# How to hide and lock photos on iPad

> The iPad's Hidden album is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or the iPad passcode, which doesn't help much on an iPad the whole family unlocks.

## Quick answer

To hide a photo on iPad, open Photos, touch and hold it, tap Hide, and confirm. It moves to the Hidden album (Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden), locked with Face ID, Touch ID or the iPad passcode. To lock all photos, touch and hold the Photos icon and tap Require Face ID. Anyone with the iPad passcode can still open both.

- **Hidden album on iPad:** Photos -> sidebar -> Utilities -> Hidden, then View Album and unlock.
- **Lock the whole app:** Touch and hold Photos -> Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode).
- **The weak spot:** Both open with the iPad passcode, and many families share it.
- **Shared iPad?:** With iCloud Photos on, it shows your iPhone's library, hidden photos included.

Open **Photos** on your iPad, touch and hold the photo, tap **Hide**, and confirm. It moves to the **Hidden** album under **Utilities**, which is locked by default with Face ID, Touch ID or the iPad passcode. To lock every photo at once, touch and hold the **Photos** icon and tap **Require Face ID**. Both work well against a child grabbing the iPad or a guest scrolling through it. Neither adds a separate password: anyone who knows the iPad passcode gets in, and with iCloud Photos on, the iPad also carries every photo you hid on your iPhone.

That last part is why so many people search for this on a family iPad. Here's how to hide and lock photos on iPad, who can still open them, and how to keep private photos off a shared iPad altogether. We checked these steps against Apple's iPadOS 27 documentation in October 2026.

## If the problem is a shared iPad: keep the photos off it

Hiding and locking only work on photos that are on the iPad. Often the better fix is making sure they never get there. If the family iPad is signed in to your Apple Account with iCloud Photos on, it receives your whole library, Hidden album included.

VaultForYou is an iPhone app, and it solves this from your iPhone. Photos you move into a vault leave the Photos library, so they're no longer in iCloud Photos and don't sync to the iPad. A vault opens only with a pattern you draw, files are encrypted on your iPhone with the keys in the iOS Keychain, and nothing shows on the lock screen. After importing, delete the originals in Photos and empty Recently Deleted.

## How to hide photos on iPad

1. Open the **Photos** app.
2. Touch and hold the photo or video, tap **Hide**, and confirm.
3. To hide several, open your library or a collection, tap **Select**, tap each item, tap the **More** button, then tap **Hide**.

Hidden photos disappear from your library, your albums and the Photos widget. Apple says you can't view them anywhere else in Photos. With iCloud Photos on, they're hidden on your iPhone and Mac too.

## Where is the Hidden album on iPad?

It's under **Utilities** in the Photos sidebar:

1. Open **Photos**. If you don't see the sidebar, tap the sidebar button in the upper-left corner.
2. Tap **Utilities**, then tap **Hidden**.
3. Tap **View Album** and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
4. To unhide, tap the photo, tap the **More** button, then **Unhide**.

Can't see it? Go to **Settings -> Apps -> Photos** and turn on **Show Hidden Album**. Apple says it's on by default on iPad, but if someone switched it off, the album vanishes from Photos without deleting anything. Our guide to [the Photos Utilities folder](/blog/photos-utilities-iphone) covers the rest of that section.

## How to lock photos on iPad

### Option 1: Check the Hidden album lock

On iPadOS 16.1 and later, the Hidden and Recently Deleted collections are locked by default. That setting can be turned off, so check it: go to **Settings -> Apps -> Photos** and make sure **Use Face ID** (or **Use Touch ID** or **Use Passcode**) is on. On the same screen, turning off **Show Hidden Album** removes the album from view entirely.

### Option 2: Lock the whole Photos app

1. Go to the Home Screen and touch and hold the **Photos** icon until the Quick Actions menu opens.
2. Tap **Require Face ID** (or **Touch ID** or **Passcode**).
3. Tap **Require Face ID** again to confirm.

Photos now needs authentication every time it opens and relocks after you quit it. Apple says information inside a locked app also stays out of notification previews, search and Siri suggestions. Photos came with the iPad, so you can lock it but can't hide it. And the lock stays on this iPad: Apple says locked status doesn't sync with iCloud.

### Option 3: Guided Access when you hand the iPad over

If a child uses your iPad for one game or video app, Guided Access keeps them in that app. Turn it on in **Settings -> Accessibility -> Guided Access**, set a passcode under **Passcode Settings**, open the app, and start a session from Control Center, Siri or the Accessibility Shortcut. To end it, triple-click the top button (or the Home button) and enter the Guided Access passcode or use Face ID or Touch ID.

## What hiding and locking don't do on iPad

- **They don't add a password of their own.** The Hidden album and a locked Photos app both open with the iPad passcode.
- **They don't stop iCloud Photos.** Hidden photos still sync, and they're still in iCloud and on your other devices.
- **They don't encrypt anything separately.** Hiding changes where Photos displays a photo; the photo stays in the same library.
- **They don't lock one album.** iPad has no per-album password. For workarounds, see [how to make a private photo album](/blog/private-photo-album-iphone).

