# How to hide messages on iPhone: texts, iMessage and alerts

> iPhone has no hidden folder for conversations, but a few settings keep texts off your Lock Screen, out of search and off your other devices. All of them open with your passcode.

Published 2026-10-31 - Updated 2026-10-31 - By VaultForYou Editorial Team - Checked against iOS 27 - Oct 31, 2026

## Quick answer

To hide messages on iPhone, go to Settings -> Notifications -> Messages and set Show Previews to Never or When Unlocked. Turn on Hide Alerts for a conversation, and lock the Messages app with Require Face ID. Messages can't go in the Hidden folder, and anyone with your passcode can still open it.

- **Hide previews:** Settings -> Notifications -> Messages -> Show Previews -> Never or When Unlocked.
- **Lock Messages:** Touch and hold the app -> Require Face ID. It can be locked, but not hidden.
- **One conversation:** Swipe left and tap Mute, or turn on Hide Alerts. The sender sees that you've silenced notifications.
- **Other devices:** Messages in iCloud and Text Message Forwarding can show your texts on an iPad or Mac.

Yes, but not with one switch. Apple's Messages app has no hidden folder for conversations, and because Messages came with your iPhone, it can't go in the locked Hidden folder either. What works is a few settings together: set message previews to **Never** or **When Unlocked**, turn on **Hide Alerts** for chatty conversations, and lock the Messages app with **Require Face ID**. Then check that your texts aren't also showing on an iPad or Mac. The limit is the same for all of it: your iPhone passcode opens everything.

We checked these steps against Apple's iOS 27 documentation in October 2026. Below: each setting, what it hides and what it doesn't, and a table of every place a message can still be seen.

## Can you hide text messages on iPhone?

You can hide them from view in most places, but you can't tuck one conversation away behind its own lock. Here's what each built-in option actually does.

| You want to... | Use | What it hides | What it doesn't |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop texts appearing on the Lock Screen | **Show Previews -> Never or When Unlocked** | The message text in notifications | That a message arrived |
| Stop one chat from buzzing | **Mute / Hide Alerts** | Notifications for that conversation | The conversation itself in your list |
| Stop someone opening Messages | **Require Face ID** | The whole app, plus its content in previews and search | The Messages icon |
| Keep texts out of Spotlight and suggestions | **Excluded Apps** or **Show App in Search** | Messages in search results and Siri suggestions | Anything inside the app |
| Keep texts off an iPad or Mac | **Messages in iCloud, Text Message Forwarding, iMessage sign-in** | Your messages on that device | The copies on your iPhone |
| Get rid of a conversation | **Delete** | The conversation, after 30 days in Recently Deleted | The other person's copy |

### Hide messages on iPhone in four steps

If you want the short version, these four steps cover what most people mean by "hiding" messages:

1. **Hide message previews** Go to Settings -> Notifications -> Messages, tap Show Previews and choose Never or When Unlocked.
2. **Silence a conversation** In Messages, swipe left on the conversation and tap Mute, or open it, tap the contact at the top and turn on Hide Alerts.
3. **Lock the Messages app** On the Home Screen, touch and hold Messages, tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode), then tap it again and authenticate.
4. **Check your other devices** Go to Settings -> Apps -> Messages -> Text Message Forwarding and turn off any iPad or Mac that shouldn't get your texts.

## How to hide message previews on your Lock Screen

Notification previews are the most common way a text gets seen. Someone glances at your phone on the table, and the message is right there.

1. Go to **Settings -> Notifications**.
2. Tap **Messages** (below Notification Style).
3. Tap **Show Previews** and choose **When Unlocked** or **Never**.

**When Unlocked** shows the text only after your iPhone is unlocked. **Never** shows that a message came in, without the text. To change previews for every app at once, tap **Show Previews** at the top of the Notifications screen instead. Apple notes that previews can include text from Messages and Mail, and that you can override the all-apps setting for individual apps.

Two related settings in the same place:

- **Alerts.** Under Alerts, choose whether Messages notifications appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center or as banners. Turning off the Lock Screen option keeps message notifications off it entirely.
- **Screen Sharing.** In **Settings -> Notifications -> Screen Sharing**, turn off **Allow Notifications** so texts don't pop up while you're mirroring or using SharePlay.

To stop all Messages notifications, turn off **Allow Notifications** in **Settings -> Notifications -> Messages**. You still receive messages; you just aren't told. Apple says senders get a note that you have notifications silenced.

