# How to send disappearing messages on iPhone (iMessage can't)

> Disappearing messages tidy up your chat history on both phones, but every app that offers them says the same thing: the other person can still keep a copy.

## Quick answer

Apple's Messages app has no disappearing-messages timer, so on iPhone you need another app. In Signal, open the chat settings and tap Disappearing messages. In WhatsApp, tap the contact's name, then Disappearing messages. In Instagram, swipe up in a chat to turn on vanish mode. None of them can stop someone photographing the screen.

- **iMessage:** No timer. You get Undo Send (2 minutes), Edit (15 minutes) and Keep Messages for your own copy.
- **Signal:** Chat settings -> Disappearing messages. Received messages start counting down once read.
- **WhatsApp:** 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. View once media can't be screenshotted.
- **Instagram:** Swipe up in a chat for vanish mode. You're notified if Instagram detects a screenshot.

It depends on the app, because Apple's Messages app doesn't have disappearing messages. To send them on iPhone, use Signal (chat settings -> **Disappearing messages**), WhatsApp (tap the contact's name -> **Disappearing messages**) or Instagram (swipe up in a chat for **vanish mode**). Each one deletes messages from the chat on a timer or when you leave, on both phones. iMessage only lets you unsend within 2 minutes and auto-delete your own old messages. The limit applies everywhere: a disappearing message removes the chat copy. It doesn't stop the other person from keeping one.

We checked these steps against Apple, Signal, WhatsApp and Instagram help pages in October 2026. App menus change often, so labels may differ slightly.

## Does iMessage have disappearing messages?

No. Apple's iPhone User Guide doesn't describe any timer that deletes iMessages from both phones. Here's what Messages does offer, and why none of it is quite the same:

- **Undo Send (2 minutes).** Touch and hold a message you just sent, then tap **Undo Send**. Apple says unsending removes it from the recipient's device, but a note that you unsent a message appears in both conversations. It works only over iMessage, not SMS, MMS or RCS, and someone on an older OS may still see the original.
- **Edit (15 minutes).** You can edit a sent iMessage up to five times. It's marked **Edited**, and both of you can tap that to see earlier versions.
- **Keep Messages.** In **Settings -> Apps -> Messages -> Keep Messages**, choose 30 days or 1 year instead of Forever, and your conversations and attachments older than that are deleted automatically. Apple is clear that this only affects your own devices: you can't delete messages for anyone else.
- **Audio messages.** By default, a recording is removed from the conversation on your iPhone 2 minutes after you send it or listen to it. But recipients can play it any time after receiving it and can tap **Keep**, so it doesn't disappear on your terms.

If you want a message to vanish from the other person's phone on a schedule, you need a different app.

## Disappearing messages on iPhone, app by app

| | Signal | WhatsApp | Instagram |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name of the feature | Disappearing messages | Disappearing messages (plus view once) | Vanish mode |
| How to turn it on | Chat settings -> Disappearing messages | Tap the contact's name -> Disappearing messages | Swipe up in a chat |
| When messages go | After the timer you set | 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days after sending | When someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off |
| Default for all new chats | Yes | Yes | Not offered on its help page |
| Who can turn it on or off | Anyone in the chat; in groups, admins can restrict it | Either person; in groups, admins can restrict it | Swipe up in the chat; it ends when someone leaves or turns it off |
| What the help page says about screenshots | Screen Security blocks them on your own device only | View once media can't be screenshotted | You're notified if Instagram detects one |

## How to send disappearing messages with Signal

Signal's timer is the most flexible of the three.

1. Open the chat, then open its chat settings.
2. Tap **Disappearing messages**.
3. Pick a time, or set a custom one (Signal's help page says custom times go up to 4 weeks).
4. Tap **Set**. A timer icon appears in the chat header, and an alert in the chat shows the new time.

To make it the default, go to **Settings -> Privacy -> Default timer for new chats**. To turn it off, return to Disappearing messages and choose **Off**.

