# How to remove photos from Apple Watch and stop them syncing

> The photos on your Apple Watch come from your iPhone, so the fix happens in the Apple Watch app, where one switch turns the main feeds off.

## Quick answer

To remove photos from Apple Watch, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Photos, and turn off Photo Syncing. That stops your synced album, Memories and featured photos. To remove a single photo, take it out of the synced album (Favorites by default) in the iPhone's Photos app. Then change any Photos watch face.

- **The switch:** Apple Watch app on iPhone -> My Watch -> Photos -> Photo Syncing off.
- **One photo:** Remove it from the synced album on your iPhone. New watches sync Favorites.
- **Other feeds:** Sync Memories, Sync Featured Photos and a shuffling Photos watch face.
- **Lock the wrist:** Keep a watch passcode and Wrist Detection on; turn on Tap to Show Full Notification.

Open the **Apple Watch app** on your iPhone, tap **My Watch -> Photos**, and turn off **Photo Syncing**. That one switch stops your iPhone from sending Memories, featured photos and your chosen album to the watch. To remove just one photo, take it out of the synced album in the iPhone's Photos app; on a new watch that album is **Favorites**, so anything you heart on your iPhone appears on your wrist. Then check your watch face, because a Photos face can show a new picture every time you raise your wrist. The limit: these settings control what the watch shows. They don't make a photo private on your iPhone.

We checked these steps against Apple's Apple Watch User Guide in October 2026. Labels can vary slightly between watchOS versions.

## How do you remove photos from Apple Watch?

There are two ways, depending on whether you want the watch to show any photos at all.

### Remove all photos: turn off Photo Syncing

1. **Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone** Use the iPhone that's paired with your watch. Photo settings live here, not on the watch.
2. **Go to Photos** Tap My Watch at the bottom, then tap Photos.
3. **Turn off Photo Syncing** Turn off Photo Syncing. Your iPhone stops syncing Memories, featured photos and photos from the album you chose.
4. **Check the watch** Open the Photos app on your Apple Watch to confirm what's left, and switch away from any Photos watch face.

Apple's guide doesn't say what happens to photos already stored on the watch when you turn the switch off, so do the last step and check. You can see how many photos are on the watch under **Settings -> General -> About** on the watch, or in the Apple Watch app under **My Watch -> General -> About**.

### Remove one photo: take it out of the synced album

Apple's instruction is simple: to remove a photo from Apple Watch, open the Photos app on your iPhone and remove the image from the album you've synced.

1. On your iPhone, check which album syncs: Apple Watch app -> **My Watch -> Photos -> Sync Album**.
2. Open that album in the Photos app.
3. Remove the photo from the album. If the album is **Favorites**, unfavorite the photo instead.

Removing a photo from an album doesn't delete it from your library. It only stops the watch from receiving it.

## Where do the photos on your Apple Watch come from?

The photos in your watch's Photos app and on a Photos face come from the iPhone it's paired with, through these routes:

| Route | What it shows | Where to control it |
|---|---|---|
| Synced album | One album you choose; Favorites on a new watch | My Watch -> Photos -> Sync Album |
| Memories | Memories from your iPhone's photo library | My Watch -> Photos -> Sync Memories |
| Featured photos | Photos your iPhone features automatically | My Watch -> Photos -> Sync Featured Photos |
| Photos watch face | Photos you chose, an album, or a daily shuffle | Face Gallery or My Faces in the Apple Watch app |
| Notifications | Message content when you raise your wrist | Settings -> Notifications on the watch |

Photo Syncing covers the first three. The watch face and notifications have their own settings, covered below.

## Keep photos on your watch, but choose which ones

If you like seeing photos on your wrist, narrow the feed instead of turning it off:

1. **Make a dedicated album.** In the Photos app on your iPhone, create an album with only photos you're happy for anyone to see.
2. **Sync only that album.** In the Apple Watch app, go to **My Watch -> Photos -> Sync Album** and choose it.
3. **Turn off the automatic feeds.** On the same screen, turn off **Sync Memories** and **Sync Featured Photos**.
4. **Set a limit.** **My Watch -> Photos -> Photos Limit** caps how many photos the watch stores.

You can also shape what your iPhone features in the first place. In the Photos app, open a photo of someone and tap **Don't Feature a Person** to show them less often or never. Or tap **Collections**, tap your account, and turn off **Show Featured Content** to stop featured photos and memories being generated. Our guides to [iPhone photo Memories](/blog/iphone-photo-memories) and the [People album](/blog/people-album-iphone) go further.

## How to stop photos showing on your watch face

The Photos watch face is the most visible route: Apple says a new photo appears every time you raise your wrist or tap the display.

- **Shuffle** picks sixteen photos a day automatically, from Featured, from People, or from a collection you choose. That's where unexpected photos usually come from.
- **Choose Photos** shows only the photos you select, up to 24.

To switch faces, touch and hold the current face and swipe to another one. To remove the Photos face, touch and hold, swipe to it, swipe up and tap **Remove**. On iPhone, tap **Edit** under **My Faces** in the Apple Watch app. You can rebuild it later with Choose Photos.