## How to hide alerts from one conversation

To silence one person or group without blocking them:

1. Open **Messages**.
2. Swipe left on the conversation and tap the **Mute** button.

Or open the conversation, tap the contact or icon at the top, and turn on **Hide Alerts**. Either way, messages keep arriving, but you aren't notified. Turn it off the same way.

Know two things before you rely on it:

- **The sender can tell.** Apple says senders receive a note indicating that you have notifications silenced.
- **The conversation stays in your list.** Muting hides alerts, not the chat. Anyone who opens Messages sees it as usual.

To stop getting messages from someone at all, Apple's advice is to block that person or number, or leave the group conversation.

## How to lock the Messages app with Face ID

Messages can't be hidden, but it can be locked. Apple only lets you hide apps you downloaded from the App Store, so the **Hide and Require Face ID** option isn't available for built-in apps like Messages. Messages isn't on Apple's list of built-in apps that can't be locked, so this works:

1. Go to the Home Screen.
2. Touch and hold **Messages** until the quick actions menu opens.
3. Tap **Require Face ID** (or **Touch ID** or **Passcode**).
4. Tap **Require Face ID** again, then authenticate.

From then on, Messages asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode every time it opens, and relocks after you quit it. Apple also says information inside a locked app won't appear in other places, such as notification previews, search, Siri suggestions or CarPlay. So locking Messages also covers a lot of what the settings above do.

To undo it, touch and hold Messages, tap **Don't Require Face ID**, then authenticate.

> **Note:** Locking applies only to that iPhone. Apple says the locked status of an app doesn't sync with iCloud, so if your messages also appear on an iPad, Messages there stays unlocked unless you lock it too.

The lock opens with your iPhone passcode, and anyone whose face or fingerprint is enrolled can open it too. Our guide on [how to lock apps on iPhone](/blog/lock-apps-iphone) covers the details, and the [lock apps hub](/lock-apps) collects every app-lock guide in one place.

## How to keep messages out of Search and Siri suggestions

Spotlight can search the content of apps like Messages, and Siri suggestions can surface conversations elsewhere. You have three levels of control:

- **Exclude Messages entirely.** Go to **Settings -> Siri -> Excluded Apps**, tap **Add Apps** and choose Messages. Apple says excluded apps aren't available to Siri, Search or suggestions, which also means Siri can't use Messages for you.
- **Remove the app from Search.** Go to **Settings -> Search**, tap **Messages** and turn off **Show App in Search**.
- **Stop suggestions inside the app.** Go to **Settings -> Siri -> Suggestions**, tap **Messages** and turn off the options you don't want, such as **Show in App**.

If you've locked Messages, Apple already keeps its content out of search and Siri suggestions, so these matter most when you'd rather not lock the app.

## How to stop messages appearing on your iPad or Mac

This is the one people forget. Your texts can show up on other devices in three separate ways, and each one has its own switch.

| What sends them there | What it does | How to turn it off |
|---|---|---|
| **Messages in iCloud** | Keeps your whole message history in sync on every device where it's on | On the other device: Settings -> your name -> iCloud -> See All -> Messages in iCloud -> turn off **Use on this** device. On a Mac: Messages -> Settings -> iMessage -> deselect **Enable Messages in iCloud**. |
| **Text Message Forwarding** | Sends SMS, MMS and RCS texts from your iPhone to your other devices | On your iPhone: Settings -> Apps -> Messages -> **Text Message Forwarding** -> turn off the device |
| **iMessage on the same Apple Account** | Delivers iMessages to any device signed in with your number or Apple Account | On the iPad: Settings -> Apps -> Messages -> **Send & Receive** -> uncheck your number, or turn off iMessage. On a Mac: Messages -> Settings -> iMessage -> deselect your number or **Sign Out**. |

Apple's Personal Safety guide is clear that to limit Messages to one device, you have to sign out of Messages on the devices you don't want receiving messages *and* turn off Messages in iCloud. If the phone number belongs to an iPhone you can't access, Apple's fix is to change your Apple Account password, which removes all phone numbers from your iPad and Mac.

Two more things Apple points out:

- **Deleting syncs too.** With Messages in iCloud on, deleting a message or conversation on your iPhone deletes it from all your devices where it's on.
- **Sharing an Apple Account means sharing messages.** Apple says if you share your Apple Account with someone, you can't prevent them from seeing your conversations. It recommends Family Sharing instead.