How the timer works: for messages you send, it starts once the message is sent. For messages you receive, it starts once you've read it. When it runs out, Signal deletes the message from the device. The setting applies to new messages only and syncs to your linked devices.

Signal is unusually frank about what this is for. It describes disappearing messages as a way to keep your history tidy, not as protection against someone who wants to keep a record, since they can always photograph the screen.

For a single photo or video, Signal also has **view once**. After choosing the photo or video, tap the view-once icon, then send. The recipient can open it once, then it's removed from their conversation history.

## How to send disappearing messages on WhatsApp

1. Open the chat and tap the contact's name or group subject.
2. Tap **Disappearing messages**. If prompted, tap **Continue**.
3. Choose **24 hours**, **7 days** or **90 days**, then confirm.

To make it the default for new chats, tap **Settings -> Privacy -> Default message timer**. You can apply it to existing chats in the same step. To turn it off for one chat, go back to Disappearing messages and tap **Off**.

Some WhatsApp details worth knowing:

- **Anyone in the chat can keep a message** before it disappears, so it stays for everyone. If someone keeps a message you sent, you're notified, and you can unkeep it.
- **Quoted replies can linger.** If someone replies to a disappearing message, the quoted text might stay visible after the timer.
- **Forwarding breaks the timer.** A message forwarded into a chat without disappearing messages won't disappear there.
- **Media doesn't save to Photos.** With disappearing messages on, media sent in the chat isn't saved to your photo library.

For photos, videos and voice messages that should be seen only once, use **view once** instead. WhatsApp says the recipient can't screenshot view once media, can't forward or save it, and must open it within 14 days.

## How to use vanish mode on Instagram

1. In the Instagram app, tap **Messages**.
2. Open a chat.
3. Swipe up to turn on vanish mode. Swipe up again to turn it off.

Messages, photos and videos sent in vanish mode disappear when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off, and they can't be copied, saved or forwarded. It only works in a chat with another Instagram account, some professional accounts can't receive it, and Instagram says it may be unavailable in Japan and in Europe. In certain locations, Instagram also documents a separate **disappearing messages** setting with a timer, turned on the same way.

## Can you screenshot disappearing messages?

Here's exactly what each service's help page says:

- **Signal:** Turning on **Hide Screen in App Switcher** (Settings -> Privacy) covers Signal in the app switcher and, Signal says, prevents screenshots of Signal on your own device only. It doesn't stop someone else from taking a screenshot on theirs.
- **WhatsApp:** The recipient can't take a screenshot of view once media. Its disappearing-messages page doesn't say screenshots are blocked in regular disappearing chats. WhatsApp also warns that people can photograph view once media with another device, and that screen recording can capture the audio of view once voice messages.
- **Instagram:** People can take a screenshot or screen recording in vanish mode. You'll be notified if Instagram detects it.
- **iMessage:** There's no disappearing feature, so an iMessage stays in the conversation until someone deletes it.

Every service adds the same warning: a second phone pointed at the screen beats any setting. Send disappearing messages only to people you trust.

## Who can still see a disappearing message?

| Who or what | Can they still see it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The other person, before the timer ends | **Yes** | That's the point of sending it. |
| The other person, after the timer ends | **Only if they kept a copy** | A screenshot, a photo of the screen, or a kept WhatsApp message. |
| Someone glancing at your Lock Screen | **Possibly** | Notification previews can show message text. WhatsApp notes a preview may linger until the app is opened. |
| Your linked devices | **Yes, until it disappears** | Signal syncs the timer to linked devices. |
| A WhatsApp backup made before it disappeared | **Yes** | WhatsApp says the backup includes it until it's restored. |
| A forwarded or quoted copy | **Possibly** | Forwarded WhatsApp messages and quoted replies can outlast the timer. |
| Anyone who opens the chat after it's gone | **No** | The message is deleted from the chat. |

To stop message previews on your Lock Screen, go to **Settings -> Notifications -> Show Previews** and choose **When Unlocked** or **Never**. You can also set this per app, and our list of [iPhone privacy settings worth changing](/blog/iphone-privacy-settings) covers the rest.

