# Does a HEIC photo contain location metadata? What the file records

> HEIC is a modern photo container, and it keeps EXIF data the same way JPEG does. If the camera had location access, the coordinates travel with the file.

## Quick answer

Yes. HEIC files can hold EXIF metadata, including GPS latitude, longitude and altitude, camera details and the date taken. Apple says location is embedded in photos when Location Services is on for Camera. Anyone who receives the original HEIC can read those fields, so remove them before sharing.

- **Where it lives:** In an Exif item inside the HEIC container, not in the picture itself.
- **What it can include:** GPS, altitude, date, camera and lens, owner and serial fields.
- **When it's saved:** When Location Services is on for Camera, per Apple.
- **Check it:** Open the file in the free image metadata viewer. Nothing is uploaded.

A HEIC photo doesn't hide anything the JPEG would reveal. The format changes how pictures are compressed and packaged, not whether a camera writes EXIF to the file.

## What we tested, and what we didn't

On 2026-10-30 we created a HEIC file with known values (GPS 51.507222, -0.1275, altitude 35 m, a date taken, a camera make and model, an artist name and a body serial number) using libheif through pillow-heif 1.8.1, then opened it in this site's [image metadata viewer](/tools/image-metadata-viewer).

The viewer found all of them: 14 fields, including the GPS block, the date taken, the owner name and the serial number. That confirms the mechanism: **EXIF, including GPS, sits inside a HEIC file and is readable by anyone who has the file.**

This was a generated sample, not a file from an iPhone camera, so it shows what the format can hold, not what a particular iPhone writes. For that, Apple says that with Location Services on for Camera, location is embedded in photos and videos. Check your own photos with the viewer.

## What fields can a HEIC carry?

| Group | Examples | Privacy weight |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Latitude, longitude, altitude, GPS time, direction | **High**: can show a home, school or workplace |
| Date and time | Date taken, time zone offset | Medium: shows when you were there |
| Camera | Make, model, lens, exposure, ISO | Low, but identifies the device |
| Owner | Artist, camera owner name | **High** when filled in |
| Identifiers | Body serial number, unique image ID | **High**: can link photos to one device |
| Maker note | Camera-specific blob | Medium: not decoded by most tools |

## Who can read it?

Anyone who gets the original file: an email attachment, a cloud link to the original, an AirDrop with the location option on. A screenshot or a version re-encoded by an app may have lost it, but you shouldn't count on that. Our [EXIF guide](/blog/exif-data-iphone) lists who can see what.

## How to check and remove it

1. Open the photo in the [image metadata viewer](/tools/image-metadata-viewer) to see if GPS is present.
2. Before sending, turn off **Location** under Share -> Options on iPhone.
3. To make a clean copy, use the [metadata remover](/tools/remove-photo-metadata). It needs a browser that can open HEIC (Safari can); otherwise it will tell you.
4. Stop new photos saving location: Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Location Services -> Camera -> Never. See [remove location from photos on iPhone](/blog/remove-location-from-photos-iphone).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does HEIC keep GPS data?

It can. HEIC stores EXIF in the file, and EXIF has a GPS block. If Location Services was on for Camera when you took the photo, the coordinates are in the file. If it was off, or the location was removed, the block is absent.

### Is HEIC metadata different from JPEG metadata?

The fields are the same EXIF fields. What differs is the container: JPEG stores EXIF in a marker segment, while HEIC stores it as an item inside an ISO media file. A reader has to understand both, which is why some older tools miss HEIC metadata.

### Can I see HEIC metadata without installing anything?

Yes. The free image metadata viewer on this site reads HEIC in your browser and shows GPS, date and camera fields. The file is not uploaded. On iPhone you can also swipe up on a photo in Photos to see where and when it was taken.

### How do I remove location from a HEIC photo?

On iPhone, use Share -> Options -> turn off Location, or More -> Adjust Info -> Adjust Location -> No Location. On a computer, the free metadata remover re-draws the picture without metadata and re-checks the copy before you download it.

## Bottom line

HEIC records location the same way JPEG does, and the coordinates stay in the file until you remove them. Check the photo you're about to send, strip what you don't want to share, and stop the Camera app from saving location if you don't need it.
