# How to brighten a dark photo on iPhone, and keep the original safe

> A dim photo is often hiding more detail than it shows. Here is how to lift the shadows on an iPhone, what brightening cannot fix, and how a vault keeps your original untouched.

## Quick answer

To brighten a dark photo on iPhone, open it in Photos, tap Edit, adjust Exposure and Shadows under Light, then tap Done. Brightening reveals detail the camera recorded but cannot restore clipped white or crushed black areas. Keep the original in a VaultForYou vault while you work, so Photos never holds the only copy.

- **Where to start:** Photos -> Edit -> Light: Exposure and Shadows.
- **What it cannot do:** Recreate detail the camera never captured.
- **Keep the original:** Move it into a vault before you edit.
- **Before you share:** Remove location from the edited copy.

A dark photo often holds more than it shows. The sky may be grey where it should be blue, or a face in a doorway may be almost black, and the detail is still in the file. Brightening lifts those values so you can see what the camera recorded.

This guide walks through brightening on iPhone, shows where it stops working, and explains how to keep the original untouched while you work, so you never lose the only good copy of a photo.

## Brighten a photo with the Light controls

1. **Open the photo in Photos** and tap **Edit**.
2. **Tap the Light controls.** Adjust **Exposure** to lift the whole image, and **Shadows** to open the darkest areas without moving the bright parts much.
3. **Check the result against the original.** Tap and hold the image to compare, or revert if the edit goes too far.
4. **Tap Done** to save. Photos keeps the edit, and you can change or revert it later.

Make small changes first. Large lifts make grain and colour noise more visible, and a bright sky or window can turn flat and grey.

## What brightening can and cannot fix

Brightening stretches the tones already in the file. It can reveal a face in a shadow or a sign behind a dark window. It cannot restore detail from areas that are completely white or completely black, because the camera never recorded that detail.

Blur and noise are also hard limits. Lifting a blurry photo makes it brighter and still blurry, and lifting a noisy one makes the noise easier to see.

## Keep the original in a vault

An edit saved in Photos changes the photo in your library. If the edit goes wrong, or you change your mind later, you want the untouched file somewhere it cannot be overwritten by accident.

Move the original into a VaultForYou vault before you edit:

- **Work on a copy.** Add the photo to the vault, then copy it back into Photos to brighten it. The vault keeps the original file.
- **Keep it out of the library.** Files in a vault stay outside the Photos library, so they do not appear in Photos, search or widgets while you edit.
- **Stay in control of the file.** The vault opens only with a pattern you draw, and you can export the original at any time for free.

Once the brightened copy looks right and the original is safe in the vault, delete the leftover original from Photos and empty Recently Deleted.

## Check location before you share

Brightening does not make a photo private. The edited copy keeps the metadata in the original file, which can include the place where the photo was taken and the time. A photo of a dim street at night can still show a precise location.

Before you send or post the brightened image, check its details and remove location if you do not want it shared. Our guide on [removing location from photos on iPhone](/blog/remove-location-from-photos-iphone) covers the share-sheet switch and the Adjust Location option. To share the photo privately, send it as an encrypted vault link you can revoke, instead of attaching the file.

## Bottom line

Brightening works best on a photo that is dim but still has detail. Keep the original in a vault, make small adjustments with Exposure and Shadows, and check the location before you share the result.

## Brighten a dark photo FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I brighten a dark photo on iPhone?

Open the photo in Photos, tap Edit, then use the Light controls. Raise Exposure for the whole image and Shadows for the darkest areas. Adjust until the detail you want is visible, then tap Done. Edits are saved to that photo, so duplicate it first if you want to keep the original.

### Can brightening restore detail from a black area?

Only if the file still holds tonal differences in those areas. Brightening stretches what the camera recorded. It cannot recreate detail that was never captured, or texture lost to deep shadow noise.

### Will brightening make my photo look worse?

It can. Lifting shadows too far adds noise and washes out contrast. Make small changes, compare the result with the original, and stop before the image looks flat.

### Does the edited photo keep its location?

Usually yes. Editing a photo does not by itself remove the location, time or device details stored in the file. Check the details and remove location before you send or post the image.

### How do I keep the original while I edit?

Move a copy of the photo into a VaultForYou vault, then edit the copy in Photos. The vault keeps its own file, outside the Photos library, so the original is safe whatever you change. Moving a photo creates a copy, so delete the original from Photos and empty Recently Deleted once it is safe.

### Can I get my photo back out of the vault?

Yes. Viewing, exporting and deleting your files are always free, including after you cancel Premium. Export the original at any time.
