# iPhone photo storage: where your pictures are stored and how to make room

> Every iPhone photo lives in the Photos library on the phone, and in iCloud only if you turn iCloud Photos on; knowing which is which is how you free space without losing anything.

Published 2026-10-29 - Updated 2026-10-29 - By VaultForYou Editorial Team

## Quick answer

iPhone pictures are stored in the Photos library on the phone, at full resolution by default. With iCloud Photos on, originals also live in iCloud, and Optimize iPhone Storage keeps smaller versions on the phone. Without it, photos are included in iCloud Backup if that's on. Check usage in Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage.

- **Where they're stored:** In the Photos library on your iPhone, plus iCloud if iCloud Photos is on.
- **Check usage:** Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage (device) and Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud (cloud).
- **Free space safely:** Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage, merge duplicates, then export what you don't need on the phone.
- **Free iCloud space:** Every Apple Account gets 5 GB free. More needs an iCloud+ plan.

On the iPhone itself, in the Photos library. That's where the Camera saves every picture and video, at full resolution by default, alongside screenshots and images you save from apps. If you turn on iCloud Photos, the same library is also stored in iCloud and synced to your other devices, and Optimize iPhone Storage can keep smaller versions on the phone while the originals stay in iCloud. If iCloud Photos is off, your photos go into your iCloud backup instead, if backup is on. Storage settings decide where copies live; they don't make the photos any more private.

We checked these settings against Apple's iOS 27 documentation in October 2026. Below: where each copy lives, how much space it uses, and how to make room without losing a single photo.

## Where are iPhone pictures stored?

There are a few places a photo can live, and each one counts against a different kind of storage:

| Where | What's there | Counts against |
|---|---|---|
| **Photos library on your iPhone** | Every photo and video you take or save, full size by default | Your iPhone's built-in storage (shown as **Photos**) |
| **iCloud Photos** (if on) | Full-resolution originals of your whole library | Your iCloud storage |
| **iCloud Backup** (if iCloud Photos is off) | Your library, as part of a device backup you can't browse | Your iCloud storage |
| **Files app, On My iPhone** | Images saved as files, not into Photos | Your iPhone's storage (shown as **Apps**) |
| **Messages and other apps** | Photos sent and received in chats | Your iPhone's storage (shown as **Messages**, or under the chat app) |
| **A computer or external drive** | Anything you imported or exported | That computer or drive |

Device storage and iCloud storage are separate. Apple describes iCloud storage as cloud space that keeps your data up to date across devices signed in to the same Apple Account, while device storage is the fixed amount built into your iPhone.

## If private photos are part of the picture: VaultForYou

Every place in that table is built for convenience: the Photos library opens with your passcode, and iCloud Photos puts your pictures on every device and on iCloud.com. For the few photos that shouldn't be there, storage needs a different shape.

VaultForYou stores the photos, videos and documents you choose in a vault outside the Photos library, so they don't show up in Photos, search, widgets or iCloud Photos. A vault opens only with a pattern you draw; files are encrypted on your iPhone with keys in the iOS Keychain. The optional iCloud backup (Premium) encrypts each file before it goes to your iCloud. After importing, delete the originals and empty Recently Deleted.

> **Store private photos outside the Photos library.** Encrypted on your iPhone, opened only by your pattern. No account needed. [Download on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/vaultforyou/id0000000000)

To be clear, a vault doesn't save space: the files still live on your iPhone. The rest of this guide is about space.

## How much space are your photos using?

Check both kinds of storage, because "storage full" can mean either.

**On your iPhone:**

1. Open **Settings** and tap **General**.
2. Tap **iPhone Storage**.
3. Look at the bar at the top, then find **Photos** in the list. Apple counts photos and videos stored in the Photos app here.

The same screen may show recommendations for freeing space, plus a list of your apps and how much space each one uses.

**In iCloud:**

1. Open **Settings** and tap your name.
2. Tap **iCloud** to see how much you've used. Tap **Storage** for the breakdown by app, including Photos and Backups.

Every Apple Account gets 5 GB of iCloud storage free, shared with backups, iCloud Drive and Mail. If you need more, Apple sells iCloud+ plans in Settings.

## iCloud Photos vs. on-device storage

This is the choice that decides most of your photo storage.

| | On-device only (iCloud Photos off) | iCloud Photos + Download and Keep Originals | iCloud Photos + Optimize iPhone Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-resolution originals | On the iPhone | On the iPhone and in iCloud | In iCloud |
| Space used on the iPhone | Full | Full | Much less; smaller versions |
| Uses iCloud storage | Only if iCloud Backup includes Photos | Yes, the whole library | Yes, the whole library |
| On your other devices and iCloud.com | No | Yes | Yes |
| A deletion on one device | Only that iPhone | Syncs everywhere | Syncs everywhere |

Apple's own recommendation for saving space is the last column. When you use iCloud Photos, Optimize iPhone Storage is on by default, keeping full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and storing space-saving copies on the device when needed.

To check or change it: **Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud -> Photos -> iPhone Storage -> Optimize iPhone Storage**. In iOS 26 or earlier, the option is directly on the Photos screen.

One thing iCloud Photos isn't: a backup. Because deletions sync, a photo deleted on your iPhone is deleted in iCloud too. Our guide to [deleting photos from iPhone but keeping them in iCloud](/blog/delete-photos-iphone-keep-icloud) explains why, and what to do instead.

