# iCloud Shared Photo Library privacy: what others can see, including hidden photos

> Hiding a photo in a Shared Library hides it for everyone, not from everyone, so the only private photo is one that never goes in.

## Quick answer

Yes. Everyone in an iCloud Shared Photo Library can see everything in it, including photos you hide: Apple says a hidden Shared Library photo moves to the Hidden album for all participants, who can view or unhide it. Photos in your Personal Library stay private. To keep a photo from others, move it to your Personal Library before you hide it.

- **Hidden photos:** Hiding a Shared Library photo hides it for all participants, who can still open it in Hidden.
- **Your personal photos:** Photos you never added stay in your Personal Library and aren't visible to participants.
- **Automatic adds:** Sharing from Camera can add photos when participants are nearby or when you're at home.
- **Encryption:** End-to-end encrypted only if every participant has Advanced Data Protection turned on.

Yes, everyone in an iCloud Shared Photo Library can see everything in it, and that includes photos you hide. Apple says that if you hide a photo in a Shared Library, it moves to the Hidden album **for all participants**, where they can view it or unhide it. Photos in your Personal Library are a different story: participants can't see them, hidden or not. The real risk is photos going in without you noticing, because Sharing from Camera can add them automatically when other participants are nearby or when you're at home. Hiding controls where a photo shows up, not who can see it.

We checked these settings against Apple's iOS 27 documentation in October 2026.

## If a photo must stay out of the Shared Library: VaultForYou

A Shared Library is built to collect photos, so private ones can slip in through the Camera, a suggestion or a tap during setup. The surest way to keep a photo out is to take it out of the Photos library.

VaultForYou keeps the photos, videos and documents you choose in a vault outside the Photos library, so they can't be moved, suggested or auto-shared into a Shared Library, and they don't appear in Photos, search, widgets or iCloud Photos. Files are encrypted on your iPhone, the keys stay in the iOS Keychain, and a vault opens only with a pattern you draw. After importing, delete the originals from Photos and empty Recently Deleted. Encrypted iCloud backup is optional (Premium).

## How an iCloud Shared Photo Library works

A Shared Library is a second photo library you share with up to five other people, six in total including the person who set it up. Here's what Apple's documentation says about it:

- **Adding a photo moves it.** Photos you contribute move out of your Personal Library into the Shared Library. They're no longer in your personal library.
- **Everyone has the same permissions.** All participants can add, edit and delete content, and everyone sees edits, captions, keywords, favorites and date changes in real time.
- **It feeds shared features.** Shared Library content is added to every participant's Memories, featured photos and Photos widget.
- **One at a time.** You can belong to only one Shared Library.
- **The creator pays for storage.** Everything counts against the creator's iCloud storage.
- **Requirements.** You need iCloud Photos on and iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16.1 or macOS Ventura or later. Family Sharing isn't required, but Apple says people under 13 can only join or create one with members of their Family Sharing group.

In Photos, shared items appear alongside your own, with a small badge on the thumbnail when you're viewing both libraries.

## Who can see what in a Shared Library?

| Who | Can they see it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Participants, for photos in the Shared Library | **Yes** | Everyone can view, edit and delete shared content |
| Participants, for Shared Library photos you hid | **Yes** | Hiding moves the photo to the Hidden album for all participants |
| Participants, for your Personal Library | **No** | Only what's in the Shared Library is shared |
| Participants, for personal photos you hid | **No** | They never left your Personal Library |
| Participants, through Memories and the widget | **Yes**, shared photos only | Shared content feeds everyone's Memories, featured photos and widget |
| Former participants | **Yes**, for copies they kept | Leaving or being removed can copy the library to their Personal Library |
| Anyone signed in to your Apple Account | **Yes**, both libraries | Same account, same view |
| Apple | **Depends on encryption** | End-to-end encrypted only if all participants use Advanced Data Protection |

## What happens when you hide a photo in a Shared Library?

It disappears from the library view **for everyone** and moves to everyone's Hidden album. Each participant can open their Hidden album, view the photo and unhide it. Hiding a shared photo tidies the shared view; it doesn't make the photo private.

To make a shared photo private again, take it out of the Shared Library first:

1. Open the photo in **Photos**.
2. Tap **More**, then tap **Move to Personal Library**.
3. Now hide it (tap More, then Hide), or move it somewhere safer.

You can move only photos you contributed. A photo someone else added stays theirs to move or delete. And moving a photo back doesn't erase copies another participant already saved or kept when leaving.

## Do hidden photos go to iCloud?

Yes. With iCloud Photos turned on, hidden photos upload to iCloud and sync like any other photo, and the hidden status syncs too. Apple's iCloud.com guide describes hiding as a way to keep a photo in iCloud Photos without it appearing in your library; on iCloud.com, it's in the Hidden album.

Two details matter for privacy:

- **Standard data protection** (the default) means Apple holds the keys to your iCloud Photos.
- **Advanced Data Protection** end-to-end encrypts photo content, but Apple keeps some metadata under standard protection, including whether an item is marked as hidden.

We cover this in more depth in [can anyone see your hidden photos on iCloud](/blog/hidden-photos-icloud).