## How to hide messages from unknown senders

If the problem is texts from people you don't know, Messages can filter them out of your main list:

1. In **Messages**, tap the **Filter** button in the conversation list.
2. Tap **Manage Filtering** and turn on **Screen Unknown Senders**.

Apple says their messages go into a separate folder and you aren't notified unless you choose to be, for example for verification codes. To review them, tap the **Filter** button, then **Unknown Senders**. You can also turn on **Text Message Filter** to sort SMS, MMS and RCS texts into Transactions and Promotions.

This only applies to senders who aren't in your contacts and haven't been marked as known. It won't hide a conversation with someone you already talk to.

## Pinned conversations and the conversation list

Pinned conversations sit at the top of Messages as large icons, so they're the first thing anyone sees when the app opens. If a conversation is pinned, unpin it: touch and hold it and tap **Unpin**, or drag it down into the list.

The list itself also gives things away. Each conversation shows its latest message under the name, and on iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Apple says message summaries can replace those previews. To turn summaries off, go to **Settings -> Apps -> Messages** and turn off **Summarize Messages**. The only built-in way to keep the list itself private is to lock the app.

## How to delete messages, and how Recently Deleted works

Deleting is the only option that actually removes a message from your iPhone. To delete a conversation, swipe left on it and tap the **Delete** button, or touch and hold it and tap **Delete**. To delete single messages, touch and hold a bubble, tap **More**, select the messages and tap **Delete**.

Deleted messages don't vanish straight away. Apple says they stay in **Recently Deleted** for up to 30 days. Apple's Personal Safety guide adds the flip side: if you think someone deleted messages on your device, they may still be there.

**To delete them for good:**

1. In **Messages**, tap the **Filter** button, then tap **Recently Deleted**.
2. Select the conversations, tap the **Delete** button, then tap **Delete**.

This can't be undone.

### How to recover deleted messages

1. In **Messages**, tap the **Filter** button, then tap **Recently Deleted**.
2. Select the conversations, tap **Recover**, then tap **Recover Messages**.

Apple notes that a message removed with Undo Send is permanently deleted, and audio messages that expire before being saved can't be recovered.

### Delete old messages automatically

In **Settings -> Apps -> Messages -> Keep Messages**, choose 30 days or 1 year instead of Forever. Conversations and attachments older than that are removed automatically. Deleting only ever affects your own devices: Apple says you can't delete messages for anyone else. To unsend a message from the other person's phone within 2 minutes, see our guide to [disappearing messages on iPhone](/blog/disappearing-messages-iphone).

## Where can a hidden message still be seen?

Every method above covers some places and misses others. Here's the full picture, based on Apple's documentation:

| Who or where | Can they still see your messages? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Someone glancing at your Lock Screen | **Not the text, if previews are set to Never or When Unlocked** | They may still see that a message arrived. |
| Someone you hand your unlocked iPhone to | **Yes, unless Messages is locked** | Muting and preview settings don't stop anyone opening the app. |
| Someone who knows your iPhone passcode | **Yes** | The passcode opens a locked Messages app. |
| Someone using your iPad or Mac | **Yes, if Messages in iCloud, forwarding or iMessage is on there** | Each sends your texts to that device, and the app lock doesn't sync. |
| Someone sharing your Apple Account | **Yes** | Apple says you can't stop them seeing your conversations. |
| Spotlight search and Siri suggestions | **Not if Messages is locked or excluded** | Apple keeps a locked or excluded app's content out of search and suggestions. |
| Recently Deleted | **Yes, for up to 30 days** | Deleted messages wait there unless you remove them for good. |
| Your iCloud Backup | **Yes, if Messages in iCloud is off** | Apple says messages are included in iCloud Backup when they don't sync through Messages in iCloud. |
| The other person in the conversation | **Yes** | Deleting or hiding only affects your own devices. |
| Your Photos library | **Screenshots, and possibly shared photos** | Screenshots save to Photos, and photos people send you can appear there through Shared with You. |

The last row catches people out. To stop photos from your chats appearing in your library, see [how to turn off shared photos on iPhone](/blog/turn-off-shared-photos-iphone). If you think someone has already been reading your messages, see [signs someone went through your phone](/blog/signs-someone-went-through-your-phone).

## When an app with its own chat lock is the answer

Apple's tools can't lock one conversation, and they can't use a code that's different from your iPhone passcode. Some messaging apps can. WhatsApp, for example, has **Chat Lock**: you long-press a chat to lock it, and it moves into a Locked Chats folder. WhatsApp says you can add a secret code that's different from the code you use to unlock your phone, and hide the Locked Chats folder so it only appears when you type that code in the search bar.