## How to free up photo storage on iPhone

Work through these in order, from safest to most permanent:

1. **Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage** if you use iCloud Photos and have enough iCloud space for your library.
2. **Merge duplicates.** In Photos, tap **Collections**, scroll to **Utilities** and open **Duplicates**. Tap **Merge** on a set, or **Select** to merge several. Apple keeps the best version, and the extras move to Recently Deleted.
3. **Review videos.** When storage is almost full, Apple suggests removing content such as videos and apps. Long clips you don't need are the quickest win.
4. **Clear Messages attachments** you no longer need. In a conversation, tap the contact's name, then **Photos**, then **Edit** to select and delete them.
5. **Export what you want to keep but not carry.** Move it to a computer or external drive (below), then delete it from Photos.
6. **Empty Recently Deleted** only when you're sure. Deleted items wait there for 30 days; see our [Recently Deleted guide](/blog/recently-deleted-iphone) before you clear it.

## Photo storage options for iPhone beyond iCloud

You don't have to keep everything in one place. Common options:

- **A computer.** Import with a USB cable using Photos on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on a Windows PC. Good as a second copy of your whole library.
- **An external drive or SD card.** Connect it to your iPhone, select photos in Photos, tap the More button and choose **Export Unmodified Original**, then choose the drive under Locations. Apple says the drive needs a single partition and a supported format such as APFS, exFAT or FAT32. Photos in a locked Hidden album won't transfer.
- **Google Photos.** Google says each Google Account comes with up to 15 GB of storage, and you can back up in Original quality or a compressed Storage saver quality. Deleting from the Google Photos app can also delete from your iPhone, so read its settings carefully.
- **A larger iCloud+ plan**, if you'd rather keep one library and let Optimize iPhone Storage handle the phone.

Whatever you choose, keep at least two copies of photos you can't replace. Our guide to [what's in an iPhone backup](/blog/what-is-in-an-iphone-backup) explains where backups fit.

## Who can see your photos in each place?

Storage choices also decide who can open your pictures. Here's how each location compares:

| Where the photo is stored | Who can see it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Photos library on your iPhone | Anyone who can unlock your iPhone | Photos opens without a separate lock |
| Hidden album | Anyone with your passcode, or an enrolled face or finger | It's locked with your iPhone's own unlock |
| iCloud Photos | Your devices on the same Apple Account, and anyone signed in at iCloud.com | The library syncs everywhere you're signed in |
| iCloud Photos, for Apple | With standard data protection, Apple holds the keys; with Advanced Data Protection, it doesn't | Advanced Data Protection end-to-end encrypts Photos |
| A computer or external drive | Anyone with access to that computer or drive | Depends on its own password or encryption |
| An encrypted vault app | Only someone with the vault's own code or pattern | It sits outside the Photos library |

If the "who can see it" column matters more to you than the space, our guides to [whether iCloud is encrypted](/blog/is-icloud-encrypted) and [keeping private photos on iPhone](/blog/private-photos-iphone) go further.

## Storage mistakes that lose photos

- **Deleting photos to save space while iCloud Photos is on.** That deletes them from iCloud too. Use Optimize iPhone Storage instead.
- **Letting iCloud fill up.** Apple says new photos stop uploading to iCloud Photos when your storage is full.
- **Turning off iCloud Photos without downloading originals.** Apple warns that optimized photos aren't original resolution.
- **Trusting one copy.** A phone, a cloud library and a drive can each fail or be deleted. Keep two.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where are iPhone pics stored?

In the Photos library on your iPhone. That's where the Camera saves them, along with screenshots and images you save from apps. If iCloud Photos is on, the same library is also stored in iCloud and synced to your other devices. If it's off and iCloud Backup is on, your photos are included in your iCloud backup instead, which you can't browse photo by photo.

### How much free photo storage do I get on iPhone?

Your iPhone has a fixed amount of built-in storage, shared by photos, apps, messages and everything else. In iCloud, every Apple Account gets 5 GB free, which also covers backups, iCloud Drive and Mail, so a photo library outgrows it quickly. To store more in iCloud you need an iCloud+ plan, which you can buy in Settings.

### Does Optimize iPhone Storage lower photo quality?

Only the copy on your phone, and only when space is needed. Your full-resolution originals stay in iCloud, while the iPhone keeps space-saving versions, starting with photos you open least. The originals download when you need them, so prints, edits and exports still use full quality. If you turn off iCloud Photos later, download originals first.

### Do photos in iCloud take up space on my iPhone?

Yes, some. With iCloud Photos on, every photo has a version on your iPhone. If Download and Keep Originals is selected, those are full-size copies. With Optimize iPhone Storage, they're smaller versions, so the library takes much less room but still isn't zero. To see the exact amount, go to Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage and look at Photos.

### Why is my iPhone storage full if my photos are in iCloud?

Check three things. First, make sure Optimize iPhone Storage is selected under Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud -> Photos -> iPhone Storage. Second, look at Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage: apps, Messages attachments and downloaded videos often use more than Photos. Third, check whether your iCloud storage is full, because new photos stop uploading when it is.

### Can I store iPhone photos on an external drive?

Yes. Connect a USB drive or SD card reader, select photos in Photos, tap the More button and choose Export Unmodified Original, then pick the drive under Locations. The drive must use a supported format such as APFS, exFAT or FAT32. Photos in a locked Hidden album won't transfer. Once you've checked the exported files, you can delete the originals to free space.

### What's the best photo storage for iPhone?

For most people, iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage: it's built in, keeps originals and syncs everywhere. Add a second copy on a computer or external drive, since iCloud Photos syncs deletions too. If you already use Google, Google Photos is an alternative that shares your Google Account's 15 GB. Keep private photos in an encrypted vault rather than a synced library.

## Bottom line

Your iPhone pictures live in the Photos library on the phone and, if iCloud Photos is on, in iCloud as well. To make room without losing anything, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage, merge duplicates and export what you don't need on the phone to a computer or drive. Keep a second copy of everything irreplaceable, and keep private photos outside the synced library altogether.
