# Do hidden photos sync to iCloud? What's stored, what's backed up and who can see it

> Hiding a photo changes where Photos shows it, not where it's stored, so it goes to iCloud like everything else in your library.

Published 2026-10-29 - Updated 2026-10-29 - By VaultForYou Editorial Team

## Quick answer

Yes. If iCloud Photos is on, hidden photos upload to iCloud like every other photo and stay hidden on your iPad, Mac and iCloud.com, where anyone signed in to your Apple Account can open the Hidden album. If iCloud Photos is off, they aren't in iCloud Photos, but your iCloud Backup may include them.

- **iCloud Photos on:** Hidden photos sync to iCloud and stay hidden on every device on your Apple Account.
- **iCloud Photos off:** They aren't in iCloud Photos, but iCloud Backup may include your library, hidden photos too.
- **On iCloud.com:** Photos -> Hidden -> Show Hidden Photos. No extra password beyond your Apple Account.
- **Can Apple see them?:** With standard data protection Apple holds the keys; Advanced Data Protection end-to-end encrypts Photos.

Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. Hidden photos upload to iCloud like every other photo in your library, the hidden status syncs with them, and they show up in the Hidden album on your iPad, your Mac and iCloud.com. Anyone who can sign in to your Apple Account, or use a device that's signed in to it, can open them there. If iCloud Photos is off, hidden photos aren't in iCloud Photos, but iCloud Backup may still include them. Hiding a photo changes where it's displayed; it doesn't keep it out of iCloud, and it doesn't add any encryption of its own.

We checked these answers against Apple's iCloud support pages and its iOS 27 documentation in October 2026. For where to find the album on your iPhone, see [how to find hidden photos](/blog/find-hidden-photos-iphone).

## Do hidden photos go to iCloud? It depends on one switch

Whether hidden photos end up in iCloud, and in which part of it, comes down to iCloud Photos. Here's how Apple's pages describe each case:

| Your setup | In iCloud Photos? | In iCloud Backup? | In a computer backup? |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Photos **on** | **Yes**, full resolution, still marked hidden | **No**, photos sync instead | **No**, data already in iCloud is left out |
| iCloud Photos **off**, iCloud Backup on | **No** | **May be**, with the rest of your library | Only if you also back up to a computer |
| iCloud Photos **off**, computer backups only | **No** | **No** | **Yes**, and it isn't encrypted unless you turn that on |

Apple's wording on backups is that, without iCloud Photos, iCloud Backup "may include photos and videos in your Photos or Camera Roll." Hidden photos are still in that library, so nothing about hiding takes them out.

## If iCloud visibility is the problem: VaultForYou

iCloud Photos has no "don't sync this one" switch, so photos you want out of iCloud have to leave the Photos library. We make VaultForYou, an iPhone vault that opens only with a pattern you draw. Photos you move in are encrypted on your iPhone, with keys kept in the iOS Keychain, and they live outside the Photos library, so they're not in iCloud Photos, on iCloud.com or on your other devices. Backup is your choice: the optional encrypted iCloud backup (Premium) encrypts each file before it goes to your iCloud. After importing, delete the originals and empty Recently Deleted.

## Where hidden photos show up in iCloud

With iCloud Photos on, hidden photos are hidden everywhere, which also means they're reachable everywhere:

- **iCloud.com.** Go to icloud.com/photos, select **Hidden** in the sidebar, then **Show Hidden Photos**. You can unhide from there too.
- **iPad.** In Photos, open the sidebar and tap **Utilities -> Hidden**, then unlock it.
- **Mac.** In Photos, choose **View -> Show Hidden Photo Album**, select Hidden and unlock with Touch ID or your login password. The album is off by default on Mac.

Apple's iCloud.com guide says you can hide a photo "if you want to store it in iCloud Photos but don't want it to appear in your library." That's the clearest statement of what the feature is: storage stays the same, display changes.

## Who can see your hidden photos on iCloud?

Here's who can reach the iCloud copy of your hidden photos, based on Apple's documentation:

| Who | Can they see your hidden photos? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Anyone who knows your Apple Account password and can sign in | **Yes** | iCloud.com's Hidden album opens after sign-in, with no separate password. |
| Someone using an iPad or Mac signed in to your Apple Account | **Yes, with iCloud Photos on there** | The Hidden album syncs and opens with that device's unlock. |
| Shared Library participants | **Yes, for photos in the Shared Library** | Hiding a shared photo moves it to the Hidden album for all participants, who can view or unhide it. |
| Family Sharing members with their own Apple Accounts | **No**, unless you share photos with them | Apple says each person uses their own Apple Account and, with shared iCloud+, photos stay theirs alone. |
| Apple, with standard data protection | **Technically possible** | Apple holds the encryption keys so it can help you recover data. |
| Apple, with Advanced Data Protection | **No, for photo content** | Photos is end-to-end encrypted; only your trusted devices hold the keys. |
| Anyone on iCloud.com, with Advanced Data Protection on | **Not by default** | Web access is turned off unless you turn it on and approve it from a trusted device. |

The first two rows are the ones that catch people out. A partner who knows your Apple Account password, or a family iPad that's still signed in to your account, sees the Hidden album the same way you do. For the family side, see [who can see photos in Family Sharing](/blog/family-sharing-photos) and [iCloud Shared Library privacy](/blog/icloud-shared-library-privacy).

## Can Apple see your hidden photos?

It depends on your iCloud protection level, not on whether a photo is hidden.