## Who can see hidden photos on an iPad?

| Who | Can they see your hidden photos? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A guest scrolling the iPad's library or albums | **No** | Hidden items only appear in the Hidden album. |
| A child or guest who doesn't know the passcode | **No**, if the lock is on | Hidden asks for Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode. |
| Anyone who knows the iPad passcode | **Yes** | The passcode unlocks the Hidden album and a locked Photos app. |
| Anyone whose face or fingerprint is enrolled on the iPad | **Yes** | Face ID or Touch ID unlocks both. |
| Anyone holding the unlocked iPad, if the Photos lock is off | **Yes** | Turning off Use Face ID / Touch ID / Passcode removes the check. |
| A family member on an iPad signed in to **your** Apple Account | **Yes**, with the iPad passcode | iCloud Photos syncs your whole library there, Hidden album included. |
| A family member with their **own** Apple Account | **No** | Separate accounts have separate libraries, unless you share a Shared Library. |

## Stop iPhone photos from showing on a shared iPad

If the iPad is signed in to your Apple Account, turn off iCloud Photos on the iPad only:

1. On the iPad, open **Settings** and tap your name.
2. Tap **iCloud**, then **Photos**.
3. Turn off **Sync this iPad**.
4. Choose **Remove from iPad** to take your synced photos off it. Your library stays on your iPhone and in iCloud.

The lasting fix is to give each family member their own Apple Account, so the iPad isn't carrying yours at all. If you share photos on purpose through an iCloud Shared Photo Library, that's a separate setting; see [Shared Library privacy](/blog/icloud-shared-library-privacy). More in [how to stop iCloud Photos syncing](/blog/stop-icloud-photos-syncing) and [Family Sharing and photos](/blog/family-sharing-photos).

## When is the Hidden album enough on iPad?

It's enough when the iPad is yours, nobody else knows the passcode, and you only want photos out of the library view, for example before passing the iPad around at dinner. It isn't enough when the whole family knows the passcode, when the iPad is signed in to your Apple Account for everyone to use, or when the photos shouldn't be in iCloud at all. In those cases, take the photos off the iPad: turn off sync there, or keep them in a vault on your iPhone and delete the originals from Photos and Recently Deleted. Your pattern is the only key to a vault, so export anything you can't afford to lose.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you lock photos on iPad?

There are two built-in ways. Hide the photos, which moves them to the Hidden album, locked by default with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Or lock the whole Photos app: touch and hold its icon, tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode), and confirm. Both use the iPad's own unlock, so anyone with the passcode can open them.

### How do I hide photos on my iPad?

Open Photos, touch and hold the photo or video, tap Hide, and confirm. For several at once, tap Select, tap each item, tap the More button, then Hide. The photos disappear from your library, albums and the Photos widget and move to the Hidden album. With iCloud Photos on, they're hidden on your other devices too.

### Where are hidden photos on iPad?

In the Hidden album under Utilities. Open Photos, tap the sidebar button in the upper-left corner if the sidebar isn't showing, tap Utilities, then Hidden. Tap View Album and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. If Hidden isn't listed, turn on Show Hidden Album in Settings -> Apps -> Photos.

### Can my family see my hidden photos on a shared iPad?

If the iPad is signed in to your Apple Account with iCloud Photos on, it has your whole library, hidden photos included. Anyone who knows the iPad passcode, or whose face or fingerprint is enrolled, can open the Hidden album. Turn off Sync this iPad and choose Remove from iPad, or keep private photos out of iCloud Photos.

### Is the Hidden album on iPad password protected?

It's locked by default on iPadOS 16.1 and later, but not with a separate password. It opens with the same Face ID, Touch ID or passcode that unlocks the iPad. The lock can also be turned off in Settings -> Apps -> Photos by switching off Use Face ID, Use Touch ID or Use Passcode, so check that setting.

### Do photos I hide on iPhone also hide on iPad?

Yes, when both devices use iCloud Photos with the same Apple Account. Apple says photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too. That keeps them out of the iPad's library view, but they're in the iPad's Hidden album, which opens with the iPad's own passcode, not your iPhone's.

### Can I lock a single album on iPad?

No. Photos on iPad can't put a password on one album. You can hide photos, which moves them into the single Hidden album, or lock the entire Photos app. If you need several separately locked collections, that takes an app with its own lock; see our guide on making a private photo album for the options.

### How do I let my kid use the iPad without seeing my photos?

Lock the Photos app with Require Face ID, and keep private photos hidden or off the iPad. For extra control, use Guided Access: open the app your child should use, start Guided Access from Settings -> Accessibility -> Guided Access, and the iPad stays in that one app until you end the session with a passcode or Face ID.

## Bottom line

To hide photos on iPad, tap **Hide**; to lock them, keep the Hidden album lock on or lock the whole Photos app with **Require Face ID**. Both stop a guest or a child, and neither stops someone with the iPad passcode. On a shared iPad, the stronger move is to keep private photos off it: turn off **Sync this iPad**, give everyone their own Apple Account, or keep those photos outside iCloud Photos.
