# Can Apple see your photos, including hidden ones?

> Apple says it doesn't look at the photos on your iPhone, but unless you turn on Advanced Data Protection, it holds the keys to the copies in iCloud, hidden ones included.

Published 2026-10-29 - Updated 2026-10-29 - By VaultForYou Editorial Team

## Quick answer

It depends where the photo is. On your iPhone, Photos analyzes your library on the device, and Apple says it doesn't access your photos. In iCloud Photos with standard data protection, Apple holds the encryption keys and can decrypt them. With Advanced Data Protection, Photos is end-to-end encrypted. Hidden photos sync to iCloud like any other.

- **On your iPhone:** Analysis like faces and scenes runs on the device. Apple says it doesn't access your photos.
- **iCloud Photos, default:** Encrypted, but Apple holds the keys, so it can decrypt them.
- **Advanced Data Protection:** Photos becomes end-to-end encrypted. Apple says it can't decrypt them.
- **Hidden photos:** Sync to iCloud like others. The hidden flag stays under standard protection.

It depends on where the photo is. On your iPhone, Photos does its face, scene and quality analysis on the device, and Apple says it does not access your photos or videos. In iCloud Photos with standard data protection, the default, your photos are encrypted but Apple holds the keys, so Apple can decrypt them. Turn on Advanced Data Protection and Photos becomes end-to-end encrypted: only your devices hold the keys. Hidden photos follow exactly the same rules. Hiding a photo changes where it shows up in Photos; it doesn't keep it out of iCloud.

We checked this against Apple's own privacy, iCloud security and support pages in October 2026, and we only report what those pages say.

## Can Apple see your photos? It depends where they are

| Where the photo is | Can Apple access it? | What Apple says |
|---|---|---|
| On your iPhone, in Photos | **No** | Photos analysis runs on the device; Apple says it doesn't access your photos or use them for research and development. |
| In iCloud Photos, standard data protection | **Apple can decrypt it** | Photos is encrypted in transit and on the server, with keys stored by Apple. |
| In iCloud Photos, Advanced Data Protection on | **No** | Photos is end-to-end encrypted; keys stay on your trusted devices. |
| In iCloud Backup (iCloud Photos off) | **Apple can decrypt it** by default | iCloud Backup keys are in Apple data centers unless Advanced Data Protection is on. |
| In a Shared Album | **Apple can decrypt it** | Shared Albums don't support Advanced Data Protection. |
| A photo you report to Apple | **Yes, you send it** | Reporting nudity in iMessage or a FaceTime video call through Sensitive Content Warning sends the content to Apple for review. |

The short version: Apple's privacy promise for photos on the device is strong and explicit. In the cloud, what Apple can access depends on who holds the keys, and by default that's Apple.

## If you'd rather nobody else holds the key: VaultForYou

If some photos shouldn't sit in iCloud Photos under Apple-held keys, or behind your iPhone passcode, keep them out of the Photos library.

VaultForYou stores the photos, videos and documents you choose outside the Photos library, so they don't appear in Photos, search, widgets or iCloud Photos. Files are encrypted on your iPhone, the keys stay in the iOS Keychain, and a vault opens only with a pattern you draw. We never see your pattern and can't see your files. The iCloud backup is optional (Premium) and encrypts each file before it goes to your iCloud. After importing, delete the originals and empty Recently Deleted.

> **Photos only you can open.** Encrypted on your iPhone, outside the Photos library. No account needed. [Download on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/vaultforyou/id0000000000)

## What Apple says about photos on your iPhone

Apple's Photos privacy page is direct: Photos is designed to protect your privacy, "Apple does not access your photos or videos, and does not use them for research and development."

The smart features rely on on-device analysis instead:

- **On-device machine learning** handles scene classification, people and pets identification, photo quality analysis and audio classification. That's what powers Memories, Featured Photos, Sharing Suggestions and the People & Pets album.
- **Faces are recognized on the device.** If you name a person in People & Pets, that name and face appear in Photos on all your iCloud-enabled devices.
- **Enhanced Visual Search** lets you search for landmarks. Your device matches places against an index Apple keeps on its servers, and Apple says the techniques it uses prevent it from learning about the information in your photos. You can turn it off in **Settings -> Apps -> Photos**.
- **Sensitive Content Warning** blurs photos and videos that may contain nudity, or gore and violence, before you view them. Apple says the analysis happens on your device, so Apple doesn't receive an indication that sensitive content was detected and doesn't get access to the photos.

