# How to make a private photo album on iPhone

> iPhone gives you exactly one private album, the Hidden album, and it opens with the same passcode as your phone.

Published 2026-10-29 - Updated 2026-10-29 - By VaultForYou Editorial Team

## Quick answer

You can't add a password to an album you create on iPhone, and you can't make a second Hidden album. To make a private album, hide the photos: touch and hold a photo, tap Hide, and it moves to the Hidden album, which is locked with Face ID or your passcode. For an album with its own lock, use a vault app.

- **Lock a custom album?:** No. Photos can rename, share, sort and delete albums, but not lock or hide one.
- **Built-in private album:** Hidden, under Collections -> Utilities. There's only one.
- **Its lock:** Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode, not a separate password.
- **Several private albums?:** Use a vault app. In VaultForYou, a different pattern opens a different vault.

No, you can't lock or hide an album you create on iPhone. Apple's Photos app lets you name, sort, share and delete albums and group them in folders, but there's no password or hide switch for a single album. What you can do is hide photos: they move to the **Hidden** album, which is locked by default with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. That's the one private album iPhone gives you. It keeps photos out of your library and other albums; it doesn't keep them from anyone who knows your passcode.

So "how do I make a private album?" really has four answers, depending on who you're keeping the photos from. We checked every step here against Apple's iOS 27 documentation in October 2026.

## Can you make a private photo album on iPhone?

Not one with its own password. Here's what each option actually gives you:

| Option | Can you name it? | Separate lock from your passcode? | Videos? |
|---|---|---|---|
| A regular album you create | Yes | No lock at all | Yes |
| The Hidden album | No, it's always "Hidden" | No, it uses your iPhone's unlock | Yes |
| The whole Photos app, locked | Not applicable | No, it uses your iPhone's unlock | Yes |
| A locked note with photos | Yes, the note title | Yes, with a custom Notes password | No |
| A vault app | Depends on the app | Yes | Yes |

The Hidden album is fine for keeping photos out of sight. If the person you're worried about knows your passcode, only the last two rows help.

## If you want an album with its own lock: VaultForYou

We make VaultForYou, so weigh this accordingly. It's the closest thing to a real private album on iPhone. Each vault opens only with a pattern you draw, not your iPhone passcode, and a different pattern opens a different vault, so you can keep separate private albums (more than one vault is Premium). Files are encrypted on your iPhone, the keys stay in the iOS Keychain, and nothing appears on the lock screen. Vault files live outside the Photos library, so they don't show in Photos, search, widgets or iCloud Photos. No account is needed.

> **A private album with its own pattern.** Encrypted on your iPhone, outside Photos and iCloud Photos. [Download on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/vaultforyou/id0000000000)

## How to make a hidden album on iPhone (the built-in way)

Hide the photos. There's no "create hidden album" button because the Hidden album already exists.

1. Open **Photos** and go to your library or an album.
2. Tap **Select**, then tap each photo or video you want to make private.
3. Tap the **More** button, then tap **Hide**, and confirm.
4. To view them, tap **Collections**, scroll down to **Utilities** and tap **Hidden**. Tap **View Album** and unlock.

Then make sure the lock is really on. Go to **Settings -> Apps -> Photos** and check that **Use Face ID** (or **Use Touch ID** or **Use Passcode**) is turned on. If it's off, the Hidden album opens for anyone holding your unlocked phone. On iOS 18, Utilities is at the bottom of the main Photos screen; on iOS 17 and earlier, it's under the Albums tab. Our guide to [the Photos Utilities folder](/blog/photos-utilities-iphone) shows each version.

### Hide the Hidden album too

On the same Settings screen, you can turn off **Show Hidden Album**. The album then disappears from Photos completely, which hides the fact that you have one. Nothing is deleted; turn the setting back on to see it again.

## What happens to an album when you hide its photos?

The photos vanish from it. Apple says hidden photos don't appear anywhere else in Photos, including the Library, other albums and the Photos widget. A custom album called "Private" that's full of hidden photos just looks empty.

That's the catch with trying to build a hidden album out of a normal one: the Hidden album is one flat pile. You can't make subfolders in it, and you can't have two of them. If you need to keep, say, ID scans apart from personal photos, the built-in tools can't do it.

Two more things that surprise people:

- **Deleting an album doesn't delete its photos.** Apple says they stay in your library and in any other albums.
- **Albums sync.** With iCloud Photos on, your albums are stored in iCloud and appear on every device signed in to your Apple Account, including a shared iPad or Mac.

## Who can see a private album on iPhone?

| Who | Regular album | Hidden album | Locked note (custom password) | VaultForYou vault |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Someone scrolling your unlocked phone | **Yes** | **No** | **No** | **No** |
| Someone whose face or finger is enrolled | **Yes** | **Yes** | Only if you turned on Face ID for Notes | **No** |
| Someone who knows your iPhone passcode | **Yes** | **Yes** | **No** | **No** |
| Someone on your iPad or Mac (same Apple Account) | **Yes**, with iCloud Photos | **Yes**, after unlocking that device | Sees the note title, needs the password | **No**, vault files aren't in iCloud Photos |
| Members of a shared album you created from it | **Yes** | Not applicable | Not applicable | Only if you share a link, which you can revoke |

The pattern is simple: anything inside Photos opens with your phone's own unlock. Only a separate password or pattern stops someone who has that.

