settings** Open the Settings app, tap Apps, then tap Messages.
2. **Open Shared with You** Tap Shared with You. You'll see Automatic Sharing and a list of apps that show shared content.
3. **Turn off Photos** Turn off Photos to stop photos and videos from Messages appearing in your photo library. Turn off Automatic Sharing instead to stop it in every app.
4. **Check your library** Open Photos and scroll your library. Photos you saved yourself stay there; delete any you don't want like any other photo.

Two details worth knowing:

- **It only applies to people in your contacts.** Apple notes that content appears in Shared with You only if the sender is in your contacts. Photos from unknown numbers stay in Messages.
- **Automatic Sharing is the master switch.** Turning it off stops Shared with You in every supported app, not just Photos.

### Turn it off for one conversation

If one group chat is the problem (say, the family thread that sends dozens of photos a day), you don't have to lose the feature everywhere:

1. Open **Messages** and open the conversation.
2. Tap the contact or group icon at the top.
3. Tap **Info**, then turn off **Shared with You** (Apple's safety guide calls it **Show in Shared with You**).

### Just hide them from the library view

If you like having them but not in the main grid, open **Photos**, tap **Library**, tap the **Sort and Filter** button, tap **View Options**, then tap **Shared with You** to hide them. This changes only what the library shows. On iOS 26 and iOS 27, Apple's guide lists this same View Options menu.

## How to stop Shared Library photos from appearing in your library

An iCloud Shared Photo Library shows its photos right alongside your own by default. You can keep the library but see only yours:

1. Open **Photos** and tap **Library**.
2. On iOS 27, tap the **Sort and Filter** button, then **Library View**. On iOS 26, tap the Sort and Filter button (or tap Collections, then More). On iOS 18, tap the profile button and scroll to Library View Options.
3. Choose **Personal Library**.

That's a view, not a privacy setting: the other participants still see everything in the Shared Library. Two more switches stop new photos from going in:

- **Sharing from Camera:** Settings > Apps > Photos > Shared Library > Sharing from Camera. When it's on, Camera can add photos automatically when participants are nearby, or when you're at home if Share When At Home is on.
- **Shared Library Suggestions:** in Photos, tap Collections, tap your account in the top-right corner, tap Shared Library, then turn off Shared Library Suggestions.

For what everyone in a Shared Library can and can't see, including hidden photos, read our [iCloud Shared Library privacy guide](/blog/icloud-shared-library-privacy).

## How to leave a Shared Library on iPhone

If you don't want to be in it at all, leave. You can belong to only one Shared Library at a time.

1. Open **Settings**, tap **Apps**, then tap **Photos**. (On iOS 17 or earlier, tap Photos directly in Settings.)
2. Tap **Shared Library**.
3. Tap **Leave Shared Library**.
4. Choose to copy **everything** into your Personal Library, or **only what you contributed**.
5. Tap **Leave Shared Library** again to confirm.

Stay signed in to iCloud with iCloud Photos on until it's done. You can also start from Photos: tap Collections, tap your account, then tap Manage next to Shared Library.

If you created the library, you can't leave it, but you can **delete** it or remove a participant from the same screen. Apple's rule: participants who've been in the library for more than seven days get a copy of everything; newer participants get only what they contributed.

## How to stop shared albums from showing up

Shared albums don't mix into your library. They sit under **Collections > Shared Albums**, and a photo only lands in your library if you save it. To stop seeing them:

- **Leave one album.** Apple's personal-safety guide says a subscriber can unsubscribe from a shared album from the album's settings.
- **Turn off all shared albums.** Go to Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, then turn off **Shared Albums**.
- **Stop sharing your own album.** Remove participants or delete the album. Deleting a shared album permanently deletes its photos for everyone.

Our [shared album privacy guide](/blog/iphone-shared-album-privacy) covers album links, Public Website and the iOS 27 changes in detail.

## How to stop sharing photos with family on iPhone

Family Sharing on its own doesn't hand your photo library to your family; each person uses their own Apple Account. Photos reach family through the features above. To stop it from your side:

1. **Move private items out of the Shared Library.** Open the photo, tap More, then **Move to Personal Library**. You can only move photos you contributed.
2. **Turn off Sharing from Camera** so new shots stay personal.
3. **Leave or delete the Shared Library** if you no longer want one.
4. **Remove people from shared albums**, or delete albums you no longer need.
5. **Split any shared Apple Account.** A family iPad signed in to your account gets your whole library.