## Who can see the photos on your Apple Watch?

| Who | Can they see your watch photos? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Someone next to you when you raise your wrist | **Yes, with a Photos face** | A new photo appears with every wrist raise or tap. |
| Someone picking up the watch while you're not wearing it | **Not without the passcode** | With Wrist Detection on (the default), the watch locks when you take it off. |
| Someone who knows your watch passcode | **Yes** | The passcode unlocks everything on the watch. |
| Someone who can unlock your iPhone | **Possibly** | With Unlock with iPhone on, unlocking the iPhone can unlock the watch nearby. |
| Someone reading a notification over your shoulder | **Possibly** | Message content appears a few seconds after the sender's name unless you change it. |
| Anyone, for photos you hid on iPhone | **Not through the watch** | Apple says hidden photos can't be viewed anywhere outside the Hidden collection. |

Three settings tighten this up:

- **Use a different watch passcode.** Apple says your watch passcode can differ from your iPhone's and that it's better if it does. Change it in **Settings -> Passcode -> Change Passcode** on the watch.
- **Keep Wrist Detection on.** In **Settings -> Passcode**, it locks the watch automatically when you're not wearing it.
- **Turn on Tap to Show Full Notification.** In **Settings -> Notifications** on the watch, this keeps message content hidden until you tap.

## Hidden photos and Apple Watch

Apple says photos you hide on iPhone move to the Hidden collection and can't be viewed anywhere else, which takes them out of the albums your watch can sync. It's a quick fix for a photo that shouldn't be in your Favorites.

But the Hidden collection opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode, and with iCloud Photos on, it's hidden the same way on all your devices. For a full explanation, see [how to hide photos on iPhone](/blog/hide-photos-on-iphone).

## When these settings are enough

For most people, the fix is done once Photo Syncing is off, or limited to one safe album, and the watch face is changed. That keeps photos off your wrist at work, at the gym and around family.

## When you need more than a sync setting

Watch settings only control what reaches your wrist. Every photo still sits in the Photos app on your iPhone, where anyone who knows your passcode can scroll to it, and with iCloud Photos on, it's on your other devices too. For the handful of photos that shouldn't be in Photos at all, the fix is on the iPhone. See [how to lock photos on iPhone](/blog/lock-photos-on-iphone) for the options.

We make VaultForYou, so weigh our pick accordingly. VaultForYou is an iPhone app that keeps the photos, videos and documents you choose in a vault opened only with a pattern you draw. Files are encrypted on your iPhone and stored outside the Photos library, so they don't show up in Photos, search or widgets. After moving photos in, delete the originals from Photos and empty Recently Deleted.

> **Keep private photos out of the Photos library.** An encrypted vault on your iPhone, opened by a pattern you draw. No account needed. [Download on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/vaultforyou/id0000000000)

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I remove photos from my Apple Watch?

To remove everything, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Photos, and turn off Photo Syncing. To remove one photo, Apple says to open the Photos app on your iPhone and remove the image from the album you've synced, which is Favorites unless you changed it. Then check any Photos watch face too.

### Does turning off Photo Syncing delete photos from Apple Watch?

Apple's guide says turning it off stops your iPhone from syncing Memories, featured photos and your chosen album, but it doesn't spell out what happens to photos already stored on the watch. After you switch it off, open the Photos app on the watch and check. You can also see the photo count under Settings -> General -> About on the watch.

### Why are random photos showing on my Apple Watch?

Usually one of three things. A new watch syncs your Favorites album, so anything you favorite on iPhone shows up. Sync Memories and Sync Featured Photos pull in photos the iPhone picks for you. And a Photos watch face set to Shuffle shows sixteen automatically chosen photos a day from Featured, People or a collection.

### How do I stop photos from showing on my Apple Watch face?

Switch to a different face, or remove the Photos face. On the watch, touch and hold the face, swipe to the Photos face, swipe up and tap Remove. Or in the Apple Watch app, tap Edit under My Faces. To keep a Photos face, recreate it with Choose Photos, which uses up to 24 photos you pick.

### Can you delete photos directly on Apple Watch?

Apple's Apple Watch guide doesn't describe deleting a photo on the watch itself. The Photos app on the watch lets you browse, zoom and share. To remove a photo, Apple says to remove it from the synced album in the Photos app on your iPhone, or you can turn off Photo Syncing in the Apple Watch app.

### Do hidden photos show on Apple Watch?

Apple says hidden photos move to the Hidden collection on iPhone and can't be viewed anywhere else, so hiding a photo takes it out of the albums your watch can sync. Still, check the watch afterward, and keep sensitive photos out of the synced album and Favorites altogether. The Hidden collection opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

### How many photos can an Apple Watch store?

Apple says it depends on available space. To cap it, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and go to My Watch -> Photos -> Photos Limit. To see how many photos are on the watch, go to Settings -> General -> About on the watch, and check Settings -> General -> Storage for how much space they use.

### Should my Apple Watch passcode be different from my iPhone passcode?

Yes. Apple says your Apple Watch passcode can be different from your iPhone passcode and that it's better to use different ones. That way someone who knows your iPhone code can't automatically open your watch. Also check Unlock with iPhone in the Apple Watch app, which unlocks the watch when you unlock your iPhone.

## Bottom line

To remove photos from Apple Watch, turn off **Photo Syncing** in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone (**My Watch -> Photos**), or remove a single photo from the synced album, Favorites by default. Then replace any shuffling Photos face, give the watch its own passcode, and turn on Tap to Show Full Notification. If a photo shouldn't be seen on any device, deal with it on the iPhone, not the watch.
