# Hidden folder on iPhone: can you make one, and where do hidden photos go?

> iOS doesn't let you create a hidden folder. Here's what it offers instead, where your hidden photos live, and what still shows through.

## Quick answer

No. iPhone has no built-in hidden folder you can create in the Files app. The closest thing is the Hidden album in Photos, which holds photos and videos and is locked by default. Anyone with your passcode can still open it. For a separate lock, use a vault app with its own code.

- **Hidden folder in Files?:** No. The Files app can't hide a folder or put a password on it.
- **Where hidden photos go:** Photos -> Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden.
- **How to unhide:** Open Hidden, tap View Album, unlock, press and hold the photo, tap Unhide.
- **A separate lock:** A vault app that opens only with a pattern you draw, not your passcode.

If you're looking for a hidden folder on your iPhone, here's the catch: there isn't one you can create. The Files app lets you make, rename, tag and compress folders, but it has no option to hide one or put a password on it.

What iOS does give you is a handful of look-alikes, mainly the Hidden album in Photos. This guide shows what each one does, where hidden photos go, how to unhide them, and what still shows through. Menu names match Apple's support pages, checked on October 29, 2026.

## Can you make a hidden folder on iPhone?

No, not as a feature you control. iOS has no "new hidden folder" command anywhere. What people call a hidden folder is usually one of these:

| Option | What it holds | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Hidden album in Photos | Photos and videos | Locked by default. Opens with your usual iPhone unlock |
| Show Hidden Album turned off | Same as above | Removes the album from view. You can switch it back on |
| Locked notes | Photos and text in a note | One note at a time. See our [folder lock guide](/blog/lock-folder-on-iphone) |
| A vault app | Photos, videos and documents (varies by app) | Its own lock, separate from your passcode |

Only the last option works like a secret folder for more than photos, and it's the only one with a lock that isn't your iPhone passcode.

## How to hide a photo on iPhone

In Photos, press and hold the photo or video, tap Hide, then confirm. Apple says hidden items move to the Hidden album, so they stop appearing in your Library, other albums and the Photos widget on your Home Screen.

For more detail, see our full guide on [how to hide photos on iPhone](/blog/hide-photos-on-iphone).

## Where do hidden photos go on iPhone?

They go to the Hidden album. To find it, open Photos, tap Collections, scroll down, and tap Hidden under Utilities. Tap View Album and unlock it to see what's inside.

If you can't see Hidden in the list, check Settings, then Apps, then Photos, and look for Show Hidden Album. Apple says it's on by default on iPhone. When it's off, hidden photos don't appear anywhere in the Photos app.

Files are different. Anything in the Files app, whether in a folder or loose, stays visible to anyone who opens Files. There's no Hidden album for documents.

## How to unhide photos on iPhone

Unhiding takes about a minute. Open the Hidden album and move the photo back to your Library.

1. **Open the Hidden album** In Photos, tap Collections, scroll down, and tap Hidden under Utilities.
2. **Unlock the album** Tap View Album, then unlock with Face ID or Touch ID.
3. **Unhide the photo** Press and hold the photo or video you want back, then tap Unhide.
4. **Check your Library** Open the Library tab in Photos and confirm the photo shows up again.

Unhide is not the same as delete. The photo goes back to your Library and other albums rather than being removed.

## What a "hidden" folder still reveals

Hiding keeps photos out of casual view. It doesn't make them private from everyone.

| Situation | Can it be seen? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Someone knows your iPhone passcode | Possibly | The Hidden album opens with your normal iPhone unlock |
| You use iCloud Photos | Hidden on other devices too | Apple says the hidden state syncs across your devices |
| Show Hidden Album is on | The album is easy to find | Hidden sits right under Utilities |
| A folder in the Files app | Yes | Files can't hide folders at all |

If the person you're worried about knows your passcode, the Hidden album won't stop them. Our guide to [locking photos on iPhone](/blog/lock-photos-on-iphone) compares the options that use a separate key.

## The safer alternative: a vault that opens by pattern

A vault app keeps files outside the Photos app and locks them with something other than your iPhone passcode. Here's how VaultForYou does it. We make it, so weigh our description accordingly.