Our guide to [what Family Sharing members can see](/blog/family-sharing-photos) goes through each case.

## What turning these off does and doesn't change

Turning a share off changes what appears from now on. It doesn't recall copies.

| Who | Can they still see your photos? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You, in your library | **No**, for new Shared with You or Shared Library photos | Photos are off in Shared with You, or you switched to Personal Library view |
| You, in Messages | **Yes** | Photos stay in the conversation; only the cross-app display stops |
| Shared Library participants | **Yes**, for everything still in it | Personal Library view only changes your screen |
| Former Shared Library participants | **Yes**, for copies they kept | Leaving or being removed can copy the library to their Personal Library |
| Shared album subscribers | **Yes**, for photos they saved | Saved photos stay in their library after you stop sharing |
| Anyone on a shared Apple Account | **Yes** | Same account, same iCloud Photos library |

Remember the reverse, too: anything you send is the recipient's copy. If a sent photo is sensitive, [remove its location first](/blog/remove-location-from-photos-iphone).

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I turn off shared photos on iPhone?

It depends where they come from. For photos sent in Messages, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Shared with You and turn off Photos. For an iCloud Shared Photo Library, switch to Personal Library view or leave the library under Settings > Apps > Photos > Shared Library. For shared albums, unsubscribe, or turn off Shared Albums in Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos.

### How do I stop shared photos from appearing in my camera roll?

First find the source. Photos with a Shared Library badge come from an iCloud Shared Photo Library: tap the Sort and Filter button in Library and choose Personal Library. Photos from Messages come from Shared with You: turn off Photos in Settings > Apps > Messages > Shared with You, or hide them in Library under View Options by tapping Shared with You.

### Does turning off Shared with You delete the photos?

No. Turning it off only stops photos from Messages appearing in other apps such as Photos. The photos stay in the Messages conversation, and any photo you saved to your library yourself stays there until you delete it. To find what someone sent, open the conversation, tap their name or icon at the top, and look under Photos.

### How do I stop shared photos from Messages for just one person?

Open the conversation in Messages, tap the contact or group icon at the top, tap Info, then turn off the Shared with You switch (Apple also calls it Show in Shared with You). Photos from that person or group stop appearing in the Photos app, while everyone else's still do. The conversation itself and its attachments don't change.

### How do I leave a Shared Library on iPhone?

Go to Settings > Apps > Photos, tap Shared Library, then tap Leave Shared Library. Choose whether to copy everything from the Shared Library into your Personal Library or only what you contributed, then confirm. Stay signed in to iCloud with iCloud Photos on until it finishes. On iOS 17 or earlier, Photos is directly in Settings.

### What happens to my photos if I leave a Shared Library?

You choose: keep a copy of everything in the Shared Library, or only the photos and videos you contributed. The Shared Library itself carries on for the other participants, and photos you added stay in it. If you want something out of the Shared Library entirely, move it to your Personal Library or delete it before you leave.

### How do I stop sharing photos with family on iPhone?

Family Sharing itself doesn't share your photo library. What does is a Shared Library, a shared album, or a shared Apple Account. Move private items back with Move to Personal Library, turn off Sharing from Camera, leave or delete the Shared Library, remove people from shared albums, and make sure each person has their own Apple Account.

### How do I remove shared photos from my iPhone?

Turning off sharing stops new ones, but photos already saved to your library are ordinary photos now. Select them in Photos and delete them; they move to Recently Deleted for 30 days, then disappear. Photos in a shared album aren't in your library unless you saved them, so unsubscribing from the album removes them from your view.

## Bottom line

Find the source, then flip the matching switch: **Shared with You** for Messages, **Personal Library view** or **Leave Shared Library** for a Shared Library, **Unsubscribe** or the **Shared Albums** toggle for albums. None of these deletes what you saved or recalls what others have.

If your own photos keep ending up in front of family, give each person their own Apple Account and keep the truly private ones in an encrypted vault outside Photos.
