# How to find hidden photos on iPhone, and what to do when the album is missing

> Your hidden photos are one locked album away, and so is anyone else who can unlock your iPhone.

## Quick answer

To find hidden photos on iPhone, open Photos, tap Collections, scroll down to Utilities and tap Hidden. Tap View Album and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. On iOS 18, swipe up in Photos to reach Utilities; on iOS 17 and earlier, tap Albums. If Hidden is missing, turn on Show Hidden Album in Settings.

- **Where is it?:** Photos -> Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden, then tap View Album.
- **How does it unlock?:** With Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode.
- **Album missing?:** Turn on Show Hidden Album in Settings -> Apps -> Photos.
- **Other devices:** With iCloud Photos on, the same Hidden album is on your iPad, Mac and iCloud.com.

Open **Photos -> Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden**, tap **View Album** and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. That's where every photo and video you've hidden lives, on any iPhone running a current version of iOS. On iOS 18 you swipe up in Photos to reach Utilities, and on iOS 17 and earlier it's under the Albums tab. If the album isn't there at all, it has been switched off in Settings, and nothing is lost. Keep in mind what you just did to get in: the Hidden album opens with your phone's own unlock. It hides photos from view; it doesn't give them a lock of their own.

We checked these steps against Apple's iOS 27 documentation and its iOS 18 and iOS 17 user guides in October 2026. If you want to know how to hide photos in the first place, start with our [guide to hiding photos on iPhone](/blog/hide-photos-on-iphone).

## How to find hidden photos on iPhone

On current iOS, the Hidden album sits at the bottom of the Collections view in Photos:

1. Open the **Photos** app.
2. Tap **Collections**.
3. Scroll down to **Utilities** and tap **Hidden**.
4. Tap **View Album**, then unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

The album shows every hidden photo and video at once, and you can view them there without unhiding anything.

To put a photo back into your library, touch and hold it and tap **Unhide**. With iCloud Photos on, that change reaches your other devices too, so think before you unhide something on a phone that shares an account with a family iPad.

## If you want photos that can't be found this way: VaultForYou

Everything above works for anyone who can unlock your iPhone. If that's the problem, the photos need to leave the Photos library. We make VaultForYou, an iPhone vault that opens only with a pattern you draw, not your passcode. Files are encrypted on your iPhone, the keys stay in the iOS Keychain, and we can't see them. Because the vault sits outside the Photos library, its photos don't show up in Photos, search, widgets or iCloud Photos, and the lock screen shows no vault names or counts. No account is needed. After importing, delete the originals from Photos and empty Recently Deleted.

## Where the Hidden album is in each iOS version

Apple has moved the album twice in recent years, which is why so many people can't find it after an update. Here's where to look, based on Apple's own user guides:

| Device or version | Where to find hidden photos | How it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone on iOS 26 or later | Photos -> **Collections** -> Utilities -> Hidden -> View Album | Face ID, Touch ID or passcode |
| iPhone on iOS 18 | Photos -> **swipe up** -> Hidden (below Utilities) -> View Album | Face ID, Touch ID or passcode |
| iPhone on iOS 17 or earlier | Photos -> **Albums** -> Hidden (below Utilities) | Face ID, Touch ID or passcode (locked by default from iOS 16) |
| iPad | Photos -> sidebar -> Utilities -> Hidden | Face ID, Touch ID or passcode |
| Mac | Photos -> **View -> Show Hidden Photo Album**, then Hidden in the sidebar | Touch ID or login password |
| iCloud.com | Photos -> **Hidden** in the sidebar -> Show Hidden Photos | Your Apple Account sign-in |

The Mac is the odd one out: the Hidden album is off by default there, so it won't appear until you turn it on from the View menu.

## Why can't I find the Hidden album?

If Hidden isn't under Utilities, work through these in order.

**Show Hidden Album is off.** In iOS 14 and later you can remove the album from view. On current iOS, go to **Settings -> Apps -> Photos** and turn on **Show Hidden Album**. On iOS 18, Apple's guide puts this switch in the Photos app itself: tap your account button in the top-right corner and turn on **Hidden Album**. On iOS 17 and earlier, it's in **Settings -> Photos**. Turning it off never deletes anything.

**The photo was deleted, not hidden.** Check **Collections -> Utilities -> Recently Deleted**, where deleted items stay for 30 days. Apple also notes that some items can turn up in a **Recovered** album instead. Our [Recently Deleted guide](/blog/recently-deleted-iphone) covers getting them back.

**It was hidden by someone else in a Shared Library.** If a participant in your iCloud Shared Photo Library hides a shared photo, it moves to the Hidden album for everyone. It's in your Hidden album, not your library.

**You're signed in to a different Apple Account.** Hidden photos belong to the library of the account that hid them. A new or borrowed Apple Account starts with an empty Hidden album.

**You're looking for apps, not photos.** Hidden apps go to a **Hidden** folder at the bottom of App Library, which also asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. That's a separate feature, explained in our guide to [hiding apps on iPhone](/blog/hide-apps-on-iphone).

## What finding the Hidden album does and doesn't tell you

Hidden photos don't move anywhere special. Apple says hiding moves them to the Hidden album so they don't appear anywhere else in Photos: not in your library, your other albums or the Photos widget. They're still in the same library, they still use storage, and with iCloud Photos on they still sync.