## When disappearing messages are enough

They work well for keeping a chat history short: plans, codes for a door, a conversation you simply don't need to keep. They limit what's left on a phone that gets lost, borrowed or looked through later. For more on that, see [signs someone went through your phone](/blog/signs-someone-went-through-your-phone).

## When you need more than disappearing messages

Disappearing messages don't help with what's already been saved, and the most common copy is a screenshot. On iPhone, Apple says screenshots are automatically saved to your photo library, so a screenshot of a chat ends up in Photos and, with iCloud Photos on, on your other devices.

If you take a screenshot you genuinely need to keep, such as proof of harassment or a confirmation, you may not want it sitting in your camera roll. We make VaultForYou, so weigh our pick accordingly. VaultForYou doesn't send messages; it's an iPhone vault for the photos, videos and documents you choose. A vault opens only with a pattern you draw, files are encrypted on your iPhone, and they live outside the Photos library, so they don't show up in Photos, search or widgets. After moving a screenshot in, delete it from Photos and empty Recently Deleted. For sensitive images, see [the safest way to store private photos on iPhone](/blog/private-photos-iphone).

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you do disappearing messages on iPhone?

Use an app that has them, because Apple's Messages app doesn't. In Signal, open a chat, go to chat settings, tap Disappearing messages and pick a time. In WhatsApp, open a chat, tap the contact's name, tap Disappearing messages and choose 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. On Instagram, open a chat and swipe up to turn on vanish mode.

### Does iMessage have disappearing messages?

No. Apple's iPhone User Guide doesn't describe a disappearing-messages timer for Messages. What Apple offers is Undo Send within 2 minutes, editing within 15 minutes, and Keep Messages, which automatically deletes your own copies after 30 days or a year. None of these remove a message from the other person's phone on a timer.

### Can you screenshot disappearing messages?

Usually, yes. Signal says its Screen Security setting blocks screenshots only on your own device, not the other person's. Instagram says people can screenshot vanish-mode chats but you'll be notified if it detects one. WhatsApp says view once photos and videos can't be screenshotted. Every one of these services warns that someone can still photograph the screen with another device.

### Does Instagram notify you when someone screenshots vanish mode?

Instagram says you'll receive a notification if it detects that someone took a screenshot or screen recording of a vanish-mode message. Note the wording: if it detects. It also warns that someone can photograph the screen with another camera, which no app can detect. Use vanish mode only with people you trust.

### What is vanish mode on iPhone?

Vanish mode is an Instagram feature, not an iPhone setting. In the Instagram app, open a chat and swipe up to turn it on; swipe up again to turn it off. Messages, photos and videos sent in vanish mode disappear when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off, and they can't be copied, saved or forwarded.

### Can I turn on disappearing messages for every chat?

In Signal and WhatsApp, yes, for new chats. In Signal, go to Settings -> Privacy -> Default timer for new chats. In WhatsApp, tap Settings, then Privacy, then Default message timer. Both apply to new chats; WhatsApp also lets you apply the timer to existing chats you pick. Messages sent before you change the setting don't disappear.

### Do disappearing messages show up in backups?

They can. WhatsApp says that if someone makes a backup before a message disappears, the message is included in that backup, and it's deleted when they restore. Apple doesn't offer disappearing messages, so there's no timer to expire in iMessage. Disappearing messages limit what stays in the chat, not what a backup already captured.

### Can you unsend an iMessage?

Yes, within 2 minutes. Touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send. It's removed from the recipient's device, but a note saying you unsent a message appears for both of you. It only works over iMessage: SMS, MMS and RCS messages can't be unsent, and someone on an older OS may still see the original.

## Bottom line

iMessage has no disappearing messages: you can unsend within 2 minutes and auto-delete your own copies, nothing more. For messages that vanish from both phones, use Signal's timer, WhatsApp's disappearing messages or view once, or Instagram's vanish mode. Read each one as a tidy-up tool, not a guarantee, because every service says the other person can still screenshot or photograph the screen.