- **Standard data protection (the default).** Apple says your iCloud data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and the keys are kept in Apple's data centers so Apple can decrypt your data on your behalf, for example when you sign in on a new device or restore a backup.
- **Advanced Data Protection (opt-in).** Photos joins the categories that are end-to-end encrypted, so only your trusted devices can decrypt them. Turn it on in **Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud -> Advanced Data Protection**. You'll need a recovery contact or recovery key, because Apple can't help you recover the data.

One detail matters for hidden photos specifically. Even with Advanced Data Protection on, Apple keeps some Photos metadata under standard protection, including "whether an item has been marked as a favorite, hidden, or marked as deleted," plus when it was created and how many times it was viewed. The photo is protected; the fact that it's hidden isn't. Our guide to [whether Apple can see your photos](/blog/can-apple-see-your-photos) goes further.

## Are hidden photos included in your iPhone backup?

Only when iCloud Photos is off. Apple says iCloud Backup covers what isn't already synced to iCloud, so with iCloud Photos on, your photos aren't duplicated in the backup. Apple even advises keeping separate backup copies of your library for that reason.

With iCloud Photos off, an iCloud backup may include your library, hidden photos included. iCloud backups are always encrypted, but under standard data protection Apple holds the keys to them; Advanced Data Protection makes iCloud Backup end-to-end encrypted too.

Computer backups made with the Finder or the Apple Devices app are different: they skip anything already in iCloud Photos, and they **aren't encrypted by default**. If you back up your iPhone to a Mac or PC, turn on **Encrypt local backup**. More in [what's in an iPhone backup](/blog/what-is-in-an-iphone-backup).

## How do you back up pictures to iCloud?

There are two ways, and you only need one for your photos:

1. **iCloud Photos (sync).** Go to **Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud -> Photos** and turn on **Sync this iPhone**. Every photo and video, hidden ones included, uploads in full resolution and stays in sync across your devices.
2. **iCloud Backup.** Go to **Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud -> iCloud Backup** and turn on **Back Up This iPhone**. With iCloud Photos off, the backup may include your photo library.

To see what you're storing, check **Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud** for your storage use. To keep sync running but stop specific devices from getting your photos, see [how to stop iCloud Photos syncing](/blog/stop-icloud-photos-syncing).

## How to keep private photos out of iCloud

You have three real options, and they protect against different things:

| Option | What it does | What it doesn't do |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off iCloud Photos on your iPhone | Stops your iPhone uploading anything new | Doesn't remove photos already in iCloud; your whole library stops syncing |
| Turn on Advanced Data Protection | Makes Photos end-to-end encrypted, so Apple can't read them | Doesn't stop anyone signed in to your account or devices; the hidden flag stays visible to Apple |
| Move photos to a vault, then delete the originals | Takes those photos out of iCloud Photos entirely | Needs its own backup plan if you want a copy outside your iPhone |

If you go the vault route, order matters:

1. Move the photos into the vault and check they arrived.
2. Delete the originals from Photos. With iCloud Photos on, that deletes them from iCloud and your other devices.
3. Open **Collections -> Utilities -> Recently Deleted**, unlock, and delete them there too. Otherwise they stay for 30 days.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do hidden photos sync to iCloud?

Yes, when iCloud Photos is on. Hiding a photo only changes where Photos displays it, so the photo uploads and syncs like the rest of your library. Apple says photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too, and iCloud.com has its own Hidden album where you can view them after signing in.

### Are hidden photos saved to iCloud?

They are if you use iCloud Photos, in full resolution and in the same library as your other photos. If iCloud Photos is off, they aren't in iCloud Photos, but iCloud Backup may still save them, because Apple says a backup can include the photos and videos in your library when iCloud Photos isn't on.

### Does iCloud backup hidden photos?

It depends on iCloud Photos. When iCloud Photos is on, your photos sync to iCloud instead and aren't included in iCloud Backup. When it's off, Apple says iCloud Backup may include the photos and videos in your library. Hidden photos are still in your library, so they're treated like any other photo.

### Can anyone see my hidden photos on iCloud?

Anyone who can sign in to your Apple Account can. On iCloud.com, they select Hidden in the Photos sidebar and then Show Hidden Photos; there's no separate password. The same goes for an iPad or Mac signed in to your account with iCloud Photos on, and for Shared Library participants if you hide a shared photo.

### Can Apple see my photos?

With standard data protection, the default, your iCloud Photos are encrypted, but Apple keeps the keys so it can help you recover data. With Advanced Data Protection on, Photos is end-to-end encrypted and only your trusted devices hold the keys. Some metadata, including whether a photo is marked hidden, stays under standard protection either way.

### Can my family see my hidden photos on iCloud?

Not through Family Sharing alone. Apple says everyone in a family group uses their own Apple Account, and with a shared iCloud+ plan everyone's photos and files remain theirs. Family members see your photos only if you share them, for example through a Shared Library or Shared Album, or if their device is signed in to your Apple Account.

### How do I keep hidden photos from syncing to iCloud?

You can't exclude single photos from iCloud Photos; it syncs the whole library, hidden ones included. Your options are to turn off iCloud Photos on your iPhone, or to move the private photos out of the Photos library into a vault app, then delete the originals and empty Recently Deleted so they leave iCloud too.

## Bottom line

Hidden photos sync to iCloud whenever iCloud Photos is on, stay hidden on every device, and open on iCloud.com for anyone with your Apple Account password. When iCloud Photos is off, iCloud Backup may include them instead. Advanced Data Protection keeps Apple out of the photo content, but nothing in iCloud keeps out someone who can sign in as you. For photos that shouldn't be in iCloud at all, move them out of the Photos library.
