# Do hidden photos transfer to a new iPhone?

> Hidden photos move with your Photos library, so they arrive on the new iPhone and stay wherever your Apple Account goes.

## Quick answer

Yes. Hidden photos are part of your Photos library, so they come with it. With iCloud Photos on, they download to the new iPhone from iCloud and stay hidden. Quick Start's direct transfer and an iCloud or computer backup carry them when iCloud Photos is off. Check the Hidden album, and its lock, once setup finishes.

- **Short answer:** Yes. Hiding is a display setting, so hidden photos move with your library.
- **With iCloud Photos:** They download from iCloud after setup and stay hidden on every device.
- **Lock on the new phone:** It uses the new iPhone's Face ID, Touch ID or passcode. Check Settings -> Apps -> Photos.
- **Old phone:** Erase it. Deleting hidden photos one by one while signed in deletes them from iCloud too.

Yes. Hidden photos are still part of your Photos library, so they move to a new iPhone with the rest of it, whichever way you set it up. With iCloud Photos on, they download from iCloud after setup and stay hidden, because Apple says photos hidden on one device are hidden on your other devices too. With iCloud Photos off, they travel inside Quick Start's direct transfer or an iCloud or computer backup. The catch is the same one that applies on your old phone: the Hidden album opens with the new iPhone's Face ID, Touch ID or passcode. Hiding keeps photos out of view, not off the new device.

We checked these steps against Apple's setup, backup and trade-in documentation in October 2026. If you're not sure where hidden photos live in the first place, start with [how to find hidden photos on iPhone](/blog/find-hidden-photos-iphone).

## Do hidden photos transfer? The answer by method

Every route Apple offers brings your Photos library, and hidden photos come with it. What changes is where they come from:

| How you set up the new iPhone | Do hidden photos transfer? | Where they come from |
|---|---|---|
| Any method, with iCloud Photos on | **Yes**, still hidden | iCloud Photos, downloading in the background after setup |
| Quick Start, transfer directly from your old iPhone | **Yes** | Your old iPhone, over a wireless or wired connection |
| Quick Start, download from iCloud (iCloud Photos off) | **Yes**, if your iCloud backup includes them | Your iCloud Backup |
| Restore from a Mac or PC backup (iCloud Photos off) | **Yes** | The computer backup, which is unencrypted unless you turned encryption on |
| Restore from an iPad backup onto an iPhone | **No**, unless you use iCloud Photos | Apple says photos don't transfer between device types this way |
| Set up as new, iCloud Photos off, no backup | **No** | Nothing to bring them from |

Apple doesn't describe a separate step for the Hidden album in any of these. It's part of the library, so it moves when the library moves. Check it when you're done.

## If you want private photos to travel without riding along in Photos: VaultForYou

A new iPhone is a good moment to take private photos out of the Photos library, where they otherwise follow your Apple Account to every device. We make VaultForYou, an iPhone vault that opens only with a pattern you draw. Files are encrypted on your iPhone with keys kept in the iOS Keychain, and they sit outside the Photos library, so they're not in iCloud Photos or your other devices. To move them to a new iPhone, turn on the optional encrypted iCloud backup (Premium), which encrypts each file before it goes to your iCloud. Then install the app on the new phone, sign in to iCloud and draw your pattern.

## How hidden photos move during setup

When you turn on the new iPhone near your old one, Quick Start walks you through Wi-Fi, Face ID or Touch ID, and then asks how you want to transfer your data:

1. **Download from iCloud.** Your apps and data download in the background, so you can use the new iPhone right away. If you use iCloud Photos, your library, Hidden album included, comes from there.
2. **Transfer directly from your old iPhone.** Data moves phone to phone, and you have to wait for it to finish on both devices before you can use either. You can also do this over a cable.

If you set up from a backup instead, Apple notes that photos keep downloading from iCloud after setup finishes, and that the time depends on how much you have. That's why a Hidden album can look empty or half full right after setup. Keep the new iPhone on Wi-Fi and power until it catches up.

## Does the Hidden album stay locked on the new iPhone?

It should, but check. The lock isn't attached to the photos; it's a setting on the device that uses that device's Face ID, Touch ID or passcode. On current iOS the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums are locked by default.

After setup:

1. Go to **Settings -> Apps -> Photos** and confirm **Use Face ID** (or **Use Touch ID**, or **Use Passcode**) is on.
2. Check **Show Hidden Album** is set the way you want.
3. Go to **Settings -> Face ID & Passcode** and make sure only your face is enrolled. Setup asks you to set up Face ID, so don't hand that step to someone else.

If you use Stolen Device Protection, Apple says it's restored with your device settings when you restore from iCloud Backup or transfer directly, though the new iPhone may take a while to learn your familiar locations. For how the Hidden album lock works and who can get past it, see [Hidden album password on iPhone](/blog/hidden-album-password-iphone).