That only helps for conversations that happen in that app, and only if the other person uses it too. Look in the privacy or security settings of the messaging app you use to see what it offers.

## Photos and screenshots from your chats

Messages often aren't the sensitive part. The photo someone sent you is, or the screenshot you took of a conversation you need to keep. Those end up in your Photos library, where hiding the Messages app does nothing for them.

We make VaultForYou, so weigh this accordingly. It doesn't store messages; it's an iPhone vault for the photos, videos and documents you choose. A vault opens only with a pattern you draw, not your iPhone passcode, files are encrypted on your iPhone, and they live outside the Photos library, so they don't show up in Photos, search or widgets. After moving a photo in, delete the original from Photos and empty Recently Deleted. For sensitive images in general, see [the safest way to store private photos on iPhone](/blog/private-photos-iphone).

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I hide text messages on my iPhone?

Use a few settings together. In Settings -> Notifications -> Messages, set Show Previews to Never or When Unlocked. Mute conversations you don't want popping up. Then touch and hold the Messages app and tap Require Face ID, so it asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode every time it opens. Messages has no hidden folder for individual conversations.

### Can you hide text messages on iPhone?

Partly. You can hide message previews, silence a conversation, lock the whole Messages app, keep it out of Search and Siri suggestions, and delete conversations. You can't move a single conversation into a hidden or locked folder, and Messages can't be hidden from the Home Screen. Anyone who knows your iPhone passcode can still open Messages.

### Can you hide the Messages app on iPhone?

No. Apple only lets you hide apps you downloaded from the App Store, and Messages came with your iPhone. You can lock it, though: Messages isn't on Apple's list of built-in apps that can't be locked. Touch and hold the icon and tap Require Face ID. The icon stays on your Home Screen, but the app needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open.

### How do I hide message previews on my Lock Screen?

Go to Settings -> Notifications -> Messages, tap Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. When Unlocked shows the text only after you unlock your iPhone; Never shows only that a message arrived. To change it for every app at once, tap Show Previews at the top of the Notifications screen instead of choosing Messages.

### How do I hide messages from one person on iPhone?

You can silence them, not hide the conversation. Swipe left on it and tap Mute, or open it, tap the contact at the top and turn on Hide Alerts. Messages still arrive; you just aren't notified. Apple says the sender sees a note that you have notifications silenced. To stop messages from that person entirely, block them, or delete the conversation.

### How do I stop my messages showing up on my iPad or Mac?

Check three things. On your iPhone, go to Settings -> Apps -> Messages -> Text Message Forwarding and turn off the device. Turn off Messages in iCloud on that device. Then sign out of iMessage there, or uncheck your phone number in its Messages settings. Apple says limiting Messages to one device takes both signing out and turning off Messages in iCloud.

### Does muting a conversation on iPhone notify the other person?

Yes, in a way. Apple says that when you mute a conversation or turn on Hide Alerts, senders receive a note indicating that you have notifications silenced. They don't get a message saying you muted them personally. The same note appears if you turn off notifications for Messages altogether in Settings -> Notifications -> Messages.

### How do I recover deleted messages on iPhone?

In Messages, tap the Filter button in the conversation list, then tap Recently Deleted. Select the conversations, tap Recover, then tap Recover Messages. Deleted messages stay there for up to 30 days. Messages you removed with Undo Send are gone for good, and with Messages in iCloud on, recovering on your iPhone restores them on your other devices too.

### Can you lock individual conversations on iPhone?

Not in Apple's Messages app. Apple's lock works on the whole app, and its documentation doesn't describe a lock for single conversations. Some messaging apps do offer one: WhatsApp's chat lock moves a chat into a Locked Chats folder, and you can add a secret code that's different from your phone's passcode.

## Bottom line

To hide messages on iPhone, set **Show Previews** to **Never** or **When Unlocked**, mute conversations that pop up too often, and lock Messages with **Require Face ID**. Then check Text Message Forwarding, Messages in iCloud and iMessage on your iPad or Mac, because that's where texts most often leak. Messages itself can't be hidden, only locked.

Treat all of this as protection from glances and borrowers, not from someone who knows your passcode. For that, delete what you don't need to keep (and empty Recently Deleted), or use an app whose chat lock has its own code.