The one case where a photo goes to Apple on purpose: if you use Sensitive Content Warning to report nudity in an iMessage or FaceTime video call, the content is sent to Apple for review.

## Can Apple see your iCloud Photos?

With standard data protection, Apple can decrypt them. Your iCloud data is encrypted in transit and stored encrypted, and the keys from your devices are secured in Apple data centers so Apple can decrypt your data on your behalf, for example when you sign in on a new device or recover a forgotten password.

With Advanced Data Protection, Photos is end-to-end encrypted. Apple says no one else can access end-to-end encrypted data, not even Apple. Some photo metadata still uses Apple-held keys, including each photo's checksum, whether it's a favorite, **hidden** or deleted, when it was created, imported and modified, and how many times it's been viewed.

Apple's US Legal Process Guidelines spell out the consequence. For data Apple can decrypt, iCloud content, which may include stored photos and iOS device backups, may be provided in response to a search warrant. For accounts with Advanced Data Protection, the same document says Apple cannot decrypt certain iCloud content, including Photos, iCloud Drive, Backup, Notes and Safari Bookmarks. ## Who can see your photos?

Apple is only one of the parties people worry about. Here's the wider picture:

| Who | Can they see your photos? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Apple, photos on your iPhone | **No**, per Apple | On-device analysis; Apple says it doesn't access your photos. |
| Apple, iCloud Photos by default | **Can decrypt** | Standard data protection keeps the keys in Apple data centers. |
| Apple, iCloud Photos with Advanced Data Protection | **No** | End-to-end encrypted; only metadata like the hidden flag uses Apple-held keys. |
| Anyone who knows your iPhone passcode | **Yes**, including the Hidden album | The Hidden album unlocks with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. |
| Anyone signed in to your Apple Account | **Yes**, with iCloud Photos on | Your library, hidden photos included, syncs to their device or iCloud.com. |
| Apps with full photo access | **Yes**, including hidden photos | Apple says Allow Full Access covers hidden photos even if the album is locked. |
| Shared Album viewers | **Yes**, for what you add | Shared Albums use standard data protection. |
| Shared Library participants | **Yes**, for shared photos | Hiding a shared photo hides it for everyone, who can still view or unhide it. |

For most people, the realistic risk isn't Apple. It's a passcode someone knows, a shared Apple Account or an app with full access. Check app access in **Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Photos**, and see our guide to [iPhone photo access permissions](/blog/iphone-photo-access-permission).

## Do hidden photos sync to iCloud?

Yes. If you use iCloud Photos, the photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too, which means they're in iCloud like the rest of your library. On iCloud.com, they're in the **Hidden** album in the sidebar.

Hiding doesn't encrypt anything separately. Apple describes it as moving photos to the Hidden album so they don't appear in the Library, other albums or the Photos widget. And with Advanced Data Protection on, "whether an item has been marked as hidden" is one of the metadata fields Apple keeps under standard protection. Our guide to [hidden photos and iCloud](/blog/hidden-photos-icloud) covers the sync side in depth.

## Are hidden photos backed up to iCloud?

Not in the iCloud Backup itself if you use iCloud Photos: your photos already sync to iCloud, so they aren't included in your daily backup. If iCloud Photos is off, Apple says iCloud Backup may include the photos and videos in your library, and hidden photos are still in your library.

So the only way hidden photos stay out of iCloud entirely is to turn off both iCloud Photos and Photos in iCloud Backup, or to move them out of the Photos library. For what else your backup holds, see [what is in an iPhone backup](/blog/what-is-in-an-iphone-backup).

## How to make sure Apple can't decrypt your iCloud photos

Advanced Data Protection is the switch. You'll need two-factor authentication, a passcode on your devices and at least one recovery contact or recovery key.