## How do photos end up in a Shared Library without you noticing?

Usually through settings chosen once during setup and forgotten:

- **Share Automatically:** Camera adds photos to the Shared Library when you're near other participants (they need Bluetooth on and to be signed in).
- **Share When At Home:** photos you take at home go straight in.
- **The Camera button:** a Shared Library button at the top of Camera switches where new shots save. By default, Camera saves to your Personal Library, but while the button is on, everything you shoot goes to the Shared Library.
- **Suggestions:** Photos suggests pictures to add, such as photos taken when participants were nearby.
- **Setup:** when you create or join, you're asked to choose past photos and videos to move in, and it's easy to move more than you meant to.

## How to keep photos out of a Shared Library

These steps stop new photos going in and pull back the ones you added:

1. **Turn off Sharing from Camera** Go to Settings > Apps > Photos > Shared Library > Sharing from Camera and turn it off, or switch off Share Automatically and Share When At Home.
2. **Check the Camera button** Open Camera. If the Shared Library button at the top is on, tap it so new shots save to your Personal Library.
3. **Turn off suggestions** In Photos, tap Collections, tap your account in the top-right corner, tap Shared Library, then turn off Shared Library Suggestions.
4. **Move private photos back** Open a photo you added to the Shared Library, tap More, then tap Move to Personal Library. Do this before you hide it.
5. **Check what's left** In Library, use the Sort and Filter button to choose Shared Library view and scroll through what everyone can see.

If you'd rather not be in the Shared Library at all, our guide to [turning off shared photos on iPhone](/blog/turn-off-shared-photos-iphone) walks through leaving it, plus Shared with You and shared albums.

## Deleting, leaving, and what other people keep

- **Deleting:** when a participant deletes a photo, it goes to Recently Deleted. Apple says only the person who contributed it can delete it from there. You get a notification when something you added is deleted, and you can move it from Recently Deleted back to your Personal Library within 30 days.
- **Leaving:** you choose to copy everything into your Personal Library, or only what you contributed.
- **Being removed, or the library being deleted:** participants who've been in it for more than seven days receive everything; newer ones get only their own contributions.

So a photo that's been in a Shared Library for a while should be treated as shared for good, even after you leave or delete the library.

## When a Shared Library is fine, and when it isn't

**It's fine** for what Apple designed it for: a family pooling vacation and kids' photos, with everyone happy for everyone else to see, edit and delete them.

**It isn't** when you have photos that one participant shouldn't see. You'd be relying on never tapping the wrong button in Camera, never accepting a suggestion and never moving the wrong batch. Keep those photos out of the Photos library entirely, and if your concern is family more broadly, see [what Family Sharing members can see](/blog/family-sharing-photos).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can people in my Shared Library see my hidden photos?

Yes, if the hidden photo is in the Shared Library. Apple says hiding a Shared Library photo moves it to the Hidden album for all participants, where they can view it or stop hiding it. Photos you hide in your Personal Library are different: they never reach the Shared Library, so participants can't see them. Move a photo to your Personal Library first, then hide it.

### Do hidden photos go to iCloud?

Yes. With iCloud Photos on, hidden photos upload and sync like every other photo, and they stay hidden on your other devices and in the Hidden album on iCloud.com. Hiding only changes where a photo appears. If you don't want a photo in iCloud Photos at all, it has to leave the Photos library or you have to turn off iCloud Photos.

### Can Shared Library members see my personal library?

No. A Shared Library is separate from your Personal Library. Participants see only what's been moved or saved into the Shared Library. Your personal photos, including hidden ones, stay yours. The catch is that Sharing from Camera and setup choices can move photos into the Shared Library without much thought, so check those settings.

### What's the difference between a shared album and a Shared Library?

A shared album is an album of chosen photos that you share with people you pick; it doesn't mix into anyone's library. An iCloud Shared Photo Library is a whole second library for up to six people. Its photos appear alongside each participant's own, everyone can add, edit and delete, and it feeds everyone's Memories and Photos widget.

### Can someone in my Shared Library delete my photos?

Yes. All participants can add, edit and delete content in a Shared Library. When a participant deletes a photo, it goes to Recently Deleted, and Apple says only the person who contributed it can delete it from there. You get a notification when something you added is deleted, and you can move it back to your Personal Library within 30 days.

### What happens to my photos if I leave a Shared Library?

When you leave, you choose whether to copy everything from the Shared Library into your Personal Library or only what you contributed. The Shared Library keeps going for the others, including photos you added. If the creator deletes the library or removes you, participants who've been in it more than seven days get everything; newer ones get only their own photos.

### How do I stop photos from automatically going to my Shared Library?

Go to Settings > Apps > Photos > Shared Library > Sharing from Camera. Turn off Sharing from Camera, or turn off Share Automatically and Share When At Home. Then open Camera and make sure the Shared Library button at the top is off, so new photos save to your Personal Library. You can also turn off Shared Library Suggestions.

### Is iCloud Shared Photo Library end-to-end encrypted?

Only if every participant has Advanced Data Protection turned on. Apple says that with standard data protection, content you share in iCloud isn't end-to-end encrypted. Advanced Data Protection keeps shared content end-to-end encrypted, including iCloud Shared Photo Library, as long as all participants have it enabled. Shared albums don't support it at all.

## Bottom line

In an iCloud Shared Photo Library, everyone sees everything, and hiding a photo hides it for all participants, not from them. Your Personal Library stays private. Turn off Sharing from Camera, keep the Camera button off, move private photos back with Move to Personal Library, and assume anything that's been shared for more than a week may already be in someone else's library. For photos that must never go in, keep them outside Photos.
