# Hidden album vs photo vault app: which one do you actually need?

> For many people the built-in Hidden album is enough. For others it protects almost nothing. The difference is who else can unlock your iPhone or use your Apple Account.

## Quick answer

Use the Hidden album if the only risk is someone glancing at your photo grid and nobody else knows your passcode or uses your Apple Account. Use a photo vault app if someone could unlock your iPhone, you share an Apple Account, or the photos shouldn't sync to iCloud Photos.

- **Hidden album lock:** Your iPhone's own lock: Face ID, Touch ID or passcode.
- **Vault app lock:** Its own code, separate from your passcode (in the better apps).
- **iCloud Photos:** Hidden photos sync. Files in a vault app stay outside the Photos library.
- **Trade-off:** A vault with its own code can't be reset if you forget it.

We make VaultForYou, a vault app, so weigh our view accordingly. This comparison is based on Apple's published documentation and on how photo vault apps are documented to work. We did not lab-test other vendors' apps, and where an app's behavior depends on the developer, we say what to check instead of guessing.

## What does each option do?

The **Hidden album** is part of the Photos app. When you hide a photo, it leaves your library, your other albums and the Photos widget, and moves to the Hidden album, which opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. It is free, already installed, and syncs with iCloud Photos.

A **photo vault app** keeps the files you choose in its own storage, outside the Photos library, behind its own lock. The details vary a lot between apps: whether files are encrypted on the device, whether the lock is separate from your iPhone passcode, and whether there is an account or cloud copy. Our guide to [what a vault app is](/blog/what-is-a-vault-app) explains those differences.

## Side-by-side comparison

| | Hidden album | Vault app with its own code and encryption |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, built in | Varies; check the App Store listing |
| What opens it | Face ID, Touch ID or iPhone passcode | A separate code or pattern (app-dependent) |
| Someone who knows your passcode | **Can open it** | Cannot, unless they know the vault code |
| Encryption added by the feature | None added by hiding | Files encrypted on the device (verify per app) |
| Syncs to iCloud Photos | **Yes**, with iCloud Photos on | No, files sit outside the Photos library |
| Visible on your iPad or Mac | **Yes**, on the same Apple Account | Not unless the app syncs or backs up |
| Included in the Photos widget and search | No | No |
| If you forget the lock | Your passcode still works | Often unrecoverable |
| Recovery after losing the phone | Via iCloud Photos | Only if the app has a backup you set up |

## Which one fits your situation?

| Your situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| You want photos out of your grid while showing someone your phone | Hidden album |
| A partner, parent or child knows your passcode | Vault app |
| A family iPad or Mac is signed in to your Apple Account | Vault app, or turn off sync for that device |
| You never want the photos in iCloud Photos | Vault app |
| The photos are only mildly private and you may forget a new code | Hidden album |
| You may be pressured to open your phone | Vault app with a decoy, such as [a decoy vault](/blog/decoy-vault-iphone) |

## When the Hidden album is the right answer

Choose it when the risk is a glance, not a determined person. Apple's Hidden album already keeps photos out of your library, albums and widget, and it costs nothing. If you are the only person who can unlock your iPhone and use your Apple Account, adding another app adds a second thing to manage and, if you forget its code, a second way to lose photos. Our [hide photos on iPhone](/blog/hide-photos-on-iphone) guide shows how it works and where it stops.

## When a vault app earns its place

Choose one when someone else shares your passcode or Apple Account, when you don't want the photos in iCloud at all, or when the files are sensitive on their own, such as ID scans. The extra lock only helps if you actually keep it separate: a vault that opens with your iPhone passcode adds almost nothing.

With VaultForYou specifically, a vault opens only with a pattern you draw, different patterns open different vaults, files are encrypted on your iPhone with keys in the iOS Keychain, no account is needed, and a forgotten pattern can't be recovered. iCloud backup is optional and is a Premium feature. Other apps make different trade-offs, so compare them in [the best photo vault apps for iPhone](/blog/best-photo-vault-apps-iphone).

## How to check any vault app yourself

Ask these before you import anything sensitive:

1. Does the listing or website say files are encrypted on the device?
2. Does the vault open with a code that is different from your iPhone passcode?
3. Who holds the keys, and where do backups go?
4. What happens if you forget the code?
5. Try it with harmless photos: import, lock, reopen, export.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the iPhone Hidden album secure?

It is private from casual browsing but not separately secured. Apple documents that the Hidden album opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, and hiding doesn't encrypt anything or add a password. Anyone who can unlock your iPhone, or who uses your Apple Account with iCloud Photos on, can open it.

### Do I need a photo vault app if I use the Hidden album?

Only if the Hidden album's limits matter to you: someone else knows your passcode, a family iPad or Mac shares your Apple Account, or the photos should stay out of iCloud Photos. If none of those apply, the built-in album is a reasonable, free choice.

### Can a vault app see my photos?

It depends on the app. Look for files encrypted on the device with keys that never leave it, and check where backups go. In VaultForYou, files are encrypted on your iPhone, keys stay in the iOS Keychain and the company can't see your files. Check every app against its own documentation.

### Do photos stay in my camera roll after I move them to a vault?

Yes. Moving a photo into a vault creates a copy, so the original stays in Photos until you delete it. Delete the original and then empty Recently Deleted, or the vault protects nothing.

### What happens if I forget my vault code?

With a vault that has its own code and no reset, the files can't be opened by you or the developer. That is the price of the extra protection. The Hidden album never has this problem because your iPhone passcode unlocks it.

## Bottom line

For most people with a private iPhone, the Hidden album is enough. It only fails when someone else can unlock your phone or use your Apple Account, or when you don't want the photos in iCloud. In those cases, move them into a vault with its own lock, delete the originals, and empty Recently Deleted. Pick whichever protection matches the person you are actually worried about.