- Photos, videos and documents live in a vault, separate from Photos
- A vault opens only with a pattern you draw (connect four or more dots, then draw it again to confirm)
- A different pattern opens a different vault. More vaults are a Premium feature
- The lock screen shows no vault names, counts or previews
- Files stay out of Photos, search and widgets
- Files are encrypted on your iPhone. The keys stay in the iOS Keychain, and VaultForYou never sees your pattern, so the company can't see your files
- You don't need an account

> **Keep them out of Photos entirely.** VaultForYou opens only with a pattern you draw. [Download on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/vaultforyou/id0000000000)

### How to move files in

1. Install VaultForYou (iOS 16 or later) and draw a pattern to create your vault.
2. Select the photos or documents you want to protect and move them in. The app shows how many were saved and flags duplicates.
3. Moving creates a copy, so delete the originals from Photos and then empty Recently Deleted.

### Optional decoy vault

You can set a duress pattern that opens an ordinary-looking decoy vault. Inside it, nothing points to your other vaults: no names, counts or activity. The duress pattern can also wipe your real vaults, but that is off by default and entirely your choice.

### What to keep in mind

- **A forgotten pattern is final.** That vault can't be opened by you or by VaultForYou. Export anything you can't afford to lose.
- **Backup is optional.** Encrypted iCloud backup is a Premium feature. With it off, a lost iPhone means lost files.
- **Pricing.** The basics are free. Premium is $29.99 a year or $4.99 a month, with no free trial. Final prices in your currency appear in the App Store before you buy.
- **Leaving is free.** Viewing, exporting and deleting your files stay free, even after you cancel Premium.

## Which option should you choose?

It comes down to who you're hiding things from.

| Your situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Hand a friend your phone without them scrolling your photos | Hidden album in Photos |
| Make the album less obvious in Photos | Turn off Show Hidden Album |
| Hide a few photos and some text quickly | A locked note |
| Protect photos, videos and documents from someone who knows your passcode | A vault app with its own pattern |

> **Want a secret folder that opens only with your pattern?.** VaultForYou encrypts photos, videos and documents on your iPhone. No account needed. [Download on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/vaultforyou/id0000000000)

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you make a hidden folder on iPhone?

Not in the Files app. iOS has no option to hide a folder or protect it with a password. The closest built-in feature is the Hidden album in Photos, which holds only photos and videos and is locked by default. For documents and other files you need another approach, such as a vault app.

### How do I unhide photos on iPhone?

Open Photos, tap Collections, then tap Hidden under Utilities. Tap View Album and unlock it with Face ID or Touch ID. Press and hold the photo or video, then tap Unhide. It returns to your Library and other albums. Until then it stays in the Hidden album.

### Why can't I find the Hidden album on my iPhone?

The Show Hidden Album setting may be off. Go to Settings, tap Apps, tap Photos, and turn on Show Hidden Album. Apple says the album is on and visible by default on iPhone. When it's off, your hidden photos won't appear anywhere in the Photos app until you switch it back on.

### Do hidden photos stay hidden on my other devices?

If you use iCloud Photos, Apple says photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too. That helps with privacy, but it also means a shared device signed in to your Apple Account follows the same settings. Check which devices use your account before you rely on it.

### Can someone with my passcode see my hidden photos?

Possibly. The Hidden album is locked by default, but it opens with the same ways you unlock the iPhone, such as Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. If a partner, family member or friend knows your passcode, a vault with its own separate lock is a safer choice.

### Can I hide documents and videos like a secret folder?

The Hidden album takes photos and videos only. For documents too, a vault app like VaultForYou stores photos, videos and documents outside the Photos app. It opens only with a pattern you draw, and a different pattern opens a different vault. You don't need an account to use it.

## Bottom line

iPhone has no hidden folder you can create. For photos and videos, the Hidden album in Photos is a quick option, and unhiding is just a few taps from Collections, Utilities, Hidden. But it opens with your normal iPhone unlock, so anyone with your passcode can get in.

If you need protection from people who know your passcode, or you want to hide documents too, use a vault with its own pattern. Whichever you choose, delete leftover originals and empty Recently Deleted so no unprotected copy remains.