## Other ways to lock a photo album on iPhone

### Lock the whole Photos app

Touch and hold the **Photos** icon on the Home Screen, tap **Require Face ID** (or Touch ID or Passcode), and confirm. Photos then asks for authentication every time it opens and relocks after you quit it. It's all or nothing: you can't lock one album and leave the rest open. Photos came with your iPhone, so Apple won't let you hide the app, only lock it. The lock also stays on that iPhone; Apple says it doesn't sync with iCloud. More in [how to lock apps on iPhone](/blog/lock-apps-iphone).

### Put a few photos in a locked note

A note can hold photos and be locked with a custom password. Set it in **Settings -> Apps -> Notes -> Password -> Use Custom Password**, add the photos to a note, tap the **More** button, then **Lock**. Limits: Apple doesn't let you lock notes with video, PDF or file attachments, the note's title stays visible, and a forgotten custom password means Apple can't help you get those notes back. The originals also stay in Photos until you delete them.

## When is the Hidden album enough?

It's enough when you want photos out of the way, and the people around you don't know your passcode:

- A surprise gift or party planning photo.
- Screenshots you don't want popping up when you show someone your vacation.
- Anything you'd rather a child didn't scroll past.

## When do you need more than the Hidden album?

- **Someone knows your passcode.** A partner, parent or roommate can open Hidden in seconds.
- **You share an Apple Account or a device.** Hidden photos sync and are viewable on every device on your account.
- **You want separate private albums.** There's only one Hidden album.
- **You don't want the photos in iCloud Photos.** Hiding doesn't stop syncing. See [how to hide photos on iPhone](/blog/hide-photos-on-iphone) for what iCloud keeps.

In any of these cases, move the photos into a vault and clean up the originals:

1. **Install the app and draw a pattern** Install VaultForYou on your iPhone; no account is needed. Connect 4 or more dots to draw a pattern, then draw it again to confirm. That pattern opens this vault.
2. **Add the photos** Open the vault and add photos and videos, selecting many at once. The app shows how many items were saved and any duplicates.
3. **Check a few items** Open several photos inside the vault to make sure they came through before you delete anything.
4. **Delete the originals from Photos** Moving a photo into a vault creates a copy. Select the same photos in Photos and delete them. With iCloud Photos on, they're deleted from your other devices too.
5. **Empty Recently Deleted** In Photos, tap Collections -> Utilities -> Recently Deleted, tap View Album and unlock. Tap Select, choose the items, then choose Delete.

Your pattern is the only key: if you forget it, that vault can't be opened, by you or by us. Export anything you can't afford to lose. With the optional encrypted iCloud backup (Premium), each file is encrypted before it goes to your iCloud; with backup off, files can't be restored if you lose your iPhone. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can you make hidden albums on iPhone?

Not in the sense of hiding an album you create. Photos has one built-in Hidden album, and you put photos in it by hiding them. Hidden photos disappear from your library and from every other album, so a custom album full of hidden photos looks empty. To keep several separate private albums, you need a vault app.

### How do you make a locked album on iPhone?

The only locked album built into Photos is the Hidden album, which opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Hide the photos you want locked: select them, tap the More button, then tap Hide. Check that Use Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode) is on in Settings -> Apps -> Photos, or the album won't ask for anything.

### Can you make an album private on iPhone?

An album you create is visible to anyone who can open Photos, and Apple offers no lock or hide option for it. Your albums also aren't shared with anyone unless you make a shared album, but with iCloud Photos on they appear on every device signed in to your Apple Account. For real privacy, hide the photos or move them into a vault.

### Can you have two hidden albums on iPhone?

No. Photos has a single Hidden album, and you can't create another one or split it into folders. If you need separate private collections, for example one for documents and one for personal photos, a vault app can do it. In VaultForYou, a different pattern opens a different vault; more than one vault is a Premium feature.

### If I hide photos from an album, are they still in the album?

They're hidden from it. Apple says hidden photos don't appear anywhere else in Photos, including other albums. The album keeps its name and cover, but the hidden photos only show in the Hidden album. Unhide them and they return to the album and your library. This is why hiding can't give you an organized, named private album.

### Does deleting an album delete the photos in it?

No. Apple says that when you delete an album, the photos and videos in it stay in your photo library and in any other albums they were added to. To remove the photos themselves, select and delete them, then empty Recently Deleted. Deleting an album is not a way to hide photos.

### Can someone see my private album if they know my passcode?

Yes, if your private album is the Hidden album or a locked Photos app. Both open with your iPhone passcode. A locked note with a custom password and a vault app with its own pattern don't accept your iPhone passcode, so they're the options that hold up against someone who knows it.

## Bottom line

You can't lock an album you create on iPhone. The built-in private album is the Hidden album: hide the photos, keep the Photos lock on, and turn off Show Hidden Album if you want it out of sight. It opens with your passcode and syncs with iCloud Photos, so for photos that need their own lock, or for more than one private album, use a vault and delete the originals.