## Who can see your hidden photos during and after the switch?

A phone switch puts your library on more devices, at least for a while. Here's who can reach your hidden photos:

| Who | Can they see your hidden photos? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Someone helping you set up who doesn't know your passcode | **No** | The Hidden album asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. |
| Someone helping you set up who knows your passcode | **Yes** | The passcode opens the Hidden album. |
| Anyone with your old iPhone, if you haven't erased it | **Yes**, if they can unlock it | The old library is still on the old phone. |
| The next owner of your old iPhone, after you erase it | **No** | Erase All Content and Settings removes your photos from the device. |
| Anyone signed in to your Apple Account on another device or iCloud.com | **Yes, with iCloud Photos on** | Switching iPhones doesn't change iCloud Photos access. |
| Anyone with your unencrypted computer backup | **Possibly** | Computer backups aren't encrypted by default. |

For the iCloud side of this, see [do hidden photos sync to iCloud](/blog/hidden-photos-icloud).

## Where hidden photos get lost (or left behind)

Most problems come from the old phone or the backup, not the transfer itself:

- **Deleting from the old phone while signed in.** Apple warns that when you're signed in to iCloud, deleting items manually removes them from iCloud and all your connected devices. Don't clean up the old phone photo by photo. Erase it instead.
- **Restoring from a different device type.** An iPad backup restored onto an iPhone doesn't bring photos unless you use iCloud Photos.
- **No backup and no iCloud Photos.** If neither is on and you set up the new phone as new, the photos only exist on the old phone.
- **An old backup.** If you turned off iCloud Backup at some point, Apple keeps existing backups for 180 days before deleting them. Make a fresh backup before you switch.
- **A missing album, not missing photos.** If Show Hidden Album is off on the new phone, the photos are there but out of sight.

Before you erase anything, check the new iPhone: open **Photos -> Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden**, tap **View Album**, unlock, and make sure what you expect is there.

## What to do with the old iPhone

Once your hidden photos are confirmed on the new phone, the old one still has a full copy of your library. Before you sell it, trade it in or give it to someone:

1. Make a backup, then confirm the new iPhone has everything.
2. On iOS 26 or later, go to **Settings -> [your name]**, tap **Sign Out**, and choose **Erase this iPhone**. On earlier versions, sign out, then go to **Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Erase All Content and Settings**.
3. Turn off Stolen Device Protection first if you use it; Apple says to do this before you sell, give away or trade in your iPhone.

Erasing removes your photos from the old device without deleting them from iCloud. Our [guide to wiping an iPhone before a trade-in](/blog/wipe-iphone-before-trade-in) has the full checklist.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do hidden photos transfer to a new iPhone?

Yes. Hidden photos are still in your Photos library, so they move with it however you set up the new iPhone: from iCloud Photos, with Quick Start, or from an iCloud or computer backup. With iCloud Photos on, Apple says photos hidden on one device are hidden on your other devices too, so they arrive in the Hidden album.

### Do hidden photos transfer with iCloud?

Yes. With iCloud Photos on, your whole library, hidden photos included, lives in iCloud. Sign in to the same Apple Account on the new iPhone and the photos download in the background after setup, still hidden. Large libraries take a while, so keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power until the download finishes.

### Do hidden photos transfer with Quick Start?

Yes. Quick Start lets you download your data from iCloud or transfer it directly from your old iPhone. Either way your Photos library comes along, and hidden photos are part of it. If you use iCloud Photos, the photos still come from iCloud. Check the Hidden album on the new phone before you erase the old one.

### Does the Hidden album stay locked on the new iPhone?

The Hidden album is locked by default on current iOS, and the lock uses the new iPhone's own Face ID, Touch ID or passcode. Settings can come across from a backup, so it's worth checking: go to Settings -> Apps -> Photos and make sure Use Face ID (or Use Touch ID, or Use Passcode) is on.

### Will someone helping me set up my new iPhone see my hidden photos?

Not unless they can unlock the Hidden album. It asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, so set up Face ID yourself and don't let anyone else enroll their face. If you tell a helper your passcode, they can open it. Hidden photos may also still be downloading during setup, so check the album later.

### Why are my hidden photos missing on my new iPhone?

First make sure the Hidden album is visible: Settings -> Apps -> Photos -> Show Hidden Album. If it's there but empty, your library may still be downloading from iCloud. Also check you're signed in to the same Apple Account, and that you didn't restore from another device type's backup, which doesn't bring photos unless you use iCloud Photos.

### Do photo vault apps transfer to a new iPhone?

It depends on the app's own backup, not on Photos. With VaultForYou, turn on the optional encrypted iCloud backup (Premium) before you switch. Then install the app on the new iPhone, sign in to iCloud and draw your pattern to restore. With backup off, vault files can't be restored, so export anything you need first.

## Bottom line

Hidden photos transfer to a new iPhone because they never left your Photos library. With iCloud Photos on they download from iCloud and stay hidden; without it, they travel through Quick Start or a backup. After setup, confirm the Hidden album is there and locked, then erase the old phone rather than deleting photos from it. If some photos shouldn't follow your Apple Account at all, this is a good time to move them out of Photos.
