## Mail privacy settings

### Choose which mailboxes appear

Go to **Mail -> tap the Mailboxes button (or Show Sidebar button) until you see Mailboxes -> Edit -> select or deselect mailbox checkboxes**. You can choose which mailboxes to view, and create, rename, or delete mailboxes (some can't be changed).

### Keep Mail out of Search and Siri

Go to **Settings -> Apps -> Mail -> Search / Siri**. Search: 'Allow content from Mail to appear in Search.' Siri: allow Siri to make suggestions based on how you use Mail.

### Delete emails

Go to **Mail -> while viewing a message, tap the Delete button (deleted mail can be recovered from Mailboxes -> Trash)**. Settings -> Apps -> Mail -> Mail Accounts -> [account] (iCloud: Mailbox Behaviors; others: Account Settings -> Advanced) -> Remove sets how long deleted messages stay in Trash. iCloud doesn't keep deleted messages longer than 30 days.

### Mail Privacy Protection

Go to **Settings -> Apps -> Mail -> Privacy Protection -> Protect Mail Activity**. Hides your IP address from senders and prevents them from seeing whether you've opened their email.

### Notification previews

Go to **Settings -> Apps -> Mail -> Notifications (Allow Notifications; Customize Notifications -> [account]); or Settings -> Notifications -> Mail -> Show Previews**. Previews can include text from Mail. Set Show Previews to When Unlocked or Never to keep email text off the Lock Screen. You can also mute a thread: open a message -> More button -> Mute.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you lock Mail on iPhone?

Yes. Touch and hold Mail, tap Require Face ID and confirm. It then needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open. Mail has no separate lock of its own.

### Can you hide Mail on iPhone?

Not in the Hidden folder, because Mail comes with iPhone. You can remove it from the Home Screen so it only appears in App Library and search.

### Does Mail have its own passcode?

No. Mail relies on iOS for locking. Use Require Face ID, which accepts Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode. For a separate code, Screen Time with its own passcode is an option.

### Do Mail settings sync to my iPad?

The iOS lock and hidden status don't sync with iCloud; set them on each device. Mail has an iPad app, so repeat the steps there.