1. **Update every device on your account** Advanced Data Protection needs iOS 16.2 or later on iPhone, iPadOS 16.2 on iPad and macOS 13.1 on Mac, and supported software on any other device signed in to your Apple Account.
2. **Open iCloud settings** Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud.
3. **Turn on Advanced Data Protection** Scroll down, tap Advanced Data Protection, then tap Turn on Advanced Data Protection.
4. **Set up a recovery contact or recovery key** Follow the onscreen steps. With Advanced Data Protection on, Apple can't recover your photos for you if you lose access to your account.
5. **Check what's still shared** Shared Albums and "anyone with the link" shares aren't end-to-end encrypted. Review them in Photos and remove anything that shouldn't stay there.

Two side effects to know: iCloud.com loses access to your data by default (you can approve temporary access from a trusted device), and if you lose access to your account and your recovery methods, Apple can't recover your photos. To stop Enhanced Visual Search as well, turn it off in **Settings -> Apps -> Photos**.

## When Apple's protections are enough, and when they aren't

**They're enough** if your concern is Apple itself. Photos on your iPhone are analyzed on the device, and with Advanced Data Protection on, your iCloud photos are end-to-end encrypted.

**They aren't enough** if your concern is people:

- Someone who knows your passcode can open Photos and the Hidden album.
- A family iPad or Mac on your Apple Account shows your whole library, hidden photos included.
- A Shared Library or Shared Album shares photos regardless of encryption.
- You want a photo out of iCloud while the rest of your library keeps syncing.

For those, the photo needs to leave the Photos library and sit behind a lock that isn't your iPhone passcode. See [how to hide photos on iPhone](/blog/hide-photos-on-iphone) for what the Hidden album does and doesn't cover.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Apple see my photos?

Not on your iPhone, according to Apple: Photos analyzes your library on the device, and Apple says it does not access your photos or videos or use them for research and development. In iCloud Photos, it depends on your setting. With standard data protection, Apple holds the encryption keys; with Advanced Data Protection, photos are end-to-end encrypted and Apple can't decrypt them.

### Do hidden photos sync to iCloud?

Yes. With iCloud Photos on, hidden photos upload and sync like every other photo, and they stay hidden on your other devices. They're also in the Hidden album on iCloud.com. Hiding changes where a photo appears in the Photos app; it doesn't keep the photo out of iCloud or add any extra encryption.

### Are hidden photos backed up to iCloud?

With iCloud Photos on, they're stored in iCloud Photos rather than in your iCloud Backup, like the rest of your library. With iCloud Photos off, Apple says iCloud Backup may include the photos and videos in your library, and hidden photos are still part of that library. Either way, they end up in iCloud unless you turn both off.

### Can Apple see my hidden photos in iCloud?

Hidden photos get the same protection as the rest of your iCloud Photos. With standard data protection, Apple holds the keys. With Advanced Data Protection, the photos are end-to-end encrypted, but Apple keeps some metadata under standard protection, including whether an item is marked as hidden, when it was created, and how many times it has been viewed.

### Does Apple scan my photos?

Apple says Photos uses on-device machine learning for scene classification, people and pets identification, photo quality and audio classification, which power Memories and the People & Pets album. Sensitive Content Warning also analyzes images on the device, and Apple says it isn't told when content is detected. Enhanced Visual Search matches landmarks privately and can be turned off.

### Can Apple give my iCloud photos to law enforcement?

Apple's US law enforcement guidelines say iCloud content, including stored photos and device backups, may be provided in response to a search warrant for data Apple can decrypt. For accounts with Advanced Data Protection, the same guidelines say Apple cannot decrypt certain content, including Photos, iCloud Drive and Backup.

### Can apps see my hidden photos?

Yes, if you give them full access. Apple's Photos privacy page says choosing Allow Full Access grants a third-party app access to your photos and videos, including hidden photos, even if the Hidden album is locked. Choose Limit Access instead, and review apps in Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Photos.

## Bottom line

Apple says it doesn't access the photos on your iPhone; analysis happens on the device. In iCloud, it comes down to keys: with standard data protection Apple holds them and can decrypt your photos, and with Advanced Data Protection only your devices can. Hidden photos sync and back up like any other photo, and the "hidden" label itself isn't end-to-end encrypted.

If some photos shouldn't be in iCloud Photos or behind your passcode at all, move them into an encrypted vault and delete the originals.