That's why the album is so easy to reach once you know where it is. It isn't encrypted separately and it doesn't have a password of its own. The lock you passed to open it is your iPhone's lock, and Apple lets you turn even that off under **Use Face ID**, **Use Touch ID** or **Use Passcode** in Settings -> Apps -> Photos. We explain the lock in detail in [Hidden album password on iPhone](/blog/hidden-album-password-iphone).

## Who else can find your hidden photos?

The same steps work for other people. This is who can reach the Hidden album, based on how Apple documents it:

| Who | Can they find and open your hidden photos? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Someone scrolling your library or albums | **No** | Hidden items don't appear in the library, other albums or the widget. |
| Someone who knows your iPhone passcode | **Yes** | The passcode unlocks the Hidden album. |
| Someone with an enrolled face or fingerprint | **Yes** | Face ID or Touch ID unlocks it. |
| Anyone holding your unlocked phone, if the Photos lock is off | **Yes** | Turning off Use Face ID removes the check. |
| Someone using your iPad or Mac on the same Apple Account | **Yes, with iCloud Photos on** | The Hidden album syncs and opens with that device's unlock. |
| Anyone signed in to your Apple Account on iCloud.com | **Yes, with iCloud Photos on** | iCloud.com has a Hidden album and a Show Hidden Photos button. |
| Shared Library participants | **Yes, for shared photos** | A hidden shared photo moves to every participant's Hidden album. |
| Someone, after you turn off Show Hidden Album | **Yes**, if they can unlock your iPhone | The switch only removes the album from view; anyone can turn it back on. |

The iPad, Mac and iCloud.com rows depend on iCloud Photos, which syncs hidden photos like any others.

## Can you tell if someone opened your Hidden album?

Not from the album itself. Apple doesn't describe any log, alert or "last opened" record for the Hidden album, so there's nothing in Photos to check. If you suspect someone has been through your phone, look at the wider picture instead: who knows your passcode, whose faces or fingerprints are enrolled under **Settings -> Face ID & Passcode**, and which devices are signed in to your Apple Account. Our guide to [signs someone went through your phone](/blog/signs-someone-went-through-your-phone) walks through those checks.

## When the Hidden album is enough, and when it isn't

The Hidden album is enough when you want photos out of the way: a gift you're planning, a screenshot you don't want popping up while you show someone vacation pictures, a phone you hand to a child.

It isn't enough when:

- **Someone knows your passcode** or has a face or fingerprint enrolled.
- **Your Apple Account is on a shared iPad or Mac**, where the same Hidden album syncs.
- **The photos shouldn't be in iCloud at all.** Hiding doesn't stop iCloud Photos.
- **The photos are sensitive in themselves**, like ID scans or intimate pictures.

In those cases, move the photos to a vault with its own lock, delete the originals, and empty Recently Deleted. Our comparison of [the best photo vault apps for iPhone](/blog/best-photo-vault-apps-iphone) lays out the options; we make one of them, so weigh our pick accordingly.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I find my hidden photos on iPhone?

Open the Photos app, tap Collections, scroll down to Utilities and tap Hidden. Tap View Album, then unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Your hidden photos and videos are all there. If you don't see Hidden under Utilities, the album has been switched off in Settings -> Apps -> Photos -> Show Hidden Album.

### Where is the hidden album on iPhone?

On current iOS versions it's in the Photos app under Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden. On iOS 18, Photos is a single screen, so swipe up to reach Utilities. On iOS 17 and earlier, tap the Albums tab and scroll down to Utilities. The album is locked by default and asks you to unlock before it shows anything.

### Why can't I see the Hidden album on my iPhone?

Most often, Show Hidden Album is turned off. On current iOS, go to Settings -> Apps -> Photos and turn it on. Turning it off doesn't delete anything; it only removes the album from view. If the album is there but a photo isn't, check Recently Deleted and make sure you're signed in to the Apple Account that holds your library.

### What is the hidden folder on iPhone?

People usually mean one of two things. The Hidden album in Photos holds photos and videos you've hidden. The Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library holds apps you've hidden, and it needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open. Neither is a folder you can create in the Files app.

### Does every iPhone have a hidden folder?

Every iPhone on a current iOS version has a Hidden album in Photos. It's visible by default and stays empty until you hide something. Apple says that from iOS 16 the album is also locked by default. You can switch the album off so it doesn't appear in Photos, but you can't remove the feature.

### How do I show hidden photos on iPhone again?

Open Photos -> Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden, tap View Album and unlock. Touch and hold the photo or video, then tap Unhide. It goes back to your library and albums. With iCloud Photos on, it's unhidden on your other devices too, so anyone looking at your iPad or Mac will see it.

### Can someone else find my hidden photos?

Yes, if they can unlock your iPhone. The Hidden album opens with the same Face ID, Touch ID or passcode as your phone, so anyone who knows your passcode or has an enrolled face or fingerprint can open it. With iCloud Photos on, anyone who can use your iPad, Mac or Apple Account on iCloud.com can too.

## Bottom line

Your hidden photos are in **Photos -> Collections -> Utilities -> Hidden**, one unlock away. If the album is missing, turn on **Show Hidden Album**; if a photo is missing, check Recently Deleted and your Apple Account. Just remember that anyone who can unlock your iPhone, or use your Apple Account, can follow the same steps.
